Saturday 14 March 2009 - Brain Teaser For You

It occured to me the other day that, while Spaz' & Fuzz' birthdays are 19 days apart, their half-birthdays are only 16 days apart.

(It has probably occured to you that it takes a very strange person to even notice half-birthdays in the first place, let alone go around thinking about them. I have no argument with you there.)

So my riddle for you is: Given the fact that one of them was born on the 23rd, what are Spaz' & Fuzz' birthdays?

Once you have figured that out, you will doubtless be inclined to point out that there is a slight caveat to that 19-16 rule, so I'll add a bonus question: Considering that Fuzz is now 10, how old was she the first time that the 19-16 rule was temporarily suspended?

I'm not saying you care. Come on, just play along. These really are not difficult questions.

No peeking at other comments before you answer.

Sunday 15 March 2009 - hi there!

Thanks for commenting on the ADD thingie. My younger brother was adhd- or "back then" they just called in hyperactive and he was on Ritalin for 5 years. He is now married, runs his own trucking company with 5 drivers and has 7 kids. He turned out well.

He also told me that he would NEVER put his kids on meds because he remembered what it felt like. Sure, his grades shot up but he said he felt totally disconnected from everyone.

I am having Red "assessed" - not because I care two wits if he IS adhd - I just want to know if he is (and I'm not crazy) or if he's not (and I'm just lazy and crazy). The psychologist who is testing him said that she couldn't give him a dx of that until he is older anyway. But she said we could have a baseline and give me something to work with. I wouldn't take him to just anyway - this happens to be a woman I trust and I know has her own kids.

Another psych I talked to awhile ago (BTW - I do this in my normal line of work - I don't really talk to a lot of psych's in my personal life) - said that kids wouldn't be dx as adhd, etc until they're in school and it's a "problem." I told him that I homeschool. He said "perfect, then it's not a problem." Interesting?

I think I'm just tired a lot.

Regarding my other blog www.oneoldmama.blogspot.com I started it because another friend of mine was on there and it was so much easier. The blog was much easier to set up - so much easier to add things. I like easy. This blog is just too difficult for me to make it look different, etc - add things in the sidebar, etc...

But I like the community of this one. It seems like it should be safer? More monitored? maybe not. It is easier to find other homeschoolers. duh. LOL

But most of my friends are on the other site - I have to remind myself to pop in here to check on people. I do read yours often - sorry I don't comment more often. But on my other blog it is really easy to set it up to follow others and read their blogs. I am following you over there, so when you add something it pops up.

If you do switch - please let me know. I enjoy reading your blog.

I guess my brain is wired a little like yours. Some years back when my dad was alive, I remember noting how I was exactly 500 months old, and he was 1000 months old, and therefore, exactly twice my age!

Yeah, he didn't appreciate the observation much, either.

Have a great week!

She was 2 the first time the 19/16 rule was suspended. She was 6 the second time and it happened again last year. The caveat being Leap Day, when they're 19/17.
but, which one is on the 23rd, and which is older? (no mathematical calculation exists for this)

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to light the fires of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
