• Aug. 23, 2007 - Fruits of Our Labors

Posted in gardening

My hubby built me the most AWESOME raised garden beds, and now we're enjoying the (literal) fruits of our labors. I'll have to post photos of the garden tomorrow. (It was too dark outside once I got the camera battery charged.) Tonight for dinner we had some fresh corn on the cob (this is a variety that's small to begin with; the ears aren't "stunted") along with fresh cucumber slices:

And, yes the sunflower came out of the garden, too. (As soon as I cut it, about 4 more blooms opened up.)

And here are the cukes and one cayenne (which is just waiting for ripe tomatoes to help it make salsa).

Yes, they are that huge! After I harvested these, I had to go back and look at the seed package to make sure I hadn't let them grow too huge. The variety (I had forgotten what I bought by now) is called "Yellow Submarine." Yeah, I get it.

I've also had lots of lettuce & spinach, fresh basil and plenty of cherry tomatoes. (And already made fresh pesto once!) Soon I'll have romas & early girls. (I would have had some ripen earlier if the kids hadn't decided the first green tomatoes were to be thrown in the street as bombs.) And later on we'll have potatoes, too!

Tomorrow looks like a good day to teach the kids about making pickles!

My mouth is watering and my poor hubby is jealous of your corn! We just could not get it to grow well, and what did grow was eaten by the precious, sweet deer...
Enjoy God's bounty :)

Your vegetables look so good! We had to get ours from the market. We are still in an apartment and nothing grows on concrete! There is only so much you can grow in little containers on a postage stamp sized patio! Your cucumbers look fabulous!
