A Beautiful Actress and The King of Pop died today

Today was sad day for American and around the world.

Earlier today I received news that Farrah Fawcett  lost her battle from cancer. She was 62.

Then, this afternoon while watching the evening news, it was reported that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson died today. He was 50.

These two icons will be forever missed!

Thinking cold thoughts! It's a little warm in Texas

And the sad thing,  it's gonna get hotter!! August and September are typically the hottest months of the year.

I remember Texas being hot, but not this hot.!!   It's so hot that my feet burn through my shoes!!!

So, during these hot days, I'm going to think cold thoughts.....ice cream, snow, ice, snow skiing, cold showers, etc.

Double blessed on May 24, only 4 years apart.

May 24, a day my life changed forever! A day just 14 years ago, I became a mommy for the first time. At that time, I didn’t think life could get any better.

Garrett newborn by you.

Then, exactly 4 years later, I was blessed with my second child, my daughter

aundrea newborn by you.

I can’t believe my oldest is 14 and my sweet Aundrea is 10. One day you are bringing them home from the hospital, then you blink and they are 14 and 10!!  Where did the time go??  All I can say is time flies when you are having fun!! And, I’ve had a blast watching my children blossom into a mature 14 year old and a beautiful sweet 10 year old.

Yesterday we celebrated their birthday by having a birthday party for them. As usual, and part of our tradition, I made their cakes.

Garrett requested red velvet with cream cheese frosting.

IMG_5647 by you.

Aundrea wanted a chocolate cake

with chocolate icing.

IMG_5653 by you.

I baked the cake and the kids decorated their cake.

Aundrea’s theme was Hannah Montana and Garrett’s theme was 3D Star Wars.

IMG_5639 by you.

We had a wonderful time celebrating with family and friends.

Speaking of friends, my best friend from high school drove in from Houston to attend the party. It was so nice to see her and her family again. This makes the second time we have seen each other in the past 17 years. They will be moving to Kansas soon so we don’t know when we will see each other again. Thank goodness for email this has kept us in contact with each other all these years!!??

So I say Happy Birthday to 2 of my favorite people in the world. You have no idea how much I love you and how proud I am of each of you!!! Garrett, I can’t believe you are 14 now!! And my sweet Aundrea, you are 10! (You go girl)

Down to the final two...

Well, after months of faithfully watching American Idol each week, we are down to the grand finale. Tonight a new American Idol winner will be announced.  I, like most Americans who watch the show, are on the edge of my seat, nervous to see the final results. Though I would love to see Adam take the crown, I’m afraid Kris will take it. But, regardless who wins, both are guaranteed a record deal.

Throughout the show, Aundrea and I have had two personal favorites….Allison and Adam.  It’s too bad Allison was voted off during her best week…rock week.   I’m so glad I learned how to use my DVR a few months ago!!  The duet between Adam and Allison a few weeks ago was “rocken” (as my kids would say).   Personally, Kris is too predictable you were guaranteed a slow song from him…even tho he can sign well, I like a variety….Adam, being the entertainer that he is, and his performance usually leaves us speechless. I love that he is unpredictable!  Adam had a way of spicing up the show. He can take any song and make it his own. Amazing. So, good luck to both Adam and Kris and may the best entertainer win!

Adam is on the left and Kris is on the right.

Praise offering!! House is rented out!!

On Tuesday, our rental house was placed in the online edition of the Austin American Statesman. Well, Tuesday we didn’t receive any inquires. I was feeling a little down, thinking nobody would inquire about the house. (We raised the rent 80.00 from the last time it was on the rental market). By Wednesday morning, we started receiving inquires and making appointments to view the house.  On Thursday I had 2 scheduled showings. I was supposed to have a showing on Friday, but she wanted me to send pictures of the backyard. So, I did. She decided the back yard was too big for her to maintain. After 15 inquires (praise GOD), we decided to go with an older couple. We met with them this past weekend; they signed the lease and will begin moving into the house immediately.

I feel extremely blessed for our house to rent out so quickly and at the price we wanted. We raised the rent to stay competitive with other rental houses in the area. At first, I thought 980.00 would be too steep. Well, after looking at other rentals in the area going for well over 1,000 monthly, ours is a bargain. Plus, it’s at the prime location…close to everything and with a large shaded yard.

So, I just want to say Praise God!!! Thank you!!

Going up instead of down.....

Here is my starting weight for this week. So, I've gone up a few pounds from my weigh- in last week.  Well, after all, what do I expect, I've only worked out one day last week, ate 2 donuts on Saturday and a slice of strawberry cheesecake on Sunday. Ok, I need to work out double time this week…especially since we are celebrating not one but two birthdays in our family this weekend.

Prayer request for a 5 month old baby.

I don't normally send prayer requests on my blogger but this is for a  dear friend of mine I met while we were stationed in Italy.  They are currently stationed in Naples and a strong Christian family who desperately needs prayer-and lots of it!!  Marcello is their 7th child and was born December 2008.  I know they would appreciate any prayer!! Thank you!!

Please keep the Montanez family in your thoughts and prayers.  Carlos and Letika's baby, Marcello, has been having heart related problems over the last few months.  They have seen a specialist in Naples which admitted him into a local hospital.  They have learned that his heart must work harder than other babies his age and there is concern he is not gaining weight.  This afternoon, he was to have a catheter put through his leg to send a scope up into his heart.  There is concern that his lungs are getting too much blood. Letika will spend the night in the hospital. Different friends are taking care of the other children.

Updated information will be sent as it comes in.

Ok, everyone calm down!!

Yesterday I posted how I would like to lose a few pounds. Well, I had several friends and family members expressed their concern.  See, 16 years ago when I met Mark, I was anorexic...down to 105. At that time in my life I was experiencing a multiplied of problems and severe depression.  And, the only way I knew how to “solve” my problems was to avoid eating and thus I lost a lot of weight. So, like I said earlier, when I met Mark, I was down to 105. If it wasn’t for Mark, I probably wouldn’t’ be writing my testimony now. Mark was my saving grace. We met in May and by the following March, I had gained 10 pounds.

Now, fast forward to now…... My family and friends are concerned because they think I will revert back to my anorexic days. I can assure them I am not. I enjoy eating which explains why I have gained weight. I am simply starting a workout routine to tone up the body and to lose a few pounds. I just want to be a size 10 again. My eating habits remain the same-still love all types of food and my sweet tooth is still there. I am not dieting but simply increasing my activity flow to obtain a healthy life style. You know, take care of me! I preach to my children to stay active. I don’t want to be a hyprocriate to my children.

So, I appreciate everyone’s concern but I can assure I am not starving myself to lose weight. I am only working out. Besides aren't  we supposed to work out to keep the body healthy and the heart strong?

whooo! Lost a few pounds!!

A few weeks ago, I turned 37 and it was at that point when I realized I needed to change my habits. I was not happy with my current weight. In fact, before I started my workout program last week, I weighed in at 170, just shy of what I weighed  4 days before giving birth to my last child.....I weighed 172....  You  can see why it bothered me so much. Well, after I had Leo I was lucky enough to lose all my pregancy weight (40 pounds) but over the years, I  managed, somehow,  to gain most of it back  . Of course, you would think chasing after 3 kids would keep the weight off, but the weight somehow snuck up on me. So, here I am celebrating my 37 birthday with my parents.  I know, I dont' look that big but the table is hiding the fat....scroll down to the Easter photo of Mark and I and you can clearly see just how "big" I have gotton! I am brave for putting that photo on here.

IMG_5453 by you.

Monday, May 4, I weighed in at 170 and  started my brutal workout program with Billy Blanks. The first day, I could only handle 8 minutes. On Tuesday, I worked up to 24 minutes....Wednesday 45 minutes and Thursday I was up to 60 minutes!!  Whohooo!!

I love Taebo. In fact, Taebo is what helped me lose the baby fat after having Leo. I'll try to give a weekly update. My goal is to be around 140-145. So as you can see I don't want to lose a lot of weight. I just don't want to weigh what I weighed at 9 months pregnant.....it's a mind over matter thing....LOL!

Here is my weight as of today-167.6-not much of a lost, but it's a start!!  I didnt' work out today as originally planned because we did a lot of yard work on our rental house over the weekend and I am sore.  I will work out tomorrow!!  I have to!!!

Back on the rental market.....

Well, our rental house in Austin is, once again, back on the rental market....long story. So this past weekend, and Mother's Day, was spent getting the house ready to put back on the rental market. Thankfully we didn't have THAT much work to do-mostly the yard and touch up paint inside. So, here is our rental house. I love the way the trees surround which provides lots of shade for the back yard! If only I could have this yard with my San Antonio home, I'd be happy!!

6 months ago today-

Wow, has it been 6 months we left Italy and arrived back to the states!!   While I was living in Italy, I thought the day I would finally arrive back in the states would never come and now, I find myself yearning to go back to Italy. I know, call me crazy! But I do miss Italy. The food, the traveling, walking the ancient Roman streets, seeing the historical Greek and Roman buildings but most of all, being submerged in the Italian culture!!  Life in Italy was simple, yet complex at the same time.

9 Reasons to Drink More Coffee!! by Luch Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief

I was on my way to bed when this article came across my screen....of course, since it relates to coffee, I just had to read it. I love all the health benefits and just another reason for me to drink more coffee. If it wasn't so late at night, I'd have myself another cup right now!!!

Here is the article.

9 Reasons to Drink More Coffee!

Ask anyone who knows me: I am a certified java junkie. I'm naturally energetic to begin with, but I rely on my caffeine companion to power me through long days, tough workouts and piles of work. I can even have three cups a day—including a dose after dinner—and still sleep soundly all night. Lucky for me—and the 87 percent of Americans who consume caffeine daily, with the average java drinker gulping down 8 ounces a day—more research is proving that coffee is actually healthy for you. So go on, have that latte without guilt. As if you needed more inspiration, here are some brew benefits to prove that sipping is smart:

It helps you shed pounds
People who drank more metabolism-firing caffeine gained less weight over 12 years than those who cut back on the coffee, say researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston.

It powers your workouts
Downing coffee and toast between back-to-back workouts can keep you humming, a study from the Journal of Applied Physiology reports. Athletes who drank a caffeinated carbohydrate beverage after cycling had 66 percent more glycogen (an energy reserve) in their muscles than those who had a caffeine-free version. Replenishing glycogen helps you go farther and faster in your next session. Do you run on caffeine?

It helps you wake up refreshed
Drinking a cup of coffee immediately before taking a 15- to 30-minute catnap can leave you alert and rested after waking up, according to research from The Sleep Research Centre, Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England. Caffeine takes a half hour to kick in, so it will rouse you after a short snooze. Try these tips to sleep your way gorgeous.

It can ward off illness
Increasing your coffee intake may prevent liver cancer, The National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden, finds. Two cups of java daily lowered a person's risk by 43 percent on average. In another study from University of Minnesota at Minneapolis, women who drank coffee had a 24 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease and other inflammatory conditions. Antioxidants in coffee are likely behind the protective benefits.

It can ease muscle cramps
Women who had the caffeine equivalent of two cups of coffee the day after their quadriceps were stimulated (as if they'd done squats) felt 48 percent less leg pain within an hour, research from the University of Georgia in Athens reveals. Caffeine may block the body's receptors for the ouch-causing chemical adenosine, scientists speculate.

It makes cardio feel like a cinch
Women given the caffeine equivalent of about two cups of coffee an hour before cycling reported 40 percent less pain than those who went decaf, according to a study from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Caffeine seems to block neurotransmitters that signal discomfort during exercise, researchers say.

It helps you get want you want
Dealing with a difficult person? Broach a tough topic over a cup of joe. Caffeine may make people more open to persuasion, the European Journal of Social Psychology notes. Researchers say it hones cognitive function, causing skeptics to be more receptive to a convincing case.

It may fight breast cancer
Young women drinking four or more cups of caffeinated coffee daily reduced their breast cancer risk by 40 percent compared with nondrinkers, a study in the Journal of Nutrition finds. The caffeine and polyphenols in regular coffee protect against cancer. Worried about getting the jitters? Even two cups every day can help. And try these risk-reducing recipes as well.

It improves recall!
Caffeine perks up short-term memory, a study from the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria reveals. One cup of coffee may be all it takes; drink it before a big meeting to be your sharpest.

Want a delicious, lowfat treat that packs coffee's powerful punch? Bake up a batch of warm chocolate cakes with coffee creme anglaise.

Swine flu in Texas- "our public school district"

By Elizabeth Allen - Express-News

As the number of suspected or confirmed local cases of swine flu climbed to 12, the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District said Sunday it will close all its schools for at least one week.

The district also canceled today’s planned public meeting at Steele High School in Cibolo, where the two Texas cases of swine flu were confirmed last week.

Another 10 suspected cases are being tested — all from the school district or household contacts of the infected students, and ranging from a 6-year-old to people in their 40s, Dr. Sandra Guerra, regional medical director for the Texas Department of State Health Services, said Sunday.

And there may be more out there.

Linda Moses of Cibolo said she's been sick with vomiting, diahrrea and a cough, and both of her sons have shown flu symptoms as well. One attends Clemens High School.

“I allowed him to go over and spend time with his grandparents, which I'm a little worried about now, because that's the last thing they need,” Moses said.

She hasn't been to a doctor yet, but said with the news of the district-wide closure, she's planning to see one as soon as possible.

“It was scary anyway, but it's really kind of hitting kind of close to home now,” Moses said.

Schertz has also closed its public library, Guerra said. Cibolo has closed its parks and is asking churches and places where people gather to postpone activities. It is asking private developments to close their parks as well.

Employees of Bexar County who live in Guadalupe County are being asked to be extra vigilant, and if they or any family members have flu symptoms, to stay home, said Bexar County spokeswoman Laura Jesse.

“Since the school district has made the decision to shut down for the next week, we advise our employees to use their better judgment, definitely, if they are feeling ill, not to come to work,” Jesse said.

That goes for the general population, too, said Emily Palmer, spokeswoman for the Texas Department of State Health Services.

“Our recommendations are that people who are sick stay home,” Palmer said. “I don't want to minimize this. We are concerned and we are actively doing surveillance.”

The state also wants doctors to change their normal approach to possible influenza patients, Guerra said.

Instead of running their own tests or using private labs, doctors should contact the state or Metropolitan Health District officials and use those labs to test throat cultures, she said.

She fully expects Bexar County swine flu cases.

“I think we're prepared for that,” she said. “We understand people are people, and we tend to be mobile.”

Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, noted in a press briefing Sunday that only one of the 20 confirmed U.S. cases had been hospitalized.

In Mexico, hundreds have been sickened with the same strain of swine flu that is affecting people in the U.S., and numerous people have died, with 12 of the deaths confirmed as the same strain. Canada has confirmed several cases, while New Zealand and Spain are investigating possible infections.

Why that strain at this point appears to be more lethal in Mexico is still a mystery, Schuchat said.

It's also too soon to say why it appears to be affecting young, healthy people as opposed to the very old and very young, who are generally the most vulnerable, she said.

But those numbers may change as more cases are diagnosed, which health officials expect.

Rebecca Villarreal, spokeswoman for the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City district, said the situation is changing every day.

The school district has set up an information hotline at 210-619-4700 for parents and school employees to call for updates, Villarreal said.

“We recorded the message for the week, and if there's a change we'll update it,” she said, adding that the district is working on adding a Spanish version of the message. “We know we're going to have questions, especially come Friday, (when) the big question will be, ‘Is there going to be school on Monday?'”

The tone of that question may depend on whether it's being asked by parents or students.

“The kids are doing a happy dance,” said Ken Singel, who has a middle-school and high-school student in the district. “My wife's telling me that she's not going to let 'em out, but ... the little one is already agitating for Schlitterbahn.”

Singel's wife is a nursing professor, he said, so they're taking precautions, but are not overly concerned.

Finally,updates!

Wow, where do I begin?? March was a busy month for us!!  Ok, let me start by dates.....

First and foremost, Mark and I celebrated our 15th year anniversary!!

And a current photo of the happy couple...taken Easter 2009

Not only have our love for each other grown, it appears so did our waist line!! hehe

And we picked up the keys to our new home on our anniversary!  What a way to celebrate our anniversary!! Yes, we "closed" on our anniversary!! Take about the best anniversary gift  ever!!

IMG_3758 by you.

We decided to take a few weeks off from textbook learning and give the kids a class in carpentry skills. ...kinda a hands on learning.....We had a great time working together as a family putting together this massive swing set/play house.  But, by the end, each child knew the difference between a wood screw, hex screw, washer and bolt screw. They also knew what size of boards to look for depending on the photo directions.

The following pictures are of the process....

While not working on the swingset, Garrett  put the sealer on the fence....watching him work reminded me of the popular 80's movie The Karate Kid..."wax on, wax off"....and the funniest part, Garrett  used to take Tae Kwon Do lessons.....by the way, he did an awesome job on the fence!!

Well, while working on the fence, he peeked over the fence and what did he see....deer!! Yip, you know you are in the country when you see deer in your backyard!! (more deer pictures later)

This Easter was special!  We were able to celebrate with family (did I mention how much we love being back home!).

Our Easter dinner was not  your typical Easter dinner with ham and the trimmings....no, we had a Mexican style Easter cookout....complete with homemade tortillas...my favorite...I must add that I did not make them.....actually Mark's cousin made them for us....which I am forever grateful....try not to droll!

And now, Garrett's turn...Aundrea was too smart...she just sit back and waited for candy!

IMG_4481 by you.

So, what do you do after you bash the pinata for candy??? Well, you put it on your head and act like a monster of course! Leave it to Leo to come up with this...yes, complete with monster noises!!

It doesnt' matter where you live or how you celebrate Easter but no Easter is complete without dying the eggs!

I believe this concludes the Easter pictures. We had a wonderful time celebrating Easter with family. Now, as promised, more deer pictures.  On the other side of our fence is a creek. Every evening, like clockwork the deer will come to the creek for a drink. Usually we see 3-4 but last night we saw 7!   These pictures were taken last night.

Ok, so let me see....anniversary, house, projects around the house, Easter and deer, I believe this is all for the updates. As you can tell, we had a busy March-April. And, pssst, we are about to celebrate a birthday next week...wonder who??

Before I forget, I had to add these pictures of our crazy cat. Last night while we were watching our weekly dose of American Idol, this is how Jaguar was sleeping. I told you he was a crazy cat.

Folks from Texas

Dont' understand those "Texans" .....well, hopefully Jeff Foxworthy can simply things for you....

For those lucky enough to live in the Lone Star State, grab a tissue because I know you can relate to at least one of these!

Here is what Jeff Foxworthy has to say about folks from Texas...makes you fell kinda proud to live here!

If someone in a Lowe's store offers you assistance and they don't work there, you may live in Texas ;

If you've worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you may live in Texas ;

If you've had a lengthy telephone conversation with someone who dialed a wrong number, you may live in Texas ;

If "Vacation" means going anywhere south of Dallas for the weekend, you may live in Texas;

If you measure distance in hours, you may live in Texas;

If you know several people who have hit a deer more than once, you may live in Texas ;

If you install security lights on your house and garage, but leave both unlocked, you may live in Texas ;

If you carry jumper cables in your car and your wife knows how to use them, you may live in Texas ;

If the speed limit on the highway is 55 mph -- you're going 80 and everybody's passing you, you may live in Texas ;

If you find 60 degrees "a little chilly," you may live in Texas ;

If you actually understand these jokes, and share them with all your Texas friends, you definitely live in Texas .

Happy birthday to Pi

Came across this interesting article today.
 Garrett wanted me to add it to the blog...
Next to Mark, Garrett is the math wiz in the family.
By Teresa Schmedding and Neil Holdway | Daily Herald staff writers

The decimal places go on forever, making it "irrational," and it can't be expressed by any algebraic equation, making it "transcendental."

No apparent pattern emerges in the succession of digits - a predestined code found in nature yet unfathomable.

Pi history

• Pi possibly first entered human consciousness in Egypt.

• The earliest known reference to pi occurs in a Middle Kingdom papyrus scroll, written around 1650 B.C.

• Early Greek calculations had determined that pi is approximately 3 1/7.

• In A.D. 190, the Chinese calculated pi to five places: 3.14159.

Pi decimal race

• In September 1999, Dr. Kanada of the University of Tokyo calculated 206,158,430,000 decimal digits of pi.

• In September 2002, he and his team broke their own world record, with 1.2411 trillion digits, over six times more than before.

Pi birthdays

• Albert Einstein • Kirby Puckett • Billy Crystal • Quincy Jones • Michael Caine

Pi limerick

The number pi's a ratio pal. Whose fame is international. C to diameter, endless parameter, to me it's all irrational!

Pi haikus

A circumference divide by diameter irrational pi.

Unending digits... Why not keep it simple, like Twenty-two sevenths?

What a week....weekly update

This week was an extremely busy week for us.

We celebrated retirement, buried my grandmother and found time to squeeze in a couple field trips.

 But first of all.......

 Mark officially retired from 21 years of active duty service to the Navy!

Whohoo, we made it! I'm so proud of you honey!!

Spring Break came early for us.

While in Corpus, we had a wonderful time with our friends (who is more like our family).

We love you guys!!

My dad is soo cool....he's touching a shark !!!

 Leo had to tell everyone that his daddy touched a shark!!

Looking at the sharks in the shark tank. I wonder just how thick that glass really is. I have to admit, watching these fish swim around was amazing. WE couldn't get over just how huge these fish are....especially the sharks.

Along the way, we found Nemo, Dori and Bubbles.....and Crush-see below

After watching the dolphin show, Leo wanted to see if the dolphins would do tricks for him. As you can tell, these dolphins are well trained!

And while in Corpus, we found a huge shark!! Thankfully it was fake...none the less, Leo just though this was "too cool"because he could go inside a shark without being eaten. Needless to say, he was quite relieved to know this was not a real shark.

We returned to San Antonio wih just enough time to pack up again-actually we didn't have time to unpack- and take the long drive to the panhandle of Oklahoma to attend  my grandmother's funeral. I am so thankful and feel extremely blessed to be able to say my final goodbye to my grandma. If we were still in Italy, I seriously doubt we would be able to attend. I feel blessed to be able to say goodbye. One of my grandmother's request was to have Mark wear his service uniform and be one of her Pall Bearers.   It was a sad day and my grandmother will be missed by all who knew her.

One of my fondest childhood memories is when my  grandmother and I would drive from Woodward OK to Oklahoma City (for reasons I don't remember), stop midway at the famous Indian Cherokee Trading Post  and load up on  Catcus Candy.  Then, we would snack on this yummy candy all the way home. Well, fast forward many years.....since we were passing Indian Cherokee Trading post on our way to Woodward for my grandmother's funeral, I wanted to stop and get this candy to share with my own kids.....kinda of a family tradition.  Just in case inquiring minds want to know.....catcus candy tastes like very thick gummy bears.

Garrett decided to be brave and try the scorpion sucker. Yes, he ate the sucker but not the scorpion.

We stayed in Yukon, Oklahoma-home of  Garth Brooks!! (who by the way is one of my favorite country singers)

We even had time to relax a bit....does this count as PE time??

Somehow we ended back in Italy again!! (and to think, there is also a Paris, Texas)

After a long drive, we finally made it back to San Antonio, just in time to "Remember the Alamo" where we witnessed the dramatization of the events of the final two days (March 5 and 6, 1836) of the 13 day Alamo siege by General Santa Anna's Army of Operations.

In Loving Memory of My Wonderful Grandmother

In loving memory of my lovely grandmother who died today, Monday March 2, 2009 at about 10:30am.

 She would have turned 79 on her birthday-the end of this month and would have celebrated her 62 anniversary this year. (my grandfather is still alive)

101_4894 by you.

My grandmother was a wonderful person. She taught me how to cook and sew. Quilting, cooking and spending time with her family were some of her favorite pasttimes. You would frequently see her quilts in contests in which she won several. I'll have to post pictures of her quilts later. Did I mention that she is a GREAT cook!!  She loved to cook and I'll never forget her homemade bread and homemade cherry pie.  Growing up on a farm, you would expect just about all your food to be homemade and it was delicious!!

The last time I saw my grandmother was 2 years ago during our brief visit with my grandparents en route to Italy. I am so thankful we took the time to visit with my grandparents at that time. Never in my wildest dreams, did I think this would be the last time I would see my grandmother. She lived a wonderful life until congestive heart failure just took a toll on her body.  I did get to talk to her on the phone a few days before she became one of God's angels.

These pictures were take 2 years ago, the last time I saw her.

Rest in peace grandma. I'll miss you!!

What do you do when it's hot outside?

You go to the pool, of course!

With  the temperatures being  90+ degrees outside,

 we decided to take a dip in the apartment pool.

It's a nice sized pool only 3 feet deep, which is nice.

 As usual, the kids had a blast!!

We got the final approval from the bank!!!!

Whew!

We finally received the call we have been waiting for!

The bank approved our offer for the larger home.

We meet next week  with the loan officer to schedule our closing date-

which will most likely be sometime late March.

It would be perfect if we "closed" on March 20-our 15th year anniversary.

We will know more next week!

But, we are beyond thankful!!!

A visit to San Antonio Zoo

Yesterday, since Mark was off, we decided to take a field trip to the San Antonio Zoo.

This is the first time Aundrea and Leo have visited this zoo.  (We did visit the San Diego Zoo in 2004 so Leo would have been to young to remember).

Needless to say,  he was excited to visit all these animals he has been studying in  his Science.  The African animals were among his favorite animals to see.  He was thrilled to come this close to the animals he "colored".

Look a real live zebra!!!

He wanted to see the Giraffe, but it was hiding in the barn so Leo didnt' get to see this long necked animal up close. (maybe next time)

Watching the animals were the best part-especially the kangaroos. Yes, I have to agree with the kangaroo in the picture below.....yesterday was a perfect day to relax and let the crowds of people watch you.

Leo can hardly wait to visit the zoo again. Our next field trip will be to Sea World. We just have to wait until it opens for the season.

My secret for success...

Many people have asked me why is it I am so happy all the time, even through the most stressful days, why I manage to put a smile on my face and be cheerful.  Well, here is my long lost secret! Are you ready??  It's putting my full trust in God! Here is an email I received from my dear friend, Donella.

Thanks Donella for sharing this email with me!

The Secret

One day, one friend asked another,

'How is it that you are
always  so happy?

You have so much energy, and you never seem to get down.'

With her eyes smiling, she said, 'I know the Secret!'

'What secret is that?'

To which she replied, 'I'll tell you all about it,

but you have to promise to share

> the Secret with others.' '

The Secret is this: I have learned there is little

 I can do in my life that will make me truly happy.

I must depend on God to   make me happy and to meet my needs.

When a need arises in my life, I have

to  trust God to supply according to HIS riches.

I have learned most of the time  I don't need half of what I think I do.

He has never let me down. Since I learned that 'Secret', I am happy.'

The questioner's first thought was,  'That's too simple!'

But upon reflecting over her own life she recalled how

she thought a bigger house would make her happy, but it didn't!

She thought   a better paying job would make her happy, but it hadn't.

When did she realize her greatest happiness?

Sitting on the floor with her grandchildren,  playing , eating pizza or

reading a story, a simple gift from God.

 Now you  know it too!

We can't depend on people to make us happy.

 Only GOD in His infinite wisdom can do that.

Trust HIM!

And now I pass the Secret on to you!

 So once you get it, what will you do?

 YOU have to tell someone the Secret, too!

That GOD in His wisdom will take care of YOU! But it's not really a  secret...

We just have to believe it and do it... Really trust God!

Just  Pass It On

Thought for the day....History of Friday the 13th.

I don't normally belive in this stuff, but I did find this article interesting.

 Thanks to Yahoo news for this informative article.

13 Facts About Friday the 13th

The next Friday the 13th comes in March, followed by Nov. 13. Such a triple whammy comes around only every 11 years, said Thomas Fernsler, a math specialist at the University of Delaware who has studied the number 13 for more than 20 years.

By the numbers

Here are 13 more facts about the infamous day, courtesy of Fernsler and some of our own research:

1. The British Navy built a ship named Friday the 13th. On its maiden voyage, the vessel left dock on a Friday the 13th, and was never heard from again.

2. The ill-fated Apollo 13 launched at 13:13 CST on Apr. 11, 1970. The sum of the date's digits (4-11-70) is 13 (as in 4+1+1+7+0 = 13). And the explosion that crippled the spacecraft occurred on April 13 (not a Friday). The crew did make it back to Earth safely, however.

3. Many hospitals have no room 13, while some tall buildings skip the 13th floor.

4. Fear of Friday the 13th - one of the most popular myths in science - is called paraskavedekatriaphobia as well as friggatriskaidekaphobia. Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13.

5. Quarterback Dan Marino wore No. 13 throughout his career with the Miami Dolphins. Despite being a superb quarterback (some call him one of the best ever), he got to the Super Bowl just once, in 1985, and was trounced 38-16 by the San Francisco 49ers and Joe Montana (who wore No. 16 and won all four Super Bowls he played in).

6. Butch Cassidy, notorious American train and bank robber, was born on Friday, April 13, 1866.

7. Fidel Castro was born on Friday, Aug. 13, 1926.

8. President Franklin D. Roosevelt would not travel on the 13th day of any month and would never host 13 guests at a meal. Napoleon and Herbert Hoover were also triskaidekaphobic, with an abnormal fear of the number 13.

9. Superstitious diners in Paris can hire a quatorzieme, or professional 14th guest.

10. Mark Twain once was the 13th guest at a dinner party. A friend warned him not to go. "It was bad luck," Twain later told the friend. "They only had food for 12."

11. Woodrow Wilson considered 13 his lucky number, though his experience didn't support such faith. He arrived in Normandy, France on Friday, Dec. 13, 1918, for peace talks, only to return with a treaty he couldn't get Congress to sign. (The ship's crew wanted to dock the next day due to superstitions, Fernsler said.) He toured the United States to rally support for the treaty, and while traveling, suffered a near-fatal stroke.

12. The number 13 suffers from its position after 12, according to numerologists who consider the latter to be a complete number - 12 months in a year, 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 gods of Olympus, 12 labors of Hercules, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 apostles of Jesus, 12 days of Christmas and 12 eggs in a dozen.

13. The seals on the back of a dollar bill include 13 steps on the pyramid, 13 stars above the eagle's head, 13 war arrows in the eagle's claw and 13 leaves on the olive branch. So far there's been no evidence tying these long-ago design decisions to the present economic situation.

Origins of Friday the 13th

Where's all this superstition come from? Nobody knows for sure. But it may date back to Biblical times (the 13th guest at the Last Supper betrayed Jesus). By the Middle Ages, both Friday and 13 were considered bearers of bad fortune.

Meanwhile the belief that numbers are connected to life and physical things - called numerology - has a long history.

"You can trace it all the way from the followers of Pythagoras, whose maxim to describe the universe was 'all is number,'" says Mario Livio, an astrophysicist and author of "The Equation That Couldn't Be Solved" (Simon & Schuster, 2005). Thinkers who studied under the famous Greek mathematician combined numbers in different ways to explain everything around them, Livio said.

In modern times, numerology has become a type of para-science, much like the meaningless predictions of astrology, scientists say.

"People are subconsciously drawn towards specific numbers because they know that they need the experiences, attributes or lessons, associated with them, that are contained within their potential," says professional numerologist Sonia Ducie. "Numerology can 'make sense' of an individual's life (health, career, relationships, situations and issues) by recognizing which number cycle they are in, and by giving them clarity."

Mathematicians dismiss numerology as having no scientific merit, however.

"I don't endorse this at all," Livio said, when asked to comment on the popularity of commercial numerology for a story prior to the date 06/06/06. Seemingly coincidental connections between numbers will always appear if you look hard enough, he said.

3 months in the USA

Today is Feb. 10, a mere 3 months since we left Italy. Some days it seems like yesterday we left Italy; yet, other days it seems we have been in America for several years. I tell you, it's been an adjustment reliving the American way of life compaired to the Italian way of life.   Although we enjoyed our time in Italy, we are glad to be back in the good ole USA.

    Narrowed the search....

    We have narrowed our search down to 2 houses. The first is a 3bedroom, 2 bath and will be completed the end of this month. It is only 1625 sqft, a cozy little home, not much of a yard but doable. It does have a lot of extra features, like covered patio in the back  but no tile. This house will be equipped with 2" white faux mini blinds (which I love) The rooms are oversized so the boys could share a room. Aundrea's room would face the street (not to fond of this)

    The second home is the one I feel in love with! It is 2557 sqft with 4bedroom 2.5 bath, 2 story, larger yard and 4 Live Oak trees-2 in the front and 2 in the back- and no neighbors in the back (can't build in the back because of a creek).This house has tile in the kitchen, all bathrooms, utility room and entrance way.  The lovely house is equipped with a formal dining room, breakfast nook, a family room, living room, and a upstairs game room which can be used as a 5th bedroom or school room!  We also have more space between houses.  This is also a new construction but is completed, just waiting for us to move in.

    So there you have it.  My choices.

    To clean or not to clean, that is the decision.......

    Today is Sunday, and the first Sunday we didn't spend in Austin working on our rental house. I should take this time to get the much needed "clean out closets, organize junk" type of cleaning; but, I am not motivated. The weather is overcast, perfect for curling up with a good book, watching a movie, relaxing.....or updating the blog!

    January was a busy month for us, to say the least.

     Let's start with a little history lesson from Wikipedia....

    The inauguration of Barack Obama as the forty-fourth President of the United States took place on January 20, 2009. The inauguration, with a record attendance for any event held in Washington, D.C., marked the commencement of the four-year term of Barack Obama as President and Joseph Biden as Vice President. With his inauguration as President of the United States, Obama became the first African American to hold the office and the first president born in Hawaii. The theme of the 56th inauguration was "A New Birth of Freedom," commemorating the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln.[1]

    January 20 was spent being part of history and learning about our new President.

    We wrapped up the final work on our rental house. Here is Leo checking out the attic...no bugs or monsters....all is clear! So glad he was brave enough to check out the attic. I only wish you could see his little pinlight flashlight he used to look around.

    103_1821

    And the kids helped with huling off the leaves.  We spent the entire weekend raking leaves. We filled over 24 bags with each bag being 42 gallons.  The boys worked hard while Aundrea supervised, making sure the boys loaded each bag correctly into the trailer. (she is good at supervising :0

    103_1822103_1823

    We did a little bit of landscaping....planted a tree and monkey grass-hopefully the grass will start sprouting.

    103_1826103_1825103_1824

    The backyard is in desperate need of work!!  Within the next few months, we plan to lay more dirt and plant grass.  Note the bags of leaves. The kids and I spent one weekend just raking up leaves. The yard was covered!

    103_1830103_1833

    Well, after all this hard work, we have decided to rent out the house..  The ad went into effect at 0800 on a Friday morning and by 0830, I was starting to receive calls.  In the 4 days the ad was in the paper, we had over 30 inquires.  By Saturday afternoon, we had decided on a lovely couple. She called on Friday morning, viewed and signed the lease on Saturday.  They moved in yesterday, Feb. 7.

    And, now the search begins......Since we decided the drive to Austin would be too far for Mark to commute daily-90-120 minutes each way on a good day of traffic-, we are looking into buying a house in San Antonio. In the past 3 weeks, we have looked at 4 different houses.  Our lease in this apartment expires the end of May and so we hope to be in our house by that time. Finding that perfect home is hard!  Most likely this will be our retirement home, a home we would like to live in for the rest of our lives, not an investment home like our other 2 houses. I am not picky, but I would love a house with a pool, lots of space-but not too big-tile floors (so we dont' have to tile another house), lots of yard space for the kids to burn off their energy. See, not picky at all!  oh and the price has to be within our budget!   Thankfully for us, there are a lot of homes to choose from-almost too many, as it makes it hard to decide on that "perfect" home.

    Bet they never had a cup of Kimbo cofee!!

    Here is an interesting article put out by Consumer Reports.  Now off to my daily dose of jolting caffeine compliments of  Kimbo!

    Consumer Reports Picks the Best Cup o' Brew

    Our top-rated Colombian coffee is also a CR Best Buy

    Folgers, Maxwell House, and Starbucks are America's best-selling ground coffees. But all three were iced by Eight O'Clock Colombian coffee in our taste tests. As for Starbucks, it didn't even place among the top regular coffees and trailed among decafs.

    Photo: Courtesy
    of Eight O'Clock Coffee

    Our tests of 19 coffees also show that some of the best cost the least. At about $6 per pound, Eight O'Clock costs less than half the price of Gloria Jean's, Peet's, and other more expensive brands.

    Like your joe without all the caffeine? Dunkin' Donuts and Millstone were the front runners among the decafs. But Folgers Gourmet Selection Lively Colombian came in close behind and costs up to $3 less per pound. But even the best decaffeinated coffees couldn't match the best regular brews in our taste tests.

    What we tasted
    Our coffee experts focused on 100 percent Colombian — a best-selling bean — for regular coffee. Most of our decaffeinated coffees are a blend of different beans.

    What makes a great cup of Colombian? Lots of aroma and flavor, some floral notes and fruitiness, a touch of bitterness, and enough body to provide a feeling of fullness in the mouth. Woody, papery, or burnt tastes are off-notes.

    Weeks of sipping and swirling confirmed that even 100 percent Colombian coffee and its Juan Valdez logo don't guarantee quality. Our trained testers unearthed other surprises:

    Still so-so after all these years
    Chock full o'Nuts and Maxwell House have pushed coffee that's "heavenly" and "good to the last drop" since 1932 and 1907, respectively. But off-notes, little complexity, and, for Chock full o' Nuts, variable quality put both behind Eight O'Clock.

    When boutique isn't better
    Midwest-based Caribou and Kickapoo beat an array of larger players among regular coffees. But Bucks County Coffee, from Langhorne, Penn., tasted only OK, and Peet's, from Berkeley, Calif., was burnt and bitter, despite costing $14 per pound. Peet's, Archer Farms, and Kickapoo also varied from batch to batch.

    Caffeine differences
    None of our decaffeinated coffees had more than 5 milligrams of caffeine per 6-ounce serving. But among regular coffees, Caribou and Bucks County had roughly four times the caffeine (195 milligrams) of some of the lowest-level brews. Medical experts say up to 600 milligrams per day is probably safe for most and can help keep you alert. But heart patients and women who are pregnant or nursing should stay below 200 milligrams, which might mean sidestepping those brands among the caffeinated coffees we tested.

    How to choose
    Several of our top coffees could save you $25 to $70 per year over pricier brands even if you drank just one 6-ounce cup per day. Here's what else to think about:

    Consider how you take it
    Coffees judged very good taste fine black. Milk and sugar can improve a mediocre coffee, but not even cream is likely to help the lowest-scoring decafs.

    Choose a good coffeemaker
    The best
    coffeemakers from our January report reached the 195º to 205º F required to get the best from the beans and avoid a weak or bitter brew. A top Michael Graves model costs just $40.

    Consider grinding for fresher flavor
    Even the best pre-ground coffee can't beat the best fresh-ground when it comes to taste. One top
    grinder from our January report, the Mr. Coffee IDS77, costs only $20.

    Consumer Reports has no relationship with any advertisers on Yahoo!

    Weekly update

    Well, the kids and I survived the first week back to school after our long break. I was surprised, by Wednesday we were falling into our routine.

    Here is a weekly recap:

    Garrett, the 8th grader!

    Histoyry: He covered ch 4  from the SOTW4, The Unification of Italy.  He said that studying this chapter was easy since we just returned from Italy and he has seen the statue of Garibaldi (several times) and has been to the Victor Emmuanel monument in Rome-otherwise known as the tomb of the unknown solider. Geography included a map page over Italy-labeling the states of Italy. He also outlined chapter 4, making sure to recap the highlights of the chapter.

    Next week, we will begin a month long study over The Civil War.

    Grammar this week was a review over verb tense-past, present and future .

    Writing-writing a plot to a movie. He chose a science fiction movie-kinda reminded me of the Terminator with more graphics, bigger guns and more robots trying to take over the world. He has a strange yet vivd imagination.

    Math-(pre-algebra) finding the LCM and the GCF. He also had a lesson over Similar Polygons.

    Spelling and vocabulary-continued his study over Latin and Greek words. (logo-greek, verbum-latin,nomen-latin, and video-latin)

    Science-he completed 2 experiments this week.. His first one was to understand how  sound waves are different. First, he had to listen as I clanked together two spoons. Then, he had to put his ear in a sink full of water while I clanked the spoons together again. He had to observe the different sounds the spoons made in and out of the water.

    His second experiment for the week, covered the study of mixing cornstarch and water together and finding out the results.

    First, he added cornstartch

    103_1712 by you.

    Then he added water:

    He realized it was almost impossible to stir.

    103_1719 by you.

    Well, he wanted to know what would happen if he added more cornstarch.

    103_1716 by you.

    He realized he couldn't stir. So, he let the "solution" sit for a few moments and observed.

    103_1720 by you.

    He concluded the solution gets watery if left alone but turns to solid if kneaded.

    103_1724103_1721

    Jaguar checking things out.103_1732

    As you can see, they had way too much fun with this experiment. Both agreed this "solution" felt like playdough.

    Art Appreciation-studied various masterpieces by Paul Gauguin.

    Music appreciation-studied and listened to pieces by Ravel.

    Music practice-practiced his electric guitar for 5 hours this week. He is learning how to play the song, Iron Man. I know it isn't classical music but I thought I would let him play the song of his choice until we resume music lessons again.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Aundrea's weekly review: grade 4
    Math: she reviewed her double digit multiplication and started on triple digit multiplication. She also reviewed her basic multiplication facts.
    Grammar: verbs and how to find the verbs in a sentence (take out the prep. phrase). Studied the State of Being verbs.
    Daily Grams: review over cap., proper and common nouns, sentence combining and finding the subject and verbs in a sentence.
    spelling and phonics:  words that have the ch and sh sounds.
    writing: writing a paragraph over her favorite season. She chose Spring as her favorite season.
    Science: how flowers reproduce. Learned the female and male parts to a flower. Also, learned how bees help flowers reproduce. She also colored and labeled parts of  a flower and bee.
    History: no history this week. Next week, we will begin our unit study over The Civil War.
    Music practice: practiced her violin and piano for 6 hours this week.
    Art appreciation: read and discussed pages 4-11 from  How Artists See Work.
    Music Appreciation: studied and listened to pieces by Ravel.
    Here is Aundrea being silly...don't ask..... but what ever she is doing, it sure makes school fun!   I love my job!!
    103_1735 by you.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Leo, the soon to be 1st grader!

    Math: reviewed Kindergarden concepts...adding and subtraction to and from 20, counting to 100 by 1, 5, 10. Also, counted to 2,000 by 100's. Reviewed time concepts by telling time; ex. 10:15.

    Phonics: short a words. He is also reading more and more each day. This week, we worked on words that have the short a sounds such as cat, mat, fat. He also read the following sentences: The fat cat sat on the mat. I am a cat. See the rat sat on the mat. Pat the fat cat.

    Science and Social  Studies: We are studying the continents. He already knows the continents and can identify and point to on a map. So, for a couple of weeks, we will focus our time studying different animals from each continent. This week, we started with animals from Africa.

    Writing: we are incorporating his writing with his SS and Science. For every animal he studies for that particular day, he will write the animals name.  This week, he wrote Jaguar (because this is also his cat's name, he had to write this more than once), he also wrote Elephant, and Lion.

    Below is a picture of Leo coloring a picture of a Jaguar. As you can see, he had help from his cat named Jaguar

    103_1738 by you.

    Art appreciation: We are using the Draw, Write Now books for his Art. This week's lesson was learning how to draw a hen.

    We also had our weekly trip to the library where the kids, as usual, wanted to check out all the books in the library. I'm glad they love to read!! Sure warms my heart!!
