Tuesday 17 March 2009 - Brain Dozer, Apparently

Huh. I must admit to being deeply dismayed and direly disappointed at the devastating dearth of discussion regarding my previous post. It really wasn't all that difficult.

Apparently the things my brain comes up with are beyond anyone else's range of comprehension. Or beyond anyone else's range of caring, which is far more likely.

Have I ever mentioned that I knew from the day Cheez was born that she would miss being able to vote in the 2008 Presidential election by eight measly days?

Apparently I have what my cousin calls a "data brain", which is why I can remember the middle names and birthdates of people I barely know and haven't seen for a couple decades, but I can't remember to put my laundry in the dryer. It might also explain why I find it irritating when people equate zip code with jurisdiction and say they live in one town when they in fact live in another, or why it annoys me for parents to say a child is six-and-a-half when he is really six-and-one-third. And don't even get me going on apostrophe abuse. (I know apostrophes aren't technically data. I have an "editor brain" as well.)

Anyway. My apologies for bothering the cyberworld with musings about half-birthdays. I will do my best in future posts to pretend to be normal.

I was shaking my head in disbelief that your brain operates the way it does (I mean, HALF birthdays??) when you tripped over something that makes my brain operate the way it does: APOSTROPHES. Uuuuuuhhhhh... please, don't get me started. And the words loose vs. lose. "I will loose it if I don't hang on to it." Drives me nuts every time. And A LOT. It's TWO words, not one. And semi-colon. It's not for everyone; some people would do well to avoid using it at all.

<breathe> Yep, that's one too. Breath vs. Breathe. You know, I think I could go on all day, but since we have a birthday boy expecting a fun day (which does not include mom on computer all day, darn it), I'd better cut this short and head out. Keep on the look out for errant grammar for me while I'm gone today. lol

Well I have to say this: I didn't get started on your math quizz because I didn't have time. I knew if I started I wouldn't let it go until I finished it! The half-birthday term didn't throw me because my cousin always celebrated his half-birthday.

I would like to say that there are a lot (two words) of things that bother me about grammar, punctuation, correct word usage, etc. But does that set me up for reading my blog more critically? lol

My pet peeves - using "can" and "may" incorrectly. People that always will say "I" even if it is correct to say "me." Example: that belongs to Sally and me. Not:Sally and I.

Okay - now I forgot what your blog was on....

But I did just remember I put a load of clothes in the wash yesterday and probably should put it in the dryer.....

Well, I had JUST turned 18 in time to NOT vote for Bill Clinton the first go-round. I turned 18 on October 31...so I barely squeaked it out.

It's funny, but things like that do stick in my mind too. Maybe I have a little editors brain as well.

I got your message and thank you for all your understanding!

And now the reason I will not solve this puzzle: If I do, I will be forced to look for similar situations in our own birthdates. And that would be too complex for my brain.

Some of us round up.
I'm pretty sanguine about things. So I will round up.. which I'm sure won't make you happy with me....

but you WILL be proud to know that I don't allow the kids to say that they are at the half year mark until they are exactly at the half year mark. :-)

The "Miz" (44):

And the kidz...

"Biz" (Son 22):
Recent college grad, living with friends. Deciding whether to teach English abroad in the fall or buy a house. Enjoys reading, writing, computer & video games, music, hanging with friends, travelling. Occasionally stops by the house for a good meal. :-).
*Homeschooled thru 6th grade, plus 8th grade.*

"Cheez" (Daughter 18+):
Recent high-school grad, working full-time this summer. Hopes to eventually write and travel, perhaps at the same time. Enjoys reading, writing, superfluous vocabulary, and the piano. Definitely her own person.

"Spaz" (Son 13++):
Highly sociable, sensitive, makes friends with anyone. Struggles with ADH issues, but charming & loved by many! Plays rocket football in the fall and watches pro & college ball all winter. *Has always home-schooled.*

"Fuzz" (Daughter 10++):
Artistic, musical, highly creative. Sweet, sensitive, very "on top of things", routine-oriented, stubborn. Great policeman & back-seat driver! Loves piano, reading, drawing, making stuff, creative playing, and anything "Little House". Asks great questions & makes great observations.

What Type of Homeschooler Are You?

Well, here's MY description:
Over 16 years of homeschooling, I've evolved to a less formal, Charlotte Mason-ish eclectic approach with a more-or-less classical bent. (Isn't that clear as mud?) My goal is to light the fires of learning and creativity in my kids. I emphasize history & literature because we enjoy them, and I incorporate informal language arts into much of what we do.

Er, yeah. That's how it's SUPPOSED to go. The reality of it is...
After 16 years of homeschooling, I have yet to really figure out how to do it. So we muddle along, overemphasizing history and almost sort of neglecting science, and I spend way too much time making plans that we don't stick to anyway. We read a lot, and we like words, and we don't manage our time very well, and sometimes I yell.

And here's how quizilla sees it:

Mr. Potato Head:
"You have your ideal of how things should look, but you're flexible enough to allow for change. You are not bothered by changing methods, mid-course if necessary. You use an eclectic combination of curriculum sources."

Um, yeah, that works, for the most part.
