Sunday 5 October 2008 - Underwear and Tepid Dogs and Other Football-Related Stuff

At Spaz' football game today...

...I overheard a brief conversation as I was standing in the concession line for the purpose of satisfying my hunger pangs with a dry, overpriced tepid dog (as opposed to a "hot" dog).  The conversation was between a man who had just emerged from the bathrooms with a little boy in tow and a woman whom I assume was his wife and the mother of the child.  The man said, in a voice that did not even attempt to conceal his frustration, "I had to throw his underwear away."  And I, standing a few feet away with my back to the not-so-happy little family, smiled.  Because I have so been there and done that and am exceedingly glad that I am not there anymore.

...I sat in the stands thinking, I am so taking this morning's post down when I get home.  But when I got home I had three nice comments and so decided to leave it up for a couple days as planned.  (Although I bet that in church tomorrow, I will sit there thinking, I am so taking that post down when I get home...)  Anyway, thanks for all of your nice, encouraging comments.

...we parents in the visitors' stands had a few occasions to clap and cheer.  And the parents across from us in the home team stands had almost 3 times as many.  Let's just say Spaz' team was not the one that scored 58 points.  But we did score a season-high 22, and Spaz made a good catch.

...I donned and removed headband, gloves, and extra jacket numerous times, as the temperature couldn't decide whether to be warm or cold.  I also drank home-brewed coffee from a thermos, and never once was it dry or tepid.

No fair talking about ear warmers and gloves. At the two football games I attended...I put sunscreen on twice. And gulped about a gallon of water and still managed to get a little sunburned. Every football season I get more burned in Sep/Oct than all summer.
Ours were not great scorerers, either. Q played some truly awesome D, though. They kept calling his name out on the PA. That was QB on the tackle.
OK, I'll stop. I actually told myself that I was not going to blog about the games.

I am jealous that you even have the option of putting on a jacket!

Dash and Tank had 4 soccer games yesterday-- so we were gone from before 8am and got home around 4:00pm. And I never once put sunscreen on the boys even though it was hot and I was sweating through the back of my shirt. Blech. Oh well, maybe I can convince them to tell everyone that we went on a mini-vacation yesterday and a little sunburn is the price you pay for tropical goodness.

Or not.

Congrats to Spaz on his good catch!

Ha, ha! I've been there, done that and am STILL doing that! I won't even TELL you what Josiah left under my bed today. Argh! We'll just say my nose led the way.

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to “light the fires” of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
