Saturday 26 July 2008 - I'm Not Sure I'm Ready to Be Quite This Convicted...

...but I think I'm going to follow the discussion anyway.  Because it's good for me to get out of my middle-class comfort zone of dSLR and laptop and 2400-square-foot TFLA and frivolous trips to MalWart...

Besides, I know the guy (homeschool foster/adoptive dad) who is hosting it.

I don't know if it will convince me to change anything, but it will sure make me think.  Although that might make me a "hearer of the word and not a doer".  Ouch.  Okay, maybe I won't  keep reading.  If I don't hear, I don't have to do, right?

Or not.

Anyway, it's food for thought.  "Following Jesus in Middle Class America".  Check it out here.

Thanks for the link, I think. The I think is because I did just get back from Walmart... and even spent an hour in Lowe's "killing time" while I was waiting to meet up with someone. What did I do during that time? Scoured the store to see if there was anything I could possibly buy! Oi. At least I only left with some CLR and light bulbs... but I was on the search for something that was a complete waste of money. I hope that guy writes more on his blog... it was definitely much needed food for thought!

Well, that was timely. As I prepare to teach 20th century history to the boys, I've been doing a lot of reading, including the teachers' notes. (NO, I don't normally prep as much as I have this year, I just find it really fascinating-there really is nothing new under the sun.) The last two days it has been finding out what the Bible says about socialism vs. capitalism and balancing taking care of the orphans and widows.

I'm glad you enjoyed my post about cleaning. I think you were the only commenter who actually understood why I can't host home group. The post from that blog go to my Facebook Page (yes, I am that lame) so a bunch of my OLD friends from high school (even lamer) read it. The funniest thing is the agnostic was the only one who came close to understanding and she said, if you like teaching, just do it. I used to work for Merry Maids and I learned all kinds of deep cleaning tortures, er...punishments, er...techniques.

As for having two blogs...Well, I have thought about combing them. But then I could only have one cool blog design.

I haven't followed the link, yet, but I will. Eventually. Although, I, too, have some reluctance towards having to think or change anything right at the moment! ;)

I do feel very privileged that you commented, and even referred another. It's nice to know that there are more than 2 that actually read....now there's 4! ;)

Thanks for such a comment that allowed me the opportunity to "click" without guilt, but the truth is we all have room to step in a direction of more love for others and less for self. I enjoyed your friend's post, and some others he had there, as well. ;)

Happy birthday to all your babies! I-yi-yi, is right! I'm beginning to realize why large families often have 1 big bash a year. I'm leaning towards that myself!

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to light the fires of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
