LOONEY LABS GAMES
LOONEY LABS GAMES
Take a look! They are fun!
A lot of the games are card games. Regular playing card sized cards.
Our favorite is ECOFLUXX There are GOAL cards, Keeper Cards, Action Cards and Rule cards. Keeprs are cards with a single picture (like bear, rabbit, dirt, water). Goal cards tell you which keepers to collect to win. A GOAL of MUD says to collect WATER and DIRT. A goal of MAMMALS will have you collect 2 cards with mammals (like bears and rabbits). Action cards will tell you what to do. the POLLUTION card eliminates AIR,WATER, DIRT,SUN keepers. RULE cards change the rules. Maybe a new rule will tell everyone to draw 4 cards (instead of one) or will make a keeper limit (of 1 or 2 or 3....) so everyone cannot have more than the specified amount of keepers. The goals and rules are constantly changing. So it's not always easy to collect the keepers needed. But next thing you know someone wins, it's almost never the pesonb who thinks they are ahead.
We use the game to review science words. Pollution, extinction, composting (this is one of my favorite cards!) and other things. I can have the boys draw cards at random and give me a science report.
I just learned how to play CHRONONUATS
It's fun! And has so much potential for teaching history! In the game, each player is a time traveler from an alternate universe. Players have to colloect artifax (Like General Tso's Chicken or a pair of Dodo birds), they also work on altering the time line to make it line up with their own alternate universe. This creates paradoxes which need to be 'patched'. And these can be reversed as well. What one person needs to change to get home, another needs to remain the same to get home. we can learn history as we go through the tiime line and additional research can be assigned. It looks like it would be good for Role Playing of people in histoty.
And for the Literary geek in me, there is NANA fictionary
It, too, is a card came. (I like card games, they are easily portable and I just love shuffling cards.)
In this game, players collect differnet cards. SETTING cards, PROBLEM ards, CHARACTER cards and RESOLUTION cards. Mixed in with these are ACTION cards (switch settings with someone, choose a card from the discard pile, add an extra problem to your story, ...etc). This game seems so easily adaptable for many levels. A complex came of actual writing stories as you go along, or a simple game of collecting a few cards and each player makes up a quick story for the group.
What I really like about these games is that they are easily adaptable (to levels and for school) and I can buy BLANKS, so we can make our own cards for the games. And, of course, the boys like the games.

looney labs and games for teachers
The best seminar I went to was done by Looney Labs. Partly because they all dressed up in Rabbit ears and Lab Smocks and were so excited about playing their games, partly because I liked the Freebies, partly because they LOVE PLAYING their games and played a lot of their games with us, partly because they seem to be really good games and partly becasue they are not $50 games like the ones from Mayford (which are awesome games, but $40-50)
When I got to the room they gave is a game for free! It is called NANO Fictionary
It is a deck of cards. Each with a picture and there are 4 differnet colored backgrounds. BLUE cards are SettingI grabbed two- they are "Up in the sky" and "the shopping mall just before closing". The 2 character cards I pulled out say "the little black cat' and 'a guy that always says, "Dude!"..' they are green, th problem cards are orange. The one I grabbed says ' a terrible accident invloving food' and I grabbed a yellow resolution card that sys 'duct tape saved the day again'. So they way the game works is you draaw a couple characters and a setting or to, a problem and a resolution. Then you make up tiny stories. You can have little kids each pick a different card, and you and the litle kids work on a story, you can have older kids pick al their own cards and each make a story using their set of cards, you can randomly choose a set of cards and each chils has to make their own sotry using the same set and read them to hear how everyone makes diffrent stories with the same cards. You can do outloud story telling where everyone takes turn adding tot he story and every few minues draw a new card to be addedint the story... AND I got 4 packs of BLANKS! Each pack of blanks has 4 characters, 2 settings, 2 resolutions 2 problems a wild card and an action. OOOH I forgot about the ACTION cards. That makes FIVE colors. There are purple action cards, tooI guess their are 4 standard action cards- Plagiarize, (steal a plot from another player's story by swapping it with a card from your own hand-swap the same color.) Uncrumple, take any card from the discard pile, put it in your own hand...and a few more. Those would be for playing the gamelike card game. There are also prize cards and completion bonuses. They actually didnt talkmuch about playing at the card game, they talked a lot about how to use this card game in an educational setting. They had a neat game called chronoauts, it's a timline game based on early american history or modern (2 diff decks)a and you have to make a different timie line by flipping certain cards to make a paradox and (what would happen if Lincoln didn't get shot? what other parts in the time line would change).. and making a changing in 1 card has certain effects on about 2-3 other timeline cards. But someone else's paradox can effect your own, and you also have to coolect artifacts and there are cards to reverse a paradox, etc. it looks fun.
They have a game called FLUXX that was fun, too.
Look them up! If you sign up as a teacher, you save 10%, but if you sign up your school as well, you save 30%.

Educational dice!
I took my boys to their gaming events today (RPG stuff) at the hobby shop. ( Now, for starters I am not PRO-All RPG activities. I dont allow games with wizards and witches and magic. But I allow battle games.- iot's the point of the entry...)
Anyway- I chat with Ron, the store owner, when I get here. I was looking through his bucket of dice. I love dice almost as much as my boys! In Rons bucket of dice I found dice with math functions on the side! I also bought 3 numbered dice. One is 8 sided, one is 10 sided and one id 12 sided. These will be great for math! They can roll a 12, 9, 7and roll a - and X. they would have to do 12-9X7=. How fun is that? Well, for boys who are obsessed with dice rolling! I also bought a clear plastic die that h as a tiny red die inside~! So my son working on basic times tables can roll this one die and have a complete math problem! The outside may be a 4 and the inside may be a 6 and he gets to do the problem 4 X 6=. Or he can roll the function die along with the double die!
It gets better! I ordered dice with fractions~! An 8 sided die. So there will be 8 fraction choices! They can roll a fraction die, a math function die and a number die! Or they can roll a fraction to change to a decimal! They have 4,6,8,12 sided fraction dice!
And better still! They have dice with parts of speech!
HEY! An inchworm just landed on my laptop!!! He is inching along the zipper of the case!. Hes really only about ฝ INCH. Hes so cute
..
O.K. parts of speech dice
it can be like Mad Lib with dice! And dice with W? (you know WHO, WHAT,WHEN, WHERE, WHY and I think HOW. I ordered blank dice! I want to make dice that have punctuation. Have two words on the board (a noun and a verb)
roll a ? and make a question with those two words, roll a ! and make an exclamation sentence with those same two word. My boys think EVERYTHIN is 20times more fun if they can use DICE!
AND
there is more!!! I bought a dice with Body Parts! Right hand, left foot, right arm, head, chest, etc
.. I am going to think of some game for our Sensory and Dyspraxia therapy. Maybe combine it with a number dice
roll both, get a right hand and 5 and have to tap something 5 times with your right hand
sounds basic, I know, but it could be very good for Kis Sensory integration and dyspraxia.
There were other neat dice, too!
Place value dice, decimal dice

Science Link and Curriculum Ideas
I am, once again, debating a packaged curriculum for the boys, at least for gavin.... it sounds like a nice idea, but it cost so much and I know I can do it for less money (just MORE TIME)
I found this site.It is full of sciene experiments and activities....
see... I don't need no stinkin' packaged curriculum.....
SCIENE CONNECTION PAGE
From the fron page: These lesson plans were developed by Science Connectors or modified by Science Connectors from existing activities. These activities cover a range of grade levels, but most of them may be easily modified to fit individual classroom use. We welcome anyone to print them and use them in their classrooms.
INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE Explore what makes a scientist!
BIOLOGY These labs cover neuroscience, general anatomy and physiology, and environmental science and animal biology.
EARTH SCIENCE Includes labs on earth science topics like erosion!
CHEMISTRY These labs cover basic chemistry concepts such as freezing point, moles as a type of measurement, oobleck and glurch, and metals and non-metals.
PHYSICS Currently includes projects involving electricity, buoyancy, and light.
MATH This lab uses candy to learn about probability!
I found a few sites on teaching scientific notation and it's uses (something I decided I wanted the boys to understand) and I have downloaded some Dioramama Projects (something I have always wanted to do, but never got to...) and I have that cool Enchanted Learning Membership......
