The birds and the bees!
Posted in School Time
Well we are in the “human
birth and development” section of the patience unit. So I decided today was the
day…I sat down with the kids *a bit nervous* and had the dreadful talk. Yes,
that one. The birds and the bees! Oh my goodness, I have been stressing (and
praying) over this for months. I have always answered these questions in a
round about way as to avoid any further questioning.
I finally did it, and you
know what? It went so good! God is so GOOD! I used a book, and just read
through. We would pause as the kids had questions or when it talked about how
many inches the baby was at what stages we would measure out twizzlers to “see”
how small! I used a body book called Babies by Anna Sandeman. It took us
all the way through the process from making a baby (egg and sperm), and what
happens to make twins. It compared human development to animal development (how
fast it happens). It showed the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and how the
egg continues to divide after it’s been fertilized. Then it went on to show the
babies growth at 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, and so on all the way through the
pregnancy. It discussed how and why you look like your parents. The book also described
how a baby’s muscles, senses, and body control develop. The book was great and
really didn’t leave much for the kids to have questions about.
Anywho, it was a whole lot of
stress for really no reason! The part in the book about genes really sparked
the kids’ interests in heredity. They want to work on our family tree! I think
that’s wonderful, it will be a lot of fun!

I wanted to post to each of the three blogs I read. - Thanks for dropping in and saying Hi by the way. "HI back!!" I'm so glad that you were able to have "The Talk" with less stress than you imagined. How cool is our God for paving the way?
Your tree pictures - it looks like here (OK) We're going through our 3rd year of drought. On the flip side - too much rain can do the same thing.
Birthday girl - You have an 8 year old princess?? Mine oldest is about to turn 8!! She's been publishing newspapers (that would make a great blog) and putting a little box on each page that her birthday is coming up. In OCTOBER!! :-) Aren't they funny!
Have a most excellent of days!

You are quite the brave one for tackling that topic. I talked to my 8 year old son about circumcision today while reading about it in the Bible and he freaked when I talked about his "private parts." Okay, we will definitely need a little longer before we have "the talk."

Hi Dawn-your blog is so cute! I love the spools of thread and the teacups! I see you like quilting-I've made a couple patchwork quilts, but need help from my MIL to put the squares together. I love making cloth diapers & sundresses right now.
Thanks for your post at my blog!
The guide dog puppy--we filled out an application to be a foster family at their booth at the HS convention. It's thru Freedom Guide Dogs. I don't know what state you are in, so if you do a search for your state, you'll find organizations near you. They are always looking for foster families.
They do a lot of dogs as just under 50% meet the temperament requirements to get into the formal guide school when they are a year or so of age.
Anyway, we have him for 12-18 months. We just have to do basic obedience training, no people food, he has to live in the house (no getting in beds or on furniture, etc), give him lots of love and expose him to other people& children, other animals and lots and lots of places.
Once he's potty-trained and leash-trained, we will start taking him with us everywhere we go for the most part and taking him to places we don't normally go-like train stations & airports and walking on sidewalks in the nearest city.
Each organization has their own list of expectations & requirements, too.
Some have group meetings monthly that you bring the dog to (ours doesn't).
I think that's about it.
We did this unit when I was pregnant with our 3rd child (she's 22 months old now) and my dd( 8 at the time) was fascinated with the whole thing. The only thing we didn't cover was the actual how to of people-mating-LOL. It actually all came together pretty smoothly as we have lots of animals and they've seen horses, cows & chickens mating) We told my son less than dd, though (he was just 6 & wasn't as interested). My dd came with us to the hospital when the baby was born and got to see the birth-that was awesome! Holly
