A Peculiar Notion

The Proper Way to End a School Day

Puppy training has been hard work, and the day I took this picture, both Boomer and Madison were "pooped" after school (pun intended!).  Honestly, she gets this from her mother (my beatiful daughter in the pic that is...), as that's exactly what I love to do after the school day is through.  Naptime has to be my favorite subject!  One of the many reasons we love, love, LOVE homeschooling!

Boomer has been quite the challenge when it comes to house breaking.  Sunday Quinn was trying to get him to go outside and he wee'd all through the house until he hit the back door.  I don't think I've ever seen Quinn quite so, well,...ticked.  It's a good thing he's cute, or he'd have been a goner!  He keeps us laughing too...he was howling in his sleep the other morning.  I haven't heard him do that awake!  What a cool sound they can make...but I ran upstairs as quickly as possible so my morning quiet time wasn't completely derailed by the kids waking up too early.  :0)

Anyone else have issues training a beagle???  We'd love some feedback.  He is sleeping through the night now (finally!) that we've made him stay in his kennel, so that's a big plus.  Seriously though, if you've had (or have!) a beagle we'd love the input.

We don't have purebred beagles, but we have a beagle mixed with alot of things and a basset beagle mix.

About 2 years ago now we went through the puppy training with the basset/beagle mix - Jaxson. Here are my thoughts on it - hope it helps some.
The crates are the best. I know it's hard but they shouldn't spend A LOT of free time out of it.

As soon as you take them out - CARRY THEM (while you still can) outside and repeat the same command ( ours was 'go potty') EVERY TIME. Don't let them in until they go.

Again, they are little and have no control over their bladders, so don't let them out a lot , unless they have already gone to the bathroom and or he's outside.

That part is so hard, but it really helps. We used a small crate so we could have him in the different rooms with us. We would give him a small treat when he would go in his crate, so he LIKED it a lot. :-)

The constant repeating of the same command really helps, to this day I can tell Jaxson to 'go potty' and he pretty much goes on command. LOL.

As for the howling. That is the best part of these dogs. Jaxson howls at ambulances and police sirens. He has also howled in his sleep to. It's so funny.

Try playing a harmonica. They LOVE to howl with harmonica's ( maybe when he's a little older)

Hope that helps some.

Have fun.
