Nov. 17, 2006 - Is It Cheating
Today I had Alexa at the kitchen table working on her math. There was a page that had some addition and some subtraction problems all mixed up. I told her to work on it and I would be right back. When I came back she tells me that she is all finished. I go over to the table to check the problems and they are all right but there is a little something funny about it. I was sure there was some subtraction. I began to look closely. It seemed as though all the problems had mysteriously changed to addition. After a close look I could figure out which were addition and which were subtraction. She had VERY carefully changed all the problems to addition with a pen and done a very of job of it. It was not so easy to figure out what was what. When I told her I knew what she had done she began to giggle. I told her she could not do that anymore and let her know that she had to pratice both even though she may enjoy one more that the other. I ask her if she though what she had done was cheating to which she replied "no Ma'am Momma that's being smart".

Oh my, that is too funny!! I can't believe how quick they are! Emily has just started double digit subtraction with word problems and is finding it a bit of a challenge. She came to me today with the correct answer, but the problem had not been written out. WHen I asked her how she found the answer she said, "I just used your calculator!!" When I explained that that was cheating she asked exasperatedly, "Well, then, what good are they if you can't use them!?!?" LOL

My son tried cheating on math a few times. The first time I was suspicious. All problems correct and he finished much faster than usual. It took a couple of these before I caught up with him actually doing it. He was taking the answer key and coping the answers. That was last spring and haven't had a problem since on that anyway. It's amazing what they try sometimes. Hope your enjoying homeschooling. I'm now in my 6th year homeschooling and gald we do.

I know this comment is really late considering the date of your post... that story is really funny. Your daughter sounds like a hoot! :o) I used to teach second grade and I can see some of my former students trying that. :o)
