Star Wars and the Bible

My son is 7 and loves the Star Wars movies. The other day we were doing our Bible lesson and the kids were not listening. I told them when they didn't obey their parents they were disobeying God too and that they needed to listen to God not the Devil. Aaron then says something about Anikin and why did he go to the dark side. I'm thinking, Great! you really aren't listening!! But he was, he did have a reason for asking. So we talked about the movies and that the Dark side is like listening to Satan - it's all about pride, power and SELF. And how listening and obeying God is like using the Force. We talked at length about it and even though he's only 7 and mostly likes the movies for the light saber battles, he did learn a little more that day. Praise God.

Now when they kids are acting up I ask them who are they listening to? They know and confess (but still continue!) but at least they are becoming more aware of their heart motives. Now, being a mom who's grown up in the time of pop psychology, I wonder am I giving them too much guilt?!

Nah, you are doing the right thing. I think far too many of our young men (and ladies) do not acknowledge their heart motives, or even understand them. We live in the "feel good" era, a bit of shame over our sinful hearts is a good thing. We SHOULD be ashamed of acting in opposition to Gods will and law by disobeying our authority or not being loving towards our neighbor (or brother!) Don't let the enemy distract you from training your kids with his psychobabble, and btw, we also use Star Wars anagolies at our testosterone filled home!
Have a Great Easter,
Jes

Star Wars Lover

My 13 year old son is heavy into Star Wars. He and his friends have light saber battles daily in the front yard! I might possibly use that as well!

You left a comment on my blog the daily dose. I just wanted to let you know that I closed that one and will continue to post on my old blog for such a time as this!

Thanks!
Jennifer

Star Wars and the Bible ...

I was reading about your Homeschool adventures,
(congrats on being featured blogger BTW) when this caught my eye in your archives! We have these conversations periodically too - I am glad we are not alone!

I think my kids get a good grasp on character traits from seeing what happens to a person ... either in video stories or in books. That is one reason we are choosey about what our kids watch and read.

Enjoyed getting to know your family through your blog! God Bless your new school year - MeritK
