Tuesday, July 22, 2008 - Photo-Sharing Advice Wanted!

Alternate title:
I'm Home, But My Brain Is Still On Vacation...

...which is why my computer time the last couple days has been spent reading other peoples' blogs rather than writing on my own.  I have caught up on all my HSB friends' blogs and will do non-HSB blogs tonight or tomorrow.

Isn't that exciting?  Yeah, I thought so.  Just hold on, I'm going to ask for your advice in a minute here.

Before I read blogs, I finished downloading and playing with my 600+ vacation pics.  (Having two big memory cards & a laptop with me was great, as previous vacations have generally been limited to under 200 photos.)  And I know you'll ask me to post some, and I'm not making any promises, b/c posting photos is time-consuming.  Besides, since we were at a family reunion, many of the pics contain other people's children, and I hate to post those w/o permission and I hate to ask.

All this talk of photos brings up a question.  One of my cousins asked if I would post my pics on a website for everyone in the family to view.  This is where I could use some advice.  What do YOU use for photo sharing?  I have a photo-bucket account which I use for posting pics here on my blog, but it is a private account.  I don't care to make it public.  I could give my relatives my password, but I'd rather not.  That would give them access to all my folders, and the ability to play with the pics.   I doubt anyone would abuse it, but my photobucket folders are for MY use and I really would rather keep it that way.  I'd rather just grant access to specific folders, but I don't think I can do that.   SO... I'm thinking I should open another account, either in photobucket or another program like flickr, shutterfly, or snapfish.  Do any of these programs have a way to make certain folders accessible ONLY to certain people, W/O granting the ability to mess w/the pics?  (Not that I think anyone actually would.  I just don't want viewers having the same access to my photos that I have.)  For example, i could, if I wanted, make my blogposts (all of them or certain ones) viewable only to my friends or HSB users, etc, instead of everyone in the whole world, but that still doesn't mean those people would have the ability to post on my blog.  Kinda like that.

Even if you aren't sure about my specific question here, let me know what you use to let friends & relatives view your photos.  Do you like it?  Is it better than others you've tried?  Can you do it w/o making your folders viewable to the general public?

Thanks!!!

Oh, and I have no intention of sharing all 600+ photos on whatever site I end up using.  I will pick and choose 60-100.

Well, for the 2nd straight day I am still in my jammies past noon, so I need to put up the puter and get in the shower.  Yesterday was mega-laundry day, and today is unload-unpack-&-put-everything-away day.  (If you're wondering how I did laundry w/o unpacking all the suitcases, the secret is to put everyone's dirty laundry into one suitcase before heading home.)  No more puter til it's done.  Or so I say.

OK, when I get back to the blog tonight or tomorrow, I hope to see lots of photo-sharing advice.  My relatives will be grateful, and so will I.

My BFF is in Germany and uploads all her pictures on KodakGallery.com.
I don't know about privacy, though.

Hi Bethany! (do you prefer BJ or Bethany!?)
For the purpose you described, I have a website at geocities.com. I don't give out my blog addy to family (except 2 cousins I never see) or local friends/people. I do however give them my website addy. It's free to have a website @ geocities and they have online software to build your website- it's a "what you see is what you get" program so you don't have to know html to use it. I actually use Microsoft FrontPage to make my webpages though.

Geocities only gives you so much free space though. So I still have Photobucket host my pictures but, just like you can do here on HSB, I have my pics linked to where they're hosted on Photobucket. Nobody can mess with them.

So there's one thought for you!
Hope that helps! Get that laundry done! :)

Oh, I thought about Photoshopping heads but, well, didn't want to take the time to do that and wanted to keep it real. LOL! Plus, I don't think I got one of Josiah looking much better than he did in that photo! He was a stinker that night!
Love, Alyssa

Hey! I use Photobucket, but have all my albums marked private. Then, I change the code at the beginning of the html code to my blog so if anyone clicks on it they go back to my blog - not my album. I do know that you can send a Url for a particular photo album on photobucket - you might want to check that out. Hmmm... I'll be checking back and see what others say - I'm interested in knowing!!!

Have a great day!

Okay, so I don't actually have an opinion on any of the aforementioned photo sharing sites, but how's this for an idea?

Go over to blogspot.com, set up a blog, and send out invitations to your family members after setting the blog up as a private, non-listed one. That's what we did for relatives back in the Mitten. That way they can see the photos, but no one can alter them. Just a thought. You could even organize them by family that way, too... hmmm...

All righty. Back to my all-alone enjoyable week. I'm in the middle of a movie right now. :)

heehee! I was about to suggest Flickr, because they have a family and friends only setting, but their free account is limited to 200 photos. Maybe if you did some serious editing... ;o)

For my mom's 60th b-day party we used Dropshots. One thing I loved about it was how easy it was to drag and drop photos into the account. You should be able to make the account public and just pass out the address to everyone. Keep the password and such to yourself.

Happy putting-away-and-unpacking-everything day!

I use PhotoBucket too. So Valarie - how do you do what you do with marking things private and the re-routing??? Guess I should go to your blog and post that question...

Now, I did find this out recently about Photobucket. If you tag or put a description on your photos, then Photobucket's search engine will pick them up. But if they are unlabeled then random people are less likely to find them. Try is - search for something that is on one of your photos. Just be prepared that thousands of photos might come back since others have used the same word.

Of course, if people go to your Photobucket account from your blog, then they can look at all your photos.

I would like to know an answer to this also. Right now I am only uploading pictures I use on my blog.

Hey, I do that too! All the dirty laundry in one or more suitcases - usually it is more, with 5 of us for 7 days :)

Happy back from vacation! I am glad your laundry is getting under control.

Thanks for stopping by! I put up a couple of new posts tonight.

you got me curious, so I went out to read Help on Photobucket. Look at this FAQ - http://photobucket.com/faq?catID=40&catSelected=f&topicID=362

It looks like you could make one sub-album private, read-only for your vacation photos. You have to make your whole account Public, but then could you not make all the albums private? I am too tired to think this through, but since hopefully you are reading this with a fresh brain, you might be able to tell if this would work.

Let me know. BTW - I could not see any of your pictures with your current settings. How does a private account allow your blog to access them?

Going to bed now...

Thursday, July 24, 2008 - OK, Here's What I Found Out:
Posted by 40winkzzz
Looks like Bev was researching PhotoBucket the same time I was. And I feel kinda silly for not having done that more thoroughly before posing the question on my blog, but I guess I was tired. All it really took was my teenager grabbing my computer & saying, "Well, Mom, let's go to PhotoBucket and find out what we can do." So for those who are interested, here's what I found out:

*Although my albums are private, I can share them using a Guest Password. (My daughter simply clicked on the "Share Album" button near the top of the page and the rest was easy. Like, duh.) I can email my relatives a link w/the guest password, and they will be able to view the pics.

*With my current settings, I cannot limit the viewing to only the album I have linked to for them. If they want, they'll be able to link back and view all of my albums. (Which really is fine; I have nothing to hide. It's just that my albums have always been just for blog-posting purposes, not viewing-by-other-people purposes, and they are therefore kind of dumb and incomplete and i'd feel embarrassed to have other people peruse them.) To get around this, I could change some settings a la Bev's last comment (thanks, Bev; I would not have realized that had I not gone to the faq page you noted), or perhaps I could set up a 2nd account that is geared for viewing rather than posting.

Now to address a couple of concerns/comments that have been posed here...

CODES/REROUTING- Valerie, I don't think it is necessary to change codes, etc, if your albums are private. Clicking on my blog photos always takes the clicker to the photobucket main page, not my albums. People cannot get to my albums via my blog. (Ask Bev- sounds like she tried!) And that was the case even BEFORE I clicked that option on my account settings tonight. Again, i think it's because my album and sub-albums are private.

PRIVATE ALBUMS- Bev, you can do that in your account settings.

TAGS/DESCRIPTIONS- I checked this out after reading your comment, Bev, and it appears that the photobucket search engine does NOT yield pics from private albums. I used one of my Gettysburg pics tagged "General Meade" (b/c I figured that tag wouldn't yield too many hits). i typed that into the photobucket search and it came up with a mere 21 pics, none of which were mine. I tried this with a few other tags as well, with the same results.

All this confirms my decision to keep my albums private! How my blog accesses them is something I have never thought about, but it works. And since I can keep private albums and retain control over them, yet still allow friends and family to view the pics as "guests", well, i think that is what I will do.

I do appreciate the other suggestions and am considering eventually implementing the geocities idea &/or the blogspot option. But not right at the moment.

Thanks for figuring it out!! I just set my to private. I only occasionally share albums. And hey, my blog and other sites can still see the pictures. Go figure!

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to “light the fires” of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
