Monday 29 September 2008 - A Series of Somewhat Unrelated Comments

Because I really ought to go to bed, I now present to you...

A series of unrelated comments with an unintentional common thread of "weather".

(Really.  I had to go back and add that "common thread of weather" bit.  I was at #3 or 4 before I realized I had sort of a theme going.  Apparently I live in Michigan, where weather is always a hot conversational topic, no pun intended.)  Anyway...

ONE:
I was on a cabin retreat all weekend and I actually got my youngest child born and my house cleaned.

Stop looking at me like that and let me explain.  I have managed to get myself an entire decade behind on my scrapbooks.  I love to scrapbook, but I take way too long at it and hardly ever make time to do it.  But I did seven pages this weekend, which is great for me, and best of all, I have FINALLY scrapbooked September of 1998 - or part of it, anyway.  That means that -ta-da- my youngest child now exists in the scrapbook!  (And boy, did those pages bring back memories.  That teeny little baby?  My 21-year-old a little eleven-year-old boy?  Hard to imagine now.)

As for the clean house, my hubby, who ordinarily gets downright ornery if he has to do "my" work, always delights in cleaning the house when I am gone for a weekend.  Yes, I am spoiled.  My house gets cleaner when I go away than it does when I stay home.

In case you are wondering, this was not a scrapbooking weekend, except for me.  It was a do-whatever-you-want weekend with a few friends from church.

And a bonus:  we couldn't have asked for a more beautiful weekend.

TWO:
The weather has been gorgeous, and it's driving me nuts that I haven't been able to let the kids have much outdoor playtime during our schooldays.  Because that is supposed to be part of homeschooling, right?-- kids having ample time to run around and play together and enjoy beautiful weather while their schooled counterparts sit miserably in stuffy classrooms... Except that hours of outdoor fun just don't happen when we are busy running to drama on Tuesday afternoons and piano on Wednesdays and INDOOR homeschool soccer on Thursdays and middle-school enrichment classes on Fridays, and trying to get some schoolwork done at home to boot.

THREE:
There is somehow something very special and nostalgic and deja-vuey for me about having the leaves crunch under my feet as I hang laundry while the kids are on a "trampoline break". Perhaps it evokes memories of the beginning of our first schoolyear in this house, when *everything* was special.  I don't know.

FOUR:
As of today, the beautiful weather is, alas, all but over, and we are slated to have rain, rain, and more rain for the rest of the week.  Which is fine as long as none of it seeps into the storage room again.  Because I'm not finished cleaning up from the last time.

FIVE:
Tonight the rain began, and we sat under our big golf-size umbrellas and drank hot chocolate and watched football, and it was fun.  Spaz' team lost 34-18, which really stinks because the opponents' final touchdown was during the last 14 seconds of the game.  28-18 just looked so much better.  We were all so ecstatic when the first half ended with us trailing only 14-6.  And the fact that that was cause for celebration seems rather pathetic.

SIX:
I need to go to bed, but my favorite pj's and robe are still out on the clothesline.  Did I mention that it rained tonight?  (Actually, if you read here regularly, you probabnly know already that leaving laundry out hanging in the rain is not uncommon for me.  It's just that it normally doesn't involve my favorite jammies.)

I want to thank you for the much-needed laugh I got with that line "Stop looking at me like that ..." because I WAS staring at the screen, perplexed! I'm still giggling ... thanks!

I know for some people, weather seldom enters their minds, let alone their conversations. But where I live, we talk about the weather all the time. It's an important part of our lives. And this summer, all the talk was, "Did we even HAVE a summer?" Now it's the first of October and I feel cheated. (As if I deserve a summer or something!!)

How fun that you were able to go away for the weekend and do whatever! Plus, you came home to a clean(er) house! How extremely cool! I hope you rewarded your husband nicely for that!

Sorry about your pj's. Bummer.

Always appreciate your comments and enjoy reading your posts. We are in for a week of rain starting tomorrow night. But that's life in Oregon. And Michigan, I guess!

Stay afloat!
Kate

I am so glad you explained that one sentence about being born! The only problem is that I read it at least four times before I moved on to the next sentence where you said you were going to explain. And that's okay. Really. Because when it's 2:30am and I am waiting the requisite extra half hour before giving Tank his breathing treatment (bad asthma day), I really enjoy questioning my sanity-- let alone my reading ability!

No really. It's okay. I reed reeuhl good in homescool.

I don't know why I typed that up there... it seemed fun at the time. But now it's 2:31am and I'm questioning the possible humor behind it.

SO if some rain does seep into the storage area, you can always go away for the weekend in hopes that your uberific hubby will work his cleaning magic.

Goodnight!

the weather is important business. I don't understand why people say talking about weather is small talk. There is not much else that affects everyone as much.

What's to say in comment to this post? My random thoughts, in no particular order:

1) *sigh* I miss the weather. Even the endless rain and humidity (gasp)

2) I really need to get off this thing, get dressed, and haul the kids to the library

3) I wonder if the boy finished putting the recyclables in the truck before he sat down to play with his brother?

4) I miss hanging out my clothes. I *loved* hanging them out; I can close my eyes right now and imagine the crunch of the leaves.

5) I *hate* it when my cozy jammies aren't clean and I *NEED* them.

6) Maybe Bethany should rig a system to remind her of her clothes out on the line. Oh yeah, they've already come up with the WINDOW!! LOL

7) I need to get cracking on cutting out youngest's robe and my nightie.

Well, all that (and probably more) is swirling around in here, and since I am now caught up on your blog posts, I can now refer us both back to #2 and say - buh-bye!! (waving)

Have a lovely day, my friend!!

You're not alone. I leave laundry hanging out in the rain all the time. I enjoyed this post!

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to “light the fires” of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
