Friday 21 September 2007 - Well, well, well... whatever

Hmmm.  I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed by the paltry response to my Rich Mullins tribute.  Ok, granted, it was not a conventional tribute.  I did tributes in my own words ten years ago, agonizing for hours over just what to say & how to say it, and I don't have the time and energy to do that again.  It's all been said already anyway.  Besides, why use my own words when his are so much better anyway?  What better tribute than to post some of his own lyrics?  Alright, so maybe I'm just odd or obsessed or something, but I really don't know how anyone could just read those words and go, "Huh, whatever."  Or maybe, "Hmmm, interesting."

And of course, I assume that if anyone thought anything more than that, they'd comment and say so.  But then again, I have to remember all the times that I really like a post and don't comment.  I also have to remember that there really are not a whole lot of people who regularly read this blog.  Yes, I know there are plenty of places on the internet where I could go and commisserate with like-minded Rich fans.  Been there and done that long ago and, given my obsessive tendencies, really don't want to do it again.  I already stay up too late on HSB and don't need something else to pull me further into cyberspace and farther away from the important things of life.

Still, I could not let the tenth anniversary of Rich Mullins' death pass by without doing something on my blog.  And even though I didn't make it clear at first what I was doing, I assumed people would recognize some lyric or another, catch the title reference, realize the date, and figure it out immediately.  (I know, that's expecting a bit much.)  And then I guess I was just sort of expecting a bunch of people to pop in out of the woodwork and write things like, "Oh, I just love Rich Mullins too," or "Calling Out Your Name is one of my favorites," or "Wow, I like Awesome God, but I never really listened to the words of his other songs..."

Oh well.  It's not like I'm crushed or anything.  And I was happy that at least a few readers share an appreciation for the beauty of Rich's words.

I just think the guy was a remarkable wordsmith (as well as a great instrumentalist and a pretty decent singer).  His word pictures still amaze me, as many times as I have read and heard them.  Who else writes stuff like that?  And as if his lyrics weren't unique enough, there was the music, in particular that hammered dulcimer-- not exactly typical fare.  Then there was the man behind the music.  What I didn't learn about his humble, barefeet-&-bluejeans everyman nature from going to concerts, I learned from reading, and it only made me appreciate the music all the more.

Oops, that's enough of my words, so I am off to other things.  Just had to get that out of my system.

(And probably only a die-hard Rich fan would catch THIS title reference.)

Edited 9/22 to add:  I am currently on a different computer and noticed that most of the fonts I used on the tribute posts are not showing up!   What a sad state of affairs!  Words that good deserve better than arial and times new roman, and if you are getting boring fonts, you're not getting quite the full effect.  So sorry, but there's not a lot I can do about it.

And while I am on the subject of wanting the full effect, would anyone be willing to tell me how I can get music on my blog?  (My teenager said she'd see if she could help, but I'm not sure she'll get around to it, or I might have to let her off cleaning the bathroom or something.)

I think maybe the last few weeks have been busy ones for a lot of homeschool bloggers. They just aren't reading as much right now. I liked your tribute, nicely done! I know his name fairly well, though I don't know that much about his music. Look what I've missed! I read quite a bit of the words you wrote and can see why you feel so deeply for his songs and the man that he must have been. I understand your deep feelings - I feeling similiarly about a particular musician. Songs are basically poetry put to music but some people just have an amazing talent for their craft - and that touches me deeply! Christian song writers seem to have that extra connection to God (the red phone, I used to say!) Being married to a man of few words and even less display of emotion, I find myself drawn to men who can express themselves so well in song, even better if they express their love for the Lord. (Not that I'd EVER want anyone else than my sweetie, don't get me wrong!!)

I also enjoyed reading about your first week of school. My second week consisted of Monday being normal, then the rest of the week fell apart, due to colds and other assorted things. We shall prevail! There's always next Monday!

Thanks for being so real in your posts and comments. I really do enjoy being your friend! I have burned many pots, fortunately, I've never yet burned down the house. By the way, I'm going to try your suggestion for having my youngest draw what she's hearing when I read the history book I mentioned. I'm so glad you suggested that! Thanks! Let's just hope I don't have their cold on Monday!

God bless!

Um, BJ, who's Rich Mullins? LOL!!! :) Sorry, I had to say that.

Okay, as for getting music on your blog.... here's one way to do it. Go here:
http://www.myflashfetish.com/myspace-mp3-players/ , pick your MP3 player style, hit create, and it will take you to the next page, where you add your songs. If you know the URL where a particular song is located, you'd type it in there. If it's a song you have on your computer, you can upload it to FileDen first (there's a link on that page to do that) OR you can click on the MP3 search tab and it will see if a particular song is already online that you can link to. (sounds complicated, but it's not- you just need a way to link songs to your MP3 player) I just typed in Rich Mullins and a list of his songs came up.

So pick your songs, add them to your player, then click "I'm done." It will take you to another screen where you either sign in or sign up. It will save your playlist and you can edit it later if you sign up/in.

Then next page will give you the code that you need for your MP3 player to show up on your blog. You just have to figure out where on your blog you'll put it!

Love, Alyssa

Sadly, I don't know who Rich Mullins was, and while I'm sure your tribute was very respectful and moving, this was my one post to read in September. 'Nuff said, and ....

.... On to October!!! Let's hope a fest to two is waiting for me...

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to light the fires of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
