Yesterday, a lovely Sri lankan family came by and brought wonderful Sri Lankan goodies. This is the second time Dharma, his wife and 3 year old daughter filled our table with treats their aunt prepared and some of their garden harvest of bananas. Their generosity has provided us so many sweet things my children enjoy a lot like aasmi and mun kavun. We consider ourselves so fortunate to know a wonderful family like theirs.

Aasmi (or asmee) is made from rice flour. deep fried with treacle poured to make loops on it.

Mon Kavun (or Moong Kavun) is made from green gram (munggo for Filipinos) - a type of pulse - which is then ground to a paste and shaped like small long kayaks before frying.
Other favorites are halapa (sweet coconut fudge wrapped thinly in halapa leaves), wattalapan (a rich egg custard made with palm sugar, coconut milk and cardamom) and another made of flour, deep fried like pretzels altough thinner with treacle inside (which name escapes me for now).
Sigh! Although I know sugary sweets are not good for health, yet these are just too good not to miss.
I came across a website selling Sri Lanka sweets locally. Yes, they deliver! I haven't tried them yet but you can check them out here.

We had dinner with friends to celebrate the birthday of Sherri, one of my DH's colleagues and a friend. It was hosted by a beautiful family, the Djisselbloems. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Sherri-Ann! Thanks, Julie and Hans.
