Our Zoology 1 started out today with a good read aloud and narration on it's biblical origin (Genesis 1:20-23). its definition, and a review on classification and binomial nomenclature. In an earlier study of Botany, we discussed how plants are classified and scientifically named. This is such a good time for us to glance back. The mnemonic phrase was again a hit with my kids.
In the next couple of months, we again look forward to another exciting topic, a family favorite actually, that will surely bring more memories to us and will surely enhance our learning. We are going to study the flying creatures God so magnificently designed on the fifth day. A kick off activity with straws and water demonstrated how air pressure works on wings of airborne animals like birds. It was such a great way to start, a smooth take off to once again anticipate lots of wonderful time exploring and learning God's creation. The glider activity had become a time to play outside for them.
Fun experiment on air pressure...
In the previous years, we have studied Astronomy and Botany using this series by Jeannie Fulbright and we have always enjoyed all the lessons and activities. Living in an Asian tropical country is a challenge, we had learned to tweak some parts of it when we tackled Botany and perhaps we will do the same for Zoology. Most of the concepts are applicable but we made an extra effort in putting it in our context.
Here is the book. It is CM friendly and works well too with other approaches.
