Memorization

"Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee."

~ Psalm 119:11.

"All children have it in them to recite; it is an imprisoned gift waiting to be delivered...out of the woodenness of even the most commonplace child steps forth the child-artist, a delicate spirit, who shall make you laugh and make you weep."

~ Charlotte Mason in Home Education, p.223.

"I hope that my readers will train their children in the art of recitation; in the coming days, more even than in our own will it behove every educated man and woman to be able to speak effectively in public; and, in learning to recite you learn to speak."

~ p.224

(Oh, I must read Charlotte Mason's full volumes!  They are available online here.)

I know the benefits of memorization.  As children, my father used to have us memorize Psalms, Proverbs, catechisms & creeds.  I have retained most of these, and at times in the past, we have also had our children memorize them.  For the past few months we have been going through Starr Meade's Training Hearts, Teaching Minds.  This is a family devotional book based on the Shorter (Westminster) Catechism.  Each week a new question & answer from the catechism is introduced, with short devotionals to read each day.  We have required our girls to memorize each one.  Even 3 year old Ruby has memorized some of them.

Along with this catechism memorization, I have decided to have the girls memorize other things from different subject areas as well.  Inspired in part by Kendra Fletcher's Circle Time over at Preschoolers & Peace, I have typed up a few passages & lists that will be included in our daily memorization times.

This is what we are currently working on:

 Catechism: Q & A 13 - Westminster Shorter Catechism

Did our first parents remain as they were created?

Left to the freedom of their own wills, our first parents sinned against God and fell from their original condition.

The Helping Verbs & State of Being Verbs - required in First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind Level 4.  These were quite easy to learn once we turned them into a bit of a chant.

Am, is, are, was, were,

Be, being, been,

Have, has had, do, does, did,

Shall, will, should, would, may, might, must,

Can, could.

(Those in bold are state of being verbs, those in the entire list are helping verbs).

Common Prepositions (also required for FLL4)

Aboard, about, above, across.

After, against, along, among, around, at.

Before, behind, below, beneath.

Beside, between, beyond, by.

Down, during, except, for, from.

In, inside, into, like.

Near, of, off, on, over.

Past, since, through, throughout.

To, toward, under, underneath.

Until, up, upon.

With, within, without.

(This will be a great help when trying to find those prepositional sentence openers for our IEW paragraphs!)

The 3 times table

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, Who art in Heaven,

Hallowed by Thy Name.

Thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

Forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Thine is the Kingdom, the power and the glory,

Forever and ever,

Amen.

My plan is to also add a poem and scripture to the current list.

Who Am I?

Recently we have started reading a chapter fromThe Gift of Values by Rosie Boom on Sunday evenings.  Last night's chapter was on the value of A Positive Attitude.  Rosie had included this poem, which I thought was perfect for this week's Charlotte Mason blog carnival on Habit!  I don't know who the author is and Rosie doesn't quote anyone either, so I'm assuming it's in the public domain!

Who Am I?

I am your constant companion.

I am your greatest helper or your heaviest burden.

I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.

I am completely at your command.

Half the things you do, you might just as well turn over to me,

And I will be able to do them quickly and correctly.

I am easily managed; you must merely be firm with me.

Show me exactly how you want something done,

And after a few lessons I will do it automatically.

I am the servant of all great men.

And, alas, of all failures as well.

Those who are great, I have made great.

Those who are failures, I have made failures.

I am not a machine, though I work with all the precision of a machine.

You may run me for profit, or run me for ruin;

It makes no difference to me.

Take me, train me, be firm with me

And I will put the world at your feet.

Be easy with me, and I will destroy you.

Who am I?

I am HABIT!

Lessons with Bethany

The girls have finished their work for the morning and now Bethany is teaching "Key Word Outlines" with the younger girls!  We are going through Andrew Pudewa's course called Student Writing Intensive.  Those of you who are familiar with this course will know what a key word outline is.

Ainsley (5 1/2) isn't doing the course with us, but is listening intently to Bethany's instruction!

Beth is now copying the part in the DVD where Andrew Pudewa is getting the students to brainstorm for quality adjectives to describe a pen.  I think the one they mentioned here was "nasty pen!"

They are now writing up their draft for a picture book called "Miss Mouse's Birthday."

For more information on the writing course see the website for the Institute for Excellence in Writing.  I highly recommend the course!

Update on what we are doing this year

I thought it was time for an update on our schooling, as a few things have changed.

Here is what each of the girls is doing:

Ainsley (5 1/2):  Adventures in Phonics Level A, A Beka Math 1, copywork & a reader a day.

Emily (8):  First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind Level 3, A Beka Math 3, copywork

Bethany (9 1/2): A Beka Language B, Saxon Math 54, copywork

We are also doing IEW's Student Writing Intensive Level A, Story of the World 2: The Middle Ages and Considering God's Creation, altogether.

Current read aloud is Prince Caspian, having just finished The Horse & His Boy.

For family devotions we are going through the Greenleaf Guide to Old Testament History.

Whiteboard Magic

Today the inevitable happened.  The girls were playing "hangman" on the whiteboard.  Our markers are all used up, so one daughter decided to use a sharpie pen (permanent marker).  Oh no!  My expensive whiteboard is ruined!  Never fear, I did a quick internet search and came up with this easy tip for removing permanent marker from the whiteboard.  You simply write over the permanent marker with a whiteboard marker and then wipe both clean off! I was soooo relieved.

What we are doing this year

I thought I would write a short post on what we are doing for schooling this year.

The girls all start the day with copywork, usually a Bible verse/passage, a poem or hymn.

Bethany & Emily (9 & nearly 8) are both working through ABeka Math 3.  I plan for them to follow on with Saxon Math 5/4.

Bethany is working through ABeka Language B, and Emily is working on English for the Thoughtful Child 2.

Ainsley (my 5 year old)  is on ABeka Math 1 and Adventure in Phonics Level A (by Christian Liberty Press).  We are also working on teaching her to read, but finding readers I am 100% happy with is not easy!  I borrowed the Sing, Spell, Read & Write readers for the other girls, but can't get hold of them this time.

Once a week, we get together with another family to do Story of the World Volume 2 (The Middle Ages) and on alternative weeks we do Considering God's Creation.  We find that getting together with another family ensures these subjects get done, it also makes it a lot more fun ;-).  Instead of just putting the activity pages into folders, we have been cutting & pasting into visual diaries.  This makes their books a lot more "scrapbook like" and means each one is different.  They often add their own narrations or illustrations and photos of crafts we have done.

I have also started doing a lesson a week of Barry Stebbing's Lambs Book of Art.  We have dabbled in watercolour, acrylic & pastel paintings in the past year and plan to do more of this.  We are looking forward to another drawing workshop with Graham Braddock in May.

Last year I did a course called Teaching Writing, Structure & Style by Andrew Pudewa, from the Institute for Excellence in Writing.  Andrew is coming to New Zealand to take some conferences in February, so I am looking forward to that.  Ideally, I would like to go through his course with the girls this year too.

Eeuwe takes our family devotions each night after dinner.  We are going through Our 24 Family Ways by Clay Sally Clarkson.

Eeuwe also does the daily read-aloud each night after devotions.  At the moment they are reading Across the Great Divide by Simon James.

We have a piano again, so I am hoping to buy some books for the girls and start to teach them.  They have taught themselves a few notes already.  Piano lessons are not really on the budget at the moment, but I have had lessons up to Grade 7 level, so I will make do for now!

I have added some of our NZ homeschool suppliers to my links on the side bar.  Christian Education Services sell ABeka books and Saxon Math as well as most of Clay & Sally Clarkson's books.  Learnex sell Story of the World, Considering God's Creation, Lamb's Book of Art and Graham Braddock's How to Draw cards.  Geneva books sell Christian Liberty Press books along with many others.

Jim Weiss

Last Monday we had the privilege of hearing Jim Weiss telling his wonderful stories LIVE here in New Zealand!  He is well worth listening to if you ever get the opportunity.  If you don't, you can always visit his website, www.greathall.com to order his CDs.  We bought the Animal Stories CD, the girls love his animal voices, especially the sloooooow tortoise and the very fast hare!  I also went to his professional development session.  This was great fun and Jim gave lots of tips for planning a story reading including how to put on voices.
