NANO Cards and 4TH Activities

Posted in Kids-Family

I played NanoFictionary with all 3 boys today, for the first time. I had separated the cards by type and dealt 2 characters and 1 of each other type to everyone. Then I shuffled all the cards together. At first, my 11 yr old was being stubborn and just lying on the floor. (He has Asperger’s Syndrome). But after we started reading some of our cards out loud he became interested and joined in. I used the 1-5 cards to represent each round. We played 5 rounds in which we could switch our cards is we wanted. After the end of 5 rounds, we spent a few minutes brain storming and then had story telling time. My 9 yr old said he forgot his story, so I helped him think of a story. At the end of the game the 9 yr old kept his cards to think about his story some more. He came to me later with a great story he thought up with his cards. He has trouble when he feels pressured and just the fact that it was his turn to tell his story was too much pressure. So he froze up, but once the pressure was off he did a great job.

I have been thinking of getting the Eco Fluxx. I think when I do, I will take out some of the cards that say to draw or discard a different amount and add to the NANOfictionary. That could be a fun way of getting more characters. I don’t think the younger 2 are ready for the action cards yet so this would be an easier way for them to add to his cards.

Here is a card I made. Carol at looney Labs suggested I make my own card and stick to a NANO Blank, so the carda all look the same in the pile.

Brian was called into work. So it’s just us kids for dinner. The boys and I are having pizza. Korea has announced that they are testing missiles; which has some countries upset. This is why my husband is working today, on July 4th.

I plan on joining a homeschool group this fall. I have never really wanted to, but I look forward to it now. Its season has arrived. I am hoping to get a group of kids together for games. I wonder if Ron will let me use his back room of the hobby shop once a week. I have never seen it in use during the week and I could make sure to have a couple games that he sells in our session. I have done a game class for homeschool groups before. Everyone enjoys it. We love games and I think they are great educational reinforcement.  I wonder how that would go over. Sometimes Christians can be picky about things like that. Activities held at a non Christian facility, even if it isn’t really a “Religious Activity”. We’ll see what unfolds. Maybe Brian will get a 2 yr rotation in Germany and I won’t have to even think about it.

There is one more month until the first school session. August is Unit Study month. This year it will be on Money! I want to focus on the Oregon Trail and The Gold Rush and US Mints and the history/evolution of American Money. I also will get into foreign currency and world history of money and I want to spend some time on what is involved in being a numismatic.  Plus I have a good list of how to use the theme of money/currency theme to reinforce “The 3 R’s”.

Jul. 5, 2006 - Christian activities

Posted by vonfirmath
Go ahead and set it up where you want. If people don't want to take their kids there, that is their perogative, just as it is your perogative to take your kids where you want.

Just as christian parents can be picky about activities being at church or not, I've known non-Christian parents who get antsy if the activity IS at a church, so I think it parents being careful for how they want their children raised, not anything about Christians in general. however, just because some think that way does not make your decision to do it wrong. If EVERYONE you want to ask doesn't want to go where you want to hold it, then you might want to reconsider the location, of course.
