We finished our schoolwork early today. After lunch break, we brought two boxes of books to a church in Dehiwela which sponsors and manages the Maranatha Children's Home in Batticoloa, east of Sri Lanka. Batticoloa is a coastal town on the opposite side of the island facing the Indian Sea, a good 10-hours away from Colombo so what we did was delivered the books to an elder of a church in Dehiwela, just a 10-minute tuktuk ride from our place. It is not easy to travel to such a far place these days beside the fact that the area is very near to the war zone where foreigners are advised not to wander.
In December 2004, the tsunami destroyed many coastal villages in Batticoloa including this home. The children in the home survived the tragedy but they were left with nothing but the clothes on their backs. They have picked up pieces of their lives after that and the home was reconstructed. These books will hopefully bring a smile to their young faces. The book donation activity is part of the Children of the Sea Book Project which we have initiated in 2007 as our children's community project. Books were gathered from members of the Bookcrossing.com and from our shelves for distribution to children's homes and orphanages in Sri Lanka.

Look what I have found on our veranda one sunny afternoon, corn kernels under the magnifying glass. Maybe, trying to see if they can have pop corn?
So much for fun free time! he he..
Did it pop? Actually, nope. So they just decided to pop corn on the oven top =)
