Happy Birthday to A Peaceful Day

Posted in Living Books

My blog-friend Jeanne, is celebrating the first birthday of her wonderful blog, A Peaceful Day.

Jeanne's blog is a wonderful source of Charlotte Mason inspired homeschooling methods, great posts about her home country, Australia, and much more.

Jeanne has had a month of great Aussie book giveaways.  I was priveleged enough to win this book:

This is a lovely living history book about Matthew Flinders, one of the Australian explorers.  I am looking forward to reading this story with my girls.

Jeanne's latest giveaway, a beautifully illustrated book about Koonaworra the Black Swan is still open until the end of Tuesday 29th September...wherever you are in the world!  So get on over to A Peaceful Day, comment on Jeanne's giveaway post and you never know...!

Great book find!

Posted in Living Books

Eeuwe came home from work last night with a couple of books from work.  Apparently when his employers immigrated to New Zealand from Holland they bought what used to be a secondhand bookshop. (It is now a picture framing business).    Anyway, they inherited some books from the bookshop and have decided years later to have a cleanout.  Eeuwe spotted a couple of books he thought I might like and brought them home.  One was a book about the artist Cezanne.  I thought that was great, as I didn't have on of his books yet, but after perusing his paintings, I decided it's not suitable to keep in a house of little girls!  When we study Cezanne we will pick some of his more savoury paintings from an internet site!

The other book however, is a wonderful find.  It is Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden!  I already have The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady (a Charlotte Mason enthusiast's favourite) and Nature Notes are Edith Holden's nature diary entries for 1905, the year before the Country Diary

It is full of Edith's beautiful watercolour & pencil illustrations as well as accompanying nature notes and many nature poems.  It makes a lovely companion to the Country Diary.

Great Booklist Links

Posted in Living Books

Here are a few links for my favourite booklists online:

Ambleside Online has great booklists for each year level as well as many other great resources and articles in the tradition of Charlotte Mason.

Classical Christian Education Support Loop also has a great booklist by reading level or by author.

Of course there are the books of booklists too, such as Honey for a Child's Heart by Gladys Hunt.

The Habit of Reading Aloud

Posted in Living Books

One of the things my husband and I believe has made a huge difference to our family life and to our children's vocabulary has been reading aloud.  We are grateful that when we first were considering homeschooling we discovered both Charlotte Mason's ideas and Classical methods.  Both of these stress the benefits of reading aloud good literature (CM would call them "Living books") as often as possible.  Since then (about 5 years ago) Eeuwe has attempted to read aloud to the girls every night that it is possible.  It doesn't happen on night when he has to go out to church meetings or other things.  It always takes place after dinner each night, and after family devotions.  Occassionally he'll make up a chapter on a Sunday afternoon if we don't have visitors.  So on average he probably gets to read to the girls about three, maybe four nights a week.  It is amazing now to look back at all the books he has managed to get through in this time.  I am often asked for ideas for read alouds and usually pass on my favourite lists.  I thought today I would brainstorm and try and remember all the books that have been read aloud in the past five years!

The Complete Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ~ A.A.Milne

The Chronicles of Narnia (second reading at the moment!) ~ C.S.Lewis

Several Paddington Bear books ~ Michael Bond

Stuart Little, Charlotte's Web, The Trumpet of the Swan ~ E.B.White

Pinnocchio ~ Carlo Collodi

Many of the Beatrix Potter tales

Treasury for Children (several stories) ~ James Herriot

Most of the Little House on the Prairie series ~ Laura Ingalls Wilder

Caddie Woodlawn ~ Carol Ryrie Brink

The Treasure Seekers, Five Children & It ~ Edith Nesbit

The Incredible Journey ~ Sheila Burnford

The Secret Garden, A Little Princess ~ Frances Hodgson Burnett

The Courage of Sarah Noble ~ Alice Dalgleish

Shadrach ~ Meindert de Jong

Just So Stories ~ Rudyard Kipling

The Cricket in Times Square ~ George Selden

Heidi ~ Johanna Spyri

Odd and several other titles by Amy Le Feuvre

Many "Twins" books by Lucy Fitch Perkins

Swiss Family Robinson ~ Johann Wyss

The Hobbit ~ J.R.R.Tolkien (and The Lord of the Rings are sure to come when the girls are a bit older!)

The Little Pilgrims Progress ~ John Bunyan, abridged

Mary Poppins ~ P.L.Travers

Pollyanna ~ Eleaner Porter

The Tanglewood's Secrets ~ Patricia St.John

The Sheep-Pig (Babe, the book), Ace, Daggy Dogfoot ~ Dick King Smith

Lassie Come Home ~ Eric Knight

Alice's Adventure's in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass ~ Lewis Carroll

The Borrowers, The Borrowers Afloat ~ Mary Norton

Anne of Green Gables ~ Lucy Maud Montgomery

The Veveteen Rabbit ~ Margery Williams

Five Little Peppers and How They Grew ~ Margaret Sidney

King of The Wind ~ Marguerite Henry

The Silver Brumby ~ Elyne Mitchell

There are probably a few more, but this gives you and idea of how many books a committed Dad can read to his children over five years, just a few nights a week!  Many of these have enriched our lives deeply, we can refer back to favourite characters, funny sayings, and the girls are often acting out the latest book.  I asked each of the girls which book was their favourite, and they each named one of the Chronicles of Narnia.  Bethany's & Ainsley's favourite is The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Emily's favourite is The Horse & His Boy.  I'll have to ask Eeuwe which is his favourite!  Well, surprise, surprise, Eeuwe's favourites to read aloud are the Chronicles of Narnia (he especially likes C.S.Lewis's sense of humour) and The Hobbit.

Happy reading!

Book Bargains!

Posted in Living Books

Here are some more great books I picked up at the Red Cross Book Sale on Saturday:

I have seen this referred to often for History and it will come in handy as it is a ready made timeline!

This one's on all the reading lists for Ancient History.

This book could be called "The Country Diary of a New Zealand Lady!"  Kerry Carman has included a daily nature diary as well as pencil sketches and beautiful watercolour illustrations.  It is great to find a book like this with plants, animals & seasons that are relevant to us here in NZ!  Here are some excerpts:

And another lovely NZ Nature Diary:

...again with beautiful pencil & watercolour illustrations...

...and just for Autumn...

I spent just over $60 in total and bought all the above books, the art books in this post and a stack of about 20 novels, including some classics and others by some of our favourite authors.  Oh, the need for more bookshelves...!
