• Jan. 20, 2008 - A Mighty Fortress

We sang that classic hymn in church this morning. Our God ... a Mighty Fortress.

I found myself thinking that some people probably believe God is holed up in that fortress, uncaring and unconcerned about what goes on outside. But the Bible tells us He is that fortress - He is a strong tower - He is a refuge for His people. He's not hiding inside those walls; He is the walls that shelter us from those who would attack mercilessly. He willingly opens the doors to those who seek Him and desire to shelter in Him, but He offers impregnable protection against enemies.

What an incredible God we serve!

How true! I wonder how often we fail to run to Him for the safety because we don't think of Him as mighty as we should. I think sometimes the world convinces us He is not who we think He is. How important to always be in the bible and know He is our Strength and without Him we are nothing.

I do appreciate the confidence that we can find in knowing that God is our refuge. And it is amazing that when we don't spend time with Him that confidence is weakened. But of course it would be He is the one that gives us the confidence in the first place. I love the Old Hymns. We just started singing them again in our church on a weekly basis along with some contemporary music. And I am so glad.

Hymns do have quite powerful words, since most are straight from scripture.. is that a Luther hymn? We can rest on promises in our suffering, the promise that nothing can separate us, even death, as some are attacked and have died for their faith....
