Sarah and I baked for most of the day today. It started out with the idea I would make a batch of cookies for Paul to take to work to share with his friends. Then we decided to add brownies to that, then we thought one type of cookie wasn't enough, so we made another kind. That meant we made brownies, snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies. I like to bake, but I'm a simple kind of baker. I don't make to many extravagant desserts, though I have been known to try one or two once in a while. But these are what my family likes, so that's what I make. No matter what I'm baking, I usually always try to make some chocolate chip cookies, since that and brownies are what Paulie eats. My sister makes a great peanut blossom cookie. I can never make mine come out right, but who knows, maybe I'll try again this year.
This baking time was special for Sarah, because I was actually showing her how to make all this stuff. She pretty much did everything, except I rolled the snickerdoodles into balls, and she smashed them with a glass. This was the first time she's baked from scratch, because Sarah has an allergy to raw eggs. Not cooked eggs, thank goodness, just raw ones. So obviously baking poses some challenges. I made sure every time she was done putting eggs in the mixture, she washed her hands. With the brownies, we think the spoon had some egg on it, because by the time she was done stirring it, one part where the spoon was resting in her hand, was itching. But other than that, she did great. But that is one of the reasons I rolled the snickerdoodles into balls. I know as she gets older, she'll find her own way to work with this. But I am so thankful to the Lord that all went well today, she got to bake things from scratch for the first time and we had a great time together.
Of course I have pictures to share. And, yes, we have tried all of the desserts and they taste great. It's funny how now there is only one plate of snacks Paul is taking to work, the rest stays home.
The start of our baking time and the lessons have begun.
Sarah cooking on her own and the first time working with raw eggs.
Pouring it in the pan and the finished results, with the happy baker.
Yep, I got to do some of the work, and that's a picture of the happy baker and the result of all her hard work.
Have you tried substituting soy flour (1 T. soy flour + 1 T. water = 1 egg) or ground flaxseed meal (1 T. ground flaxseed meal + 3 T. water = 1 egg) for the raw eggs when baking? I used to use soy flour, but we wanted to get soy out of our diets. I happened upon the ground flaxseed meal as a replacer on the Canadian Flax Council website a year or so ago and have been using that ever since. We can't tell a taste difference at all (couldn't with the soy flour either). The only thing we've noticed is brown flecks throughout the finished product (if the finished product is light-colored). We aren't dealing with any allergies, just trying to cut costs. It's cheaper for me to use the flaxseed meal than organic eggs.
All those sweets look so delicious! I so need to find some time to do some baking since now I want a snickerdoodle, lol. Bless you two! It looks like you had a wonderful time together!
Wow those cookies look wonderful and your dd looks so proud :) Tomorrow we start the baking :) My dd wants to make a Chocolate-Covered Oreo Cookie Cake for Thanksgiving. I hope it will last that long...
Hey JoAnn, nice job on the baking lessons. Tell Sarah it all looked wonderful.
As one who has a child deathly allergic to cocoa butter, chocolate (dark and white due to the cocoa butter), and another child who is allergic to red dye #40, I can tell you that using the plastic food handlers gloves (non latex), does wonders in keeping their skin from touching anything that might cause problems. If you don't have those, sandwich baggies work well in a pinch.
It sounds and looks like you had a marvelous time. I just love all this mommy/daughter bonding time. It gives me some inspiration to do something with mine. Thanks for sharing, those pictures look great and I hope that the recipients of the treats are appreciative!
I can tell by the smiles on your faces that the day was a huge success. Is this the start of a new family tradition?
I got a kid's cookbook from the library and my two oldest sons picked something to try. They actually had fun making lunch for the family. Now if only I could get them to cheerfully help with the clean up...

I wish we lived near each other, I can just see me eating some of these delicious things along with a good cup of coffee and you to chat with it :)
I love the pictures!

I am a wife and mother of two. I started this blog to share the things the Lord shows me in my journey as a wife, mother, homeschool mom and His daughter. And in it all to "grow in the grace and knowledge of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
