Great Fall giveaway....
Wouldn't you love to win a pencil drawing of one of your loved ones. And that’s what Carrie is giving away. Not this drawing. She wants to draw something for you. Someone, that is. She only does people. So here’s how it will work.
So here’s how it will work.
Leave her a comment, saying you want a groovy pencil drawing of someone you like or even love.
Post a short blurb on your site about this giveaway and spread the word.
Wait anxiously for The Official Day of Fall, which is September 22. She will end the giveaway then and announce a winner that day using a random picker thingy.
If you don’t have a blog, NO WORRIES! Just leave a comment.

On the Day I was Born...

I was tagged by Bubbebobbie. If you haven't visited her blog before I urge you to pay her a visit. You will be truly blessed. All of her posts are encouraging, inspirational, or just plain great reading. I haven't visited my friends blogs lately because of a temporary leave of absence from blogging and a reorganization of my priorities, leaving me with less computer time. However, hers will be one of the first blogs I catch up on when time allows.
The rules of the tag are to go to Wikipedia and type in the day and month of your birth, excluding the year, and hit search. Then you are to list three events, two births, and one holiday that occurred on your birthday.
Because we are studying American history this year, I have chosen events that have to do with the history of our great country.
Events
1860 - The first successful Pony Express run from Saint Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California begins.
1865 - American Civil War: Union forces capture Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Confederate States of America.
1942 - World War II: Japanese forces begin an assault on the United States and Filipino troops on the Bataan Peninsula.
Births
1783 - Washington Irving, American author (d. 1859)
1905 - Robert Frederick Sink, United States Army Officer (d. 1965)

Marriage in the Eyes of a Child....
Another email funny that I wanted to share.
A six-year-old boy told his father he wanted to marry the little girl across the street. The father, being modern and well-schooled in handling children, hid his smile behind his hand.
"That's a serious step," he said. "Have you thought it out completely?"
"Yes," his young son answered. "We can spend one week in my room and the next in hers. It's right across the street, so I can run home if I get scared of the dark."
"How about transportation?" the father asked.
"I have my wagon, and we both have our tricycles," the little boy answered. The boy had an answer to every question the father raised.
Finally, in exasperation, his dad asked, "What about babies? When you're married, you're liable to have babies, you know."
"We've thought about that, too," the little boy replied. "We're not going to have babies. Every time she lays an egg, I'm going to step on it!"

I am Blue ~ Oh so Blue....
I found this quiz on Wadeboys Mom's blog and found it fascinating, as the color really describes me. Not in the sense I thought. Blue to me describes sadness, depression etc. I liked the description given on this quiz.
|
You are most like:
You are Blue |
|

You are cool and soothing, with a hidden spontanious side. You are deeper than most people percieve, and you care a lot for those whom you surround yourself with. |
Take this quiz: Which Crayola Box of 8 Color Are You?

Drum Roll Please...
I just got done notifying everyone of their wins for the Haiku contest and Lo and Behold I get a comment saying I had won the contest that Alligirl was hosting, seeking encouragement for first time homeschoolers. I won a years subscription to the Old Schoolhouse Magazine. So let's have a double drum roll please.
After much deliberation and re-reading of haikus I finally chose the winners. I want to thank everyone for their wonderful entries. I was honored by the number who chose to participate. There were a total of 31 people entering with a total of 38 haiku's written. Bookwormbethy wrote the most haikus. She entered a total of six haikus into the contest. JacqueDixonSoulRestEs assigned this to her family and I got a total of 6 haikus from her family. I was very encouraged. However, I had to choose just one winner per category, accept in the kids category. I found another Adventures in Odyssey CD so I chose two winners in that category. All haikus entered were wonderful and I hope you'll all keep writing.
And now for the winning entries...
Kids
Winter Time (J.S.L. 8)
Snowy, Frosty Ice
Bears hibernate, Birds Migrate
Harsh, Cold resting time.
Snow (Butterfly Age 10)
The snow fell last night
Look at those trees - how sparkly!
Takes my breath away.
Teen
Winter Galaxy (PoorBoyHat)
Dew drops like far stars
A cold galaxy of snow
Waits for life's sweet kiss
Adult
White Winter (ServingtheKingofKings)
Nature Scenes Turn White
Kids and snow...full of wonder
God's Awesome design!

Haiku Contest Update....
I have enough entries now to end my contest. I wanted five in each category and I have at least that in all three. However, I know there are still a few of you out there who haven't had a chance to enter and therefore I am extending the contest until March 7th. Why March 7th, you ask. It is after all the middle of the week. Well, it's a long story but suffice it to say that seven is one of my two favorite numbers, 3 being the other and since March 3rd is this Saturday, I decided to extend it a few days past that. For complete contest details and rules read my Do You Haiku? entry.
Be sure to check out all the neat entries. The first entry in the teen category was titled Frozen Water and was posted by Eyebright at Defective Compositions. The first entry in the adult category was named Long Ago and was posted by Psalm 5:18. The first entry in the kids category was posted by Butterfly10 who is the child of CoMamabear. Next I got entries from Biblekid2; COMamabear; Annointed; Little Eblings Academy; Wade Boys Mom; Serving the King of Kings; Blog boy ~ who insisted his brain is now fried from having to write a haiku, and my very own son ~ who isn't eligible for the prizes by the way, but wanted to get in on the fun Mainekid1 whose haiku is titled Haikus?
Read all the great haikus with titles such as Fruit Smoothies, Winter Morning, Packing, Snow, Finches, Winter, and Texas Winter. I've had a lot of fun reading all of the entries. I really love poetry and want others to love it too. Poetry is a great form of self expression and comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In the future I may run another contest spotlighting a different type of poetry.

Doesn't anyone Haiku?
For complete rules and prizes check out my Do You Haiku? post and don't forget to leave me a comment and a link to your entry. I have three categories for entries, kids, teens, and adults with three fabulous prizes.
Don't Make Me Count to Three is a fabulous audio CD put out by Family Life Today. It is a four part interview series with Ginger Plowman who wrote the book Don't Make Me Count to Three. She is the founder of Preparing the Way Ministries, is an award-winning writer and a popular speaker. She teaches about changing childrens poor behavior by getting to the heart of the matter. It's not enough to change their behavior, if their hearts are not in it.
Kids get a cassette from Adventures in Odyssey Life Lessons. It is a series of three stories about humility. It's hard to be humble when other kids brag about themselves, isn't it? Just stop by Whit's End and let Whit, Connie and the Odyssey gang show you how they keep their egos in check. Stories include Heatwave, Over the Airways, and Family Values.
Last but not least is the $10.00 gift certificate to CBD. This gift certificate will actually include shipping, So you get to use the full $10.00 for whatever you want.
So hurry and get your entries in. This contest won't last forever. I was hoping for at least five entries in each category.

Do You Haiku...
I've decided to host my very own contest. One of our local organizations hosts a haiku contest and I thought it would be fun to introduce to you the Haiku (art of Japanese Poetry). It is a very simple poem to write. It doesn't have to rhyme and it only contains three lines. The first line consists of 5 syllables, the second seven syllables and the third five syllables. Just choose a topic, and describe it in as few syllables as you can.
Rules: 1) post a haiku on your blog and a link to my contest
2) leave me a comment saying you posted your haiku and what age group you
fall in
3) subject ~ anything to do with winter (snow, snowmen, valentines day,
Presidents day etc.)
4) contest ends when I get at least five entries in each age group
There will be a prize for adults and kids.
(adults) ~ get an audio book by Ginger Plowman called "Don't Make Me Count to
Three"
(kids) ~ get an audio cd of Adventures in Odyssey "Life Lessons Volume 2
Humility"
(teens) ~ get a $10.00 gift certificate to CBD
Here's my haiku:
Cabin Fever
Yearning, aching soul
Breathlessly bound up inside
Struggling to be free.

Funky Socks Anyone?
Posted in Just For Fun
What do you think of my new pair of funky socks. I got these in the mail on Friday and was so excited. Back in December my mom sent me a letter with a request to participate in a funky sock exchange. All I had to do was send a pair of funky socks to the first person on the list, and mail the letter out to six of my friends changing the first name to the person who sent the letter to me, my mom, and putting my name and address in the second spot. So, technically, if it works, I should receive in the mail 36 pairs of "funky" socks for the price of the one I mailed out.
I mailed the letter and not everyone I mailed it to was able to participate for various reasons. So, I'm asking if there's anyone out there who wants to join the fun and see what kind of funky socks you might receive and from where they come. My pair came from Washington state, which, ironically, is where I had to send the pair I bought.
Any takers. If interested send me your email address and I'll email you the funky sock letter so you can participate too. All you have to do is buy one pair of funky socks, send it to my mom, and send your letter to six friends and convince them to join the fun.

How is your Grammar?

On The Day You Were Born...
Have you ever wondered what the number one hit was on the day you were born. Well I just found a neat link that you can click on (This Day in Music) , type in your birth date, and find out what the number one hit was for your birthday. For me it was Stop! In the Name of Love, by the Supremes. My husbands was Autumn Leaves by Roger Williams. But the song that got to me the most was the song that was most popular on my son's birthday. One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey.
Sorry I never told you All I wanted to say And now it's too late to hold you 'Cause you've flown away So far away
Never had I imagined Living without your smile Feeling and knowing you hear me It keeps me alive Alive
[Chorus:] And I know you're shining down on me from heaven Like so many friends we've lost along the way And I know eventually we'll be together One sweet day
Darling I never showed you Assumed you'd always be there I took your presence for granted But I always cared And I miss the love we shared
[Chorus]
Although the sun will never shine the same again I'll always look to a brighter day Lord I know when I lay me down to sleep You will always listen as I pray
[Chorus]
Sorry I never told you All I wanted to say
It just made me think of all the things we take for granted everyday, but more importantly the people we take for granted every day. Don't we take the people closest to us for granted, forgetting to say good-night or good morning. Perhaps saying something harsh, not really meaning it, but also not knowing if it might be the very last thing we got to say to them. Let's be careful how we express ourselves to our families. Let's not forget that good-night hug. Make sure that the temporary good-byes we say to each other every day are pleasant partings that they will remember with fondness, just in case it is the last time they see us.
On the other hand, let's also not put off spending time together, thinking we can do that together tomorrow. Last winter I went to a tea party hosted by a very dear friend from our church. She was using the special China her mother had bought many years and placed in her hope chest, dreaming of the day she could display it in a hutch in her own dining room. It's a long story, but for many reasons her mother never got to display the China and she unwrapped it and used it for the very first time at this tea party. Let's not put time in a box like that china, waiting for tomorrow to be used and enjoyed. Let's enjoy our lives with our families today, while we still have our health and let's never forget to say I love you. Now is the time to teach, now is the time to share, now is the time to enjoy these precious little ones that God has gifted us with.

I went to Colby-Sawyer and I saw...
One of the things the kids and I like to do on long car rides is to play a game we call I went to ______ and I saw.... It is a great way to teach them descriptive writing, phonetic awareness, vocabulary, use of adjectives and adverbs, memory skills etc. The point is to choose something for each letter of the alphabet that you might have seen depending on your choice of destination; i.e. beach, doctors office, zoo, etc. On your turn you have to list, in order, everything that was already said plus a new item starting with the next letter in the alphabet. It can be played together by kids of all ages and abilities. Today we had a 4-1/2 hour drive to take my oldest son to college so ds10 and I decided to play the game. Here is how it went...
I went to Colby- Sawyer and I saw....
An Absolutely Amazing Academic Arena Big Basement Carefree Child Called Colby Dumb Dog Ducking Exceptionally Energetic Educational Establishment Frenzy of Frantic Freshman Griefstricken Guardians Going Humongous Hall Important Institutional Itinerary Justifiable Jitters Kindred Kids Kindling Kinship Large Lavish Library Many Moms Mingling Nosy Newsreporters Notetaking Openly Ostensible Oracles Present Professors Practicing Penmanship Quickening Qualms Quickly Quieted....
Unfortunately that's as far as we were able to get. If anyone would like to add their descriptions for the rest of the letters we'd love to hear them.
