Wednesday, June 18, 2008 - Fuzzy Logic a la Dad

You have to read yesterday's post in order to make sense of this one.  It may also help to understand that the little story I told in that post was related to Huz by Mr Spiderman, and then passed along to me by Huz.

Tonight before dinner, I was a little cranky with Huz for not hearing me when I asked him to help me put the leaf back in the table.  (He & Cheez always insist on taking it out when we play cards at night, and out it stays until the next family meal.)  As he pulled the table apart and hoisted the leaf back into place, he remarked rather good-naturedly, "You know, instead of grouching at me, you should be glad you have a husband who works hard all day and then mows the lawn.  I could sit around and drink beer and watch TV before dinner instead of being on the lawnmower."

I, being undissuaded from my orneriness, replied, "I'm tired of hearing how hard you work and how much time you spend mowing the lawn."  (This is true; I am.)  I continued, "You don't hear me going around talking about how I did laundry and chauffeured your kids to piano lessons and worked on your Parts List while I sat there, and then came home and slaved in the kitchen to make you dinner."

He, being undissuaded from his cheerfulness, winked at Fuzz and retorted, "Oh, no, you couldn't have been 'slaving' in the kitchen.  Because when Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation..."

I was momentarily dissuaded from my grumpiness.

I am laughing out loud right now, because 1) your husband is too funny and 2) that sounds like a conversation that could have happened at my house!

(still chuckling)
Have a great evening!

Let me get this straight: Your husband mows the lawn every night? Do you live on a golf course?

Speaking of yard work, I can't wait to read your post on weeds. Your comment was an excellent start. Let me know when you finish!

Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

Are you sure you just didn't blog from a situation from my house? This sounds like what happened at my house this weekend! In fact, I got so grumpy after all of it - I hired a neighborhood kid to mow and edge my lawn!

It was good to hear from you today - I'm going to try to put your blog addy in my blog feeder so I can keep up better :)

Yeah, TC's trying another road trip, but this time she's just bringing Fashion Bug and "Panic", aka Sasquatch. I haven't seen them in nearly 2 years, and I hear 13 yr old. Sasquatch has grown 5 feet and can now look me in the eye, my 5'10" eye. I hope my mom and dad are stocked up in food, food, and more food.

How funny! Looks like Huz "got your goat"! My husband is King of goat-getting. Much to my chagrin.

No contractions in this post, by the way!

What a treasure you have in your spouse! You truly are blessed. And what great kids! I love the pictures you put at the top of your blog. Your children are beautiful! It's nice to know that I'm not the only mom out there who doesn't keep her son's hair extra short, too.

Lol, as for the unschooling and strange mix of topics; I have just been letting my youngest choose his own path. Once in a while I try to throw in something to steer him towards that 'general education' like the story of Lewis and Clark. I'm hoping that if the book is written like a well written novel, he will devour it. If it's poorly written, he won't read it and then maybe I'll look for a well produced or at least funny movie on the topic. The History Channel actually does a great job teaching history so I don't worry too much about that subject.

As for the science, I've been searching high and low for biology books that satisfy his thirst. Some are too basic and leave him wanting more. I had him read the sample page for the Apologia Biology 3 and he liked it so I'll be purchasing that one. He wants nothing to do with birds. My fault as our house is filled with birds. We won't be using the book as a 'textbook'. No, just a reading book he can use as reference later. If he enjoys the read, he remembers the information.

The catlabs are actually high school level but I won't tell him that. He's ten and very sensitive to the level issue even though it doesn't effect his learning. He loves cats and wants to know all now. By the time he is in high school, he may not have that thirst anymore. So high school biology it is.

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to “light the fires” of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
