Nov. 17, 2006 - Is It Cheating
Today I had Alexa at the kitchen table working on her math. There was a page that had some addition and some subtraction problems all mixed up. I told her to work on it and I would be right back. When I came back she tells me that she is all finished. I go over to the table to check the problems and they are all right but there is a little something funny about it. I was sure there was some subtraction. I began to look closely. It seemed as though all the problems had mysteriously changed to addition. After a close look I could figure out which were addition and which were subtraction. She had VERY carefully changed all the problems to addition with a pen and done a very of job of it. It was not so easy to figure out what was what. When I told her I knew what she had done she began to giggle. I told her she could not do that anymore and let her know that she had to pratice both even though she may enjoy one more that the other. I ask her if she though what she had done was cheating to which she replied "no Ma'am Momma that's being smart".
~All I could do not to laugh~

Oct. 29, 2006 - Breaking the news to my dad!
I know I did not mention it in my first blog but I was putting off telling my father that we had decided to home school. I know how he feels about the idea and knew it was not going to go over very well. He stopped by Friday to bring the girls some chewing gum as he does so very often. While he was here he ask Alexa a question about school and she told him she did not go to school anymore. I'm sure he thought she was just pulling his leg. He told her we could not have her be a 1st grade drop out and she responded with "I'm doing home school now". At this point my dad looks at me and ask what she is talking about. I told him that we had decided to home school and attempted to explain our decision. He tells me that he thinks it is a terrible decision and that the girls will miss out on to much and that I should rethink this home schooling idea. He tells me that it is obvious that Alexa is going to be an athlete and I should not take that away from her. I told him that I had already thought of that and assured him we would continue to participate in rec ball. He does not feel that will be enough for her and that one day she is going to want to go to middle and high school to be able to be a part of the athletic program. At some level I guess I worry about her wanting that in the years to come just as my father does. Although, I'm sure I'll have my answers before we have to cross that bridge I would love some suggestions that maybe would ease my dad's mind on the subject.

Oct. 26, 2006 - Getting Started

As a new member of the blogging world I guess first I could introduce myself and my family. My name is Mande. My husband John and I have two wonderful little girls. Alexa Leigh is six and Jonna Rae (like Donna with a J) is three. We live in a small town in Georgia surrounded by crops and it is my understand that the cows are coming home very shortly and will be our neighbors. This we have my farming father to thank. Though I would not trade this place in the country for anything I believe the cows will make for some smelly neighbors.
My husband and I started talking a little about home schooling a year or so ago. It was not long after I went to work at our local high school that we realized we did not want our children to have to face the issues the most young ones this day in time have to face. We did not talk very seriously of home schooling as it was not the "normal" thing to do.
Recently my husband has taken a new job that in the future will call for months away from home. We knew then that we did not want our children to grow up with Daddy away from home for months on end. We started talking of home schooling very seriously at this point and with a lot of insight from a great friend who also happens to be a home schooling Mom we knew this was what we should be doing. I was very nervous about getting started and continued to put it off for a couple of week. It seems as though it was only days after we had made the decision to home school that Alexa began to have trouble at school....bad grades and trouble getting along with the other students. Part of the problem I do believe was a personality conflict with the teacher and then of course some of the children like to act ugly. Alexa would not tell the teacher because there will be no "tattle tails" in her class.
This past Monday morning we were on our way to take Alexa to school with the plans of talking to her teacher when a light bulb came on in our little heads. Why should we go to this school and ask strangers about the problems our daughter is having and then leave her there knowing we want to home school? Soooo....Instead we went in and withdrew her.
On Tuesday morning we started our new home schooling adventure! We are truly new to this so any little tips would be great.
Today being only our third day and Alexa is already having a load of fun and doing great. Everything she was having trouble with at school she is doing at home with no problems at all! I know home schooling is what we are meant to be doing.
