This is Us!

I know this isn't anything new....

Last night as we were eating our chicken nuggets and fries Riley was looking at the ketchup bottle and asked how many ounces are in a gallon (because he wanted to know if our large bottle of ketchup was a gallon of ketchup) so we talked about ounces and gallons and then I thought of Mr. Gallon... So today we made Mr Gallon isn't he cute

he has all the abbreviations on him and 4 quarts = 1 gallon, 2 pints = 1 quart so 8 pints = 1 gallon and so on.  Then there's also 8 ounces in a cup and 128 ounces in a gallon.

I can't decide whether or not to label everything??? And I was planning oon hanging him either in the kitchen or the school room but Caly insisted he go right next to Jesus lol

as we put him together we also talked about the 3 states of matter and our bones and how they relate to the "limbes" on Mr Gallon

Decluttering

So on the Five In A Row message board I have been participating in the decluttrering thread... there has been one area I have been avoiding and that's the art cabinet but it's done and I've decided that I'm going to try and just use what I have (the same with my sewing crafts) so I can use up some of this stuff... here are the pics sorry no before pics today you could hardly open it so just trust me it was bad!

this is the top there glue, glitter, beads, and other dodads... second shelf has play doh and envelopes, 3x5 cards and ziplocks

top left we have lapbboking supplies, top right construction paper and folders plus a box of pads of paper and packs of lined paper... second shelf left side is painting supplies, right side is math manipulatives

bottom left is stencils and LA manipulatives

I will still do some more rearranging because there are 2 paper boxes 1 with general art supplies paper plates, cotton balls etc and the other has science kits, art kits and history kits.... but for now this will have to do!

What I got for Christmas

My dh and I don't really do much for each other at Christmas actually some years we haven't done anything at all... this year we just pick out something small to put in our stockings... him a firefighter hat and me some sewing notions... but here are some of the gifts I/we recieved for Christmas

from my dear friend a book about Christmas decorating and some beautiful file folders (she knows just what I like ;)

from my inlaws a Kohl's gift card and new garage door openers yes!

from my parents flannel sheets (we never had a use for these in the apartment) knobs for my kitchen cabinets and best of all MAMMOTH CROCS (Mike keeps asking me if that means my feet are big) I never expected these I actually told her I wanted an ironing board lol but these crocs are the best!

I think we had a pretty good Christmas even if the kids do think it's wierd we got garage door openers for Christmas!

It's time I got back to this blog!

Here's what's been happenin'... Mike gets a paid Christmas vacation so he's been home for 11 long days!  He got 2 fire runs the first one was for a EMT lift assist and the second was 2 old ladies that called about a dog in a pond... he was very exicited, even though the lift assist was in the middle of the night and the dog was on Christmas Eve morning (while I was cooking for his family and he was on potato peeling duty)

Here's Caly apparently the dog needs a bath lol!

Here's what I did with that scrap of fabric from a few posts back... a really simple skirt and I used the boys plain black ties just added the trees or Indian arrow heads as Mike like to call them!

This picture didn't turn out great but it was the best one we got... any tips for getting kids to behave when taking pictures would be helpful

Here are some diapers I made for Caly's baby, I just used scraps of fleece and added cute buttons from my jar, I was afraid to made too many diapers and outfits because I knew my aunt was giving her a new baby for Christmas and I didn't want her to dump her old baby with all the new clothes I made for her for Christmas, but it turns out both babies are about the same size!

Here's her "old" baby with the diaper on this baby is named Caly... kinda like how George Foreman named all his kids George all her babies are named Caly lol!

Tyler and Caly curled up watching a movie

I made these for Caly for stocking stuffers... again just scraps and buttons from my jar!

Here are our New Years bags... not too many this year I was trying to finish a couple of jobs that day so we just had a couple of night time bags

7pm make party hats and each kid did a number of 2008 using glitter... yes glitter rarely comes out at this house

8pm movie

no 9pm because the movie was still on

10pm (as tradition) make your own sundaes

11pm UNO

11:55 party blowers... 2 reasons 1 they don't last very long before falling apart and 2 I don't last very long before falling apart with all the noise!

Here they are in all their glitter glory!

hey and that messy closet of scout and co-op stuff got cleaned up now we have this and this...

Well that's about all... oh yeah and Caly lit her hair on fire... yes over the Advent wreath I was reading the story and told her to sit back she was getting too close and she took a clump of her and stuck it in the flame so I had to cut a chunk of hair out... ugh but I'm sure she won't do that again and since the boys were right there hopefully they won't either!

Add this to the "to do' list!

Not every year but some years I (and sometimes the kids and I) make photo ornaments,  I'd like to make new ones this year but I'm out of ideas... take a look at what we've done in the past

These are both very simple the tree is just 2 pieces of craft foam with the picture sandwiched in between, and Riley made the popsicle stick one.

This one isn't an ornament (it has a stand in the back) but you could add a loop to put it on your tree

Now this one is ok but didn't turn out the way it was supposed to... you were to print your pic on computer paper, put the glue on the inside of the ball, roll up the pic and flatten it in the glue, then fill the ball with tinsle... well everytime I tried the ink from the pic would smear and so I just used some of the extra wallet sized pics and rolled them upjust enought to get them in the ball and then filled the back with tinsle

so do YOU have any new ideas for me????

P.S. I actually need 2 different ones this year!

School????

I've been posting on so many other things and not much about school lately... well this week we're supposed to be off but I think we will continue very lightly with a few things that is as long as I keep up with my to do list lol... and I'm already eager to get started in January, the fall is always so busy I've often thought about starting our year in January.

What we hope to accomplish this week...

  • a few craft projects
  • a couple pages of math for Riley and Trevor
  • some reading for scouts (Riley)
  • more Christmas books
  • review of Trevor's reading
  • Jesus names unit
  • finish the Christmas lapbook
  • finish our Advent study

that sounds like plenty for the week before Christmas

Here's my to do list...

  • finish the snowman gifts
  • paint the backsplash in the kitchen
  • go shopping with my dad
  • make Caly's skirt and the boy's ties
  • make chocolates
  • sugar cookies
  • try the new peppermint bar recipe from FIAR
  • peanutbutter kiss cookies
  • no bakes
  • German chocolate coconut bars
  • finish shopping
  • wrapping
  • make the kids pjs
  • make doll clothes for Caly
  • make Tj's locks and latches board
  • clean and cook for the in laws!!!!!

so wow that looks like a lot but I have it all down on paper what to do which day and if I stick to that it won't be so bad!!!

Fireman

Well he got his pager and equipment over the weekend and they staged a mock ice rescue... and yes that means Mike got to put on the dry suit and go into the water to be saved and then to be the rescuer... he was very excited... plus just the other day I taught him how the scouts do a water rescue ya know hand over hand pulling the rope and he tried it and thought it worked really well!

Ta Da!

Well here's the apron only 1 person said to keep the top and bottom the same...

and flip it over...

I have to give credit to Meg at  http://www.montessoribyhand.blogspot.com/ for it was her apron that inspired me... she will actually have the pattern for her's up in January so stay tuned!

Apron

This first pic is just so you can see the snowman print

Here's both sides if they were to match, the waist, ties and trim around the top will be in plain cream

I haven't gotten this top gathered yet

here's the reverse side

or I can switch the tops

or this

so what do you think... matching top and bottom or switch them????

All this cleaning and decluttering

meant I had to deal with a problem... well ok maybe 2 problems 1 yes we have too much stuff and even if we hae room for it doesn't mean we need it and 2 what am I going to do with all this scout and co-op stuff (there really isn't a lot of co-op stuff but I like it all together in it's own spot) so I started looking around I didn't want either of those things in the schoolroom, my craft closet is full and it's MINE lol, the game closet is full I didn't want it in the basement or upstairs because I work on it early in the morning and I don't want to have to walk up and down the stairs 10 times, so finally the front closet catches my eye, see we come in the back door so the only time we put coats or anything in there is when there's company... so there sits a nice big closet empty, I don't think I could have gotten those boxes in ther any faster lol!

Now it is on my after Christmas to do list (yes I actually have one of those) to organize all of this but for now it's out of sight and I can live with that!

The Game Closet

Here was my other little project yesterday... getting all the shelves put up in the game closet

From this...

To this..

yes that is an empty shelf... there are still 2 boxes in the schoolroom that will go up there

The picture above this one shows all the boxes of rotated toys

Now this side is still a pile but I'm behind on getting the puzzles in bags, yes I take the puzzles write a number on the the back of each piece like the 100 piece Spiderman puzzle all the pieces have the number 3 on them, then the ziplock bag gets a number 3 and I cut the picture off the box and use packing tape to tape it to the ziplock,  then I'll need to get a bin to hold them.

What Happened???

Well I've been working along with the FIAR Ladies on clearing out my clutter... mostly in the basement and attic but as I came across things that needed to go in the kids palyroom closet and other little things I was putting them in the schoolroom... and then the kids found out that they were there and then I dumped more in there and then this is what you get...

So there it is Girls I told you it was bad!!!  You could hardly walk in there games dumped, papers all over, boxes of scout stuff and co-op stuff... just a mess, but here it is an hour later

(those boxes will be either in the playroom closet or the white cabinet)

I can breathe again!

What's left of it

Yes this is what the kids think is left of the PS2... I kept telling them that something was going to happen if they didn't change their attitude when they play.  It's constant screaming and yelling and fighting the whole time it is on so I almost never let them play and when I do I regret it before the thing is even turned on... so the other night I wasn't home Mike was and he lets them play and they got fighting so he unplugged it and took it to the garage and brought back in 4 pieces of black plastic (one of each of them) and set them on the entertainment center where the PS2 was... yes there was a little crying from Riley but by the time I got home they were all fine no one even mentioned it till Riley said something and then what he said was that it was ok because he bet the knex (that we bought at a garage sale but haven't gotten out yet) were more fun than the PS2.  So now I'm like lets sell that PS2 and all the games, 4 cordless remotes, the tap everything but Mike said he guessed so, he doesn't play the thing and the kids still think it's gone so let's get rid of it!!!

Reading

So Trevor started HOP level 2 this week and it start with some beginning blends SH, TH, WH, and CH Monday he did pretty good, Tuesday was one of those pull your hair out kind of days where we went over it and over it and over it and by the end we were both fustrated... so Wednesday comes and we decide not to work on any of the blends just do review while I try to come up with a plan!  Thursday I still didn't have a plan so I ended up sitting down and doing the same thing that we did on Tuesday only instead of using HOP's blend cards I just wrote the blends on 3x5 cards and then I went through the book and called out a word and had him pick the correct blend... he got them all right... I don't know if he needed an extra day to process the new info or if Tuesday was just a bad day but I'll definetly remember that in the future!

Just in case your wondering we did not have these for breakfast but we did have them BEFORE lunch and the kids are still in their pjs because they were having their picture taken later last night and needed a bath in the afternoon :)

AND this was lunch... I surprised them with M&Ms in their snadwhich!

We also made this paper Christmas tree... we do it every year... we still need to make stars for it... maybe next week
