JESUS

As I sat eating dinner the other night I was looking at our Jesus Names project on the wall

some of the strings are beginning to sag and I was thinking I should really take it down but then a thought came over me... I'm going to take down all the names just leaving the green Jesus in the center then cut out heart shapes and write out bible verses about love on each one (writing the word "love" in red) and then attach all of those to the wall with red strings!

now as I said I'll be cutting these into hearts and probably mounting them and they will be written by my oldest who is always in need of a handwriting lesson lol!

Here are the verses (when I searched I keep up with over 600!!!)

  • Matthew 22:37
  • Matthew 5:44
  • Matthew 22:39
  • John 13:34
  • Romans 12:9
  • Romans 12:10
  • 1Corinthians 8:3
  • 1 Corinthians 13:4
  • 1 Corinthians 13:13
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14
  • Ephesians 5:2
  • Ephesians 6:24
  • 1 Timothy 1:14

we will do them in random order and then on Valentine's Day we will add JOHN 3:16... last but certainly most important and it will lead us nicely into Lent! I will post pics as we get going.

THE DESK APPRENTICE

So last year about this time Staples had a sale on the DA I scooped one up, as we were preparing to move it was great I went through all my stuff and packed the DA full of just the things that we needed to school for a couple of months... but since then it's been lonely and empty and instead of things being stored in it, it became a place to set things... here it is empty

on the back side there are the same "pockets" as this side and all four corners have pencil cups

here's looking down on it... it's huge... and it spins  and as we are going through moving the school room I have dug it out again and decided I'm using it for good... it makes a lot of since instead of tearing the house apart looking for our FIAR story or a math book or dry erase marker or through piles thinking I know I printed off some worksheets around here somewhere they will all have a home now!  AND thanks to an idea from a FIAR mom (sorry I forgot who) I will be using the label maker to label the "pockets"

on the left there are Trevor's HOP books the manual and the book he's working on, behind that is his math book and in the pencil cup are his flashcards... the right has two Valentine idea books that need to be pursued

Here's Ry's side there is a book on Baden Powell, his grammar notebook, math book, spelling list is tucked on there somewhere... the cup for the dry erase markers... the side that is empty will have the preschool workbooks for Tyler and Caly

in the middle there is the FIAR manual were using right now and the FIAR story, my planner, the sliding cup thing is empty I'm not sure that I'll put anything in there but It's nice to keep my books up and the files together... the files 1 for all lapbook stuff done or not I may separate them but for now I know their in there, 1 for preschool worksheets that are a must because Caly constantly askes to do school and wants what the boys have, 1 for anything I print for Riley and another for anything I print for Trevor, there's a couple extra in the back just in case I think of soemthing! And there you have it probably more than you wanted to know lol!

It's What's For Dinner

So I love meatloaf... always have, my mom hates its and the only time I would get it was when my grandparents lived with us and then after they moved down the street, Grandma would call when she was making it and I would walk down to their house for dinner... last night I made my usual meatloaf and just spread a thin layer of potatoes on top and decorated it to look like a snowman (it was an idea in the FIAR archives) the kids ate it pretty well Ry still held his nose but the others ate it up!

I cut out 180 mittens for my before FIAR class yesterday... I decided to make a file folder game or activity bag for each family in the class, each week... these mittens will be glued to a file folder and then an envelope with mittens will be sent home to work on color matching... at the end of the semester I will see if anyone wants to do a swap

I forgot to mention

we drove by the garage that burnt the other day (see my post further down) and the kids were all talking about it and Trevor says... wow the garage is gone and that's where all the best stuff is kept, like the hola hoops... ok sometimes I worry about that little guy lol... but it did give a nice chance to review about never going back into a fire for ANYTHING!

The School Room

Ahh yes you remember those pictures, the big beautiful windows, and the large white book case oh and the yellow paint that just about matches this color... well it's no more... we have decided to move the school room downstairs... we'll have more space for things like my great-great grandmother's table and the 2 four drawer filing cabinets my dh brought home from work... I know it will be great when it's done but for now I will still miss the windows!

This wasn't really what I wanted to make but it'll do for now or until I come up with something else lol!  This game is for Trevor to work on his beginning blends, I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before or not but I really don't know how Riley learned to read??? he just did... now Trevor isn't really having any problems but he needs a little more help than Riley did.   So I went through his book and made a list of all the endings and what beginning blends went with them and from there I just used the ones with the most beginning blends, I took 3x5 cards cut them in half used a juice top to make the circle and since basketball is Trevor's favorite I turned them into basketballs just adding the endings in the middles... then I took more 3x5 cards and cut them into fourths and wrote the blends on one end... used packing tape to tape it to the file folder and then I just paperclipped the blends all around!  OH and if you have any ideas or know of any websites that have phonics games to make lmk!

Tyler's First Tooth

Tyler lost his first tooth.... in about 20 minutes lol... We had left the house to head into town when he said his tooth was wiggling, oh ok honey... no big deal my kids are wishful thinkers all the time thinking that one is loose and it isn't, and even if it was loose I didn't think it was really loose... about 5 minutes later the kids start screaming he's bleeding he's bleeding... so I told them we were almost to Mc D's we'd pull in and get some napkins... Oh and btw I don't do well with teeth, I don't know why but they creep me out, I can handle blood and cuts and Caly hda an IV in her head that was supposed to be one of the worst things to see in the NICU and that didn't bother me, but teeth look out, so I'm feeling a bit woozie... by the time we get to Mc D's it's stopped but no one had said that so I pulled in anyways only to have to get back out of there... we kept traveling without getting any napkins and finally got to my friend's house to drop off Riley... Tyler wanted to come and show everyone his tooth which by this time was turned sideways and laying down... my friend's son got him a tissue and about 30 seconds later Tyler plucked it right out!!!!

It's very tiny

After we left my friends house Tyler was sitting in his seat and he sighed and said I love you Mom... he's so trilled to be like the big boys!

Scouts

So my son is in Webelos and we're working on the Scientist  We've talked about Bernoulli and Pascal I think were going to start a Scientist notebook and just keeping adding to it all the scientists we come across... we also had Riley used Pascal's law to left the truck

Here he is trying to lift it without the help of Pascal!  Just look at that face!!!

Now he's lifting it with the jack which was still a little hard for this 50lbs only when he's soaking wet child! But he did it!

The Rest of the Week!

Wendesday went pretty well as did Thursday... Riley missed 7 out of 12 on his spelling test... and the kids lost interest in Katy but we pushed through and got it finished... here's some pics

Making and eating traffic light crackers (yes for some reason my kids thought it was hot???)

Working on directions... I made the grid with string on the basement floor and then the boys used the compass and marked N E S W on the walls then we played a directions game

OH don't mind the red paint in the top part of the pic that was from the previous owners!

Tuesday's work

I felt like were missing something yesterday definetly wasn't like Monday... Trevor cried over his math, he did the math fine with me but then he wanted a good old sheet of addition and instead of asking he went up stairs to cry... Riley asked for his math early so he could "get it done and over with" 3 digit multiplication isn't his favorite.... the rest of the day went pretty well but I really need to get some pages together for Caly she constantly askes to do school.

I can't wait to see what today brings!

Hey I think this FIAR stuff works on moms too!

Yes 2 posts down as I was talking about our first day back I mention that we were working on math that day for Five In A Row and I couldn't find where it said 55 horse power and the speeds (this was first time reading this book) then Tuesday when we went to start our lesson I decided that we would listen to it on tape (I happen to find the book and tape *new* at the library sale for .25) we open to the first page and there it is in the border... the whole description tucked into the border, I stopped the tape right there and pointed it out and then we when on to listen to the rest of the story while we slurpped our smoothies!

So I now see why Jane says not to let your child read the story... they just might miss something!

Post 100 WooHoo!

It took me long enough but I made it to 100... just as I was thinking on changing blogs... you wouldn't believe how easy it is to add things over at blogger... things I've been trying to do here for months I did on blogger in about 30 seconds... without any help!!!!

First Day Back in '08

Yesterday was fantastic!!!  I only wish that everyday was going to be like it but I know we WILL have melt downs and fits, and I don't want tos, but for now here's what we did on our *fantastic day*...

Riley:

  • multiplication review
  • noun review and made a page for his new notebook (more on that when we have a few more entries)
  • spelling review of all the "hard" words from last semester
  • reading for scouts on Bernoulli and Pascal gave examples of each and *talked about making a paper mache airplane wing* and worked on the Scout Oath

Trevor

  • addition review and matching numbers to the number word cards
  • HOP review

Tyler and Calyse

  • read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom (we decided to make a tree)
  • played roll the dice and sang 10 little indians
  • matched foamie letters to a letter sheet

Everyone

  • Stencil Penmanship this is an idea I took from Montessori and if anyone who actually does M read this they would have a fit lol... we used shape stencils to make a shape on a paper then used colored pencils to draw horizontal lines within the shape, the lines needed to be as straight and as close together as possible both the older boys did great and both Tyler and Caly just ended up coloring in theirs
  • Katy and the Big Snow- yes I know the snow in Michigan is gone but were pressing on.. we went over the vocab words and did a lot of counting (they started that on their own) talked about counting by 5s the only problem is that I didn't see where it said that in the book I went over and over it and I don't know if were missing a page or what but no where did it talk about 55 horse power or the gears??? then I had Riley figure out how old the book was
  • talked more about Mr. Gallon and what water was in the 3 states of matter

and that's about it I feel good for a first day back and I know it was a lot of review but it's nice to start gently!

A Game!

So here's a great game expecially if you have lots of kids of all ages... wow how often do you find that!  First let me back up I was reading over on the FIAR boards and one of the moms there was talking about a game she made (I believe she got the idea from a book) it was a race car game  that had as many starts and finishes as players (6 kids then 6 starts and 6 finishes) and it is played like this each kid has their own set of cards reviewing the math facts that they are working on, they each pick a start and the first person figures their first math problem and then goes that many spaces then the next and at any time someone lands on a finish space they win!

I decided to make some changes :) I can't help it I always have to make some kind of change! I thought the boys would love the car theme but the first time we played (the game at that time was just the spaces mapped out in pencil but they couldn't wait any longer to play!) the first thing I found for counters was a bag of rubber frogs... doesn't everybody have rubber frogs layin' around??? so we used those and that's when we decided that a swamp them would be really fun (btw it would have been more irregular if I would have thought of the swamp to begin with and since I had it all mapped out  and that ws the hard part I wasn't starting over!) I also decided that we didn't  need more than one start but I did keep the 4 finishes from there I added some other fun things...

Log Bridge

Turtle Crossing go back 2 spaces

Stepping stones and slither ahead 2 spaces!

So I still have to make cards Riley multiplication and division, Trevor addition and subtraction and Tyler and Calyse will have cards with dots to count and then move that many spaces-oh and I colored the spaces in groups of 5 so if Riley had 5x7 he wouldn't have to count out 35 (or whatever number) spaces he could count by 5's to make it quicker! (right now we are just using dice the older boys roll two dice together and x or + and the littles roll one and go that many)

I also thought we could use this game for spelling I'd say the word and they would spell it if they got it right they could as many spaces as there are letters in that word

Leave a comment if you need more info!
