Just Taking Notes

Feb. 21, 2008 - The rest of the story

Posted in Family life
So I guess I got some splainin' to do.

It was a normal Tuesday morning, almost.  I had already dropped my oldest off at his 10:30 debate class and had come home to try and complete another hour of school before leaving to pick him up. Really, I was having one of the worst days of my life.

You see, I suffer from mild depression, and in the winter, it really kicks my butt.  I used to take meds for it, but I decided after 3 years, that it was not worth the risk and realized that diet modifications and exercise usually will do the trick.  If only I could stick with the plan.

Back to the most recent worst-day-of-my-life story.  The boys were being boys and driving me crazy.  The baby was crying.  The girls were demanding.  I was almost in tears already when I locked myself in the bathroom to phone my dear husband for some consolation.  Fortunately, I was able to reach him and caught him on a good day.  Like the perfect husband that he is, I was comforted and consoled.  He met my needs and wiped my many tears away.  Then I looked at the time only to realize that I should have departed 10 minutes earlier to pick up my son.   Oops.

When I ran down stairs to gather my flock, I found the mess pictured below.  I shrugged my shoulders, grabbed the camera for a few shots to remember the day by, and ran out the door to get my son from class.

The story I heard was that the baby tipped over the waste bin and spilled the water all over the floor.  He must have done that while trying to wash the dishes as well.  The crumbs all over the floor are cereal crumbs that I had set aside for casserole topping, but after listening to my kids hound me with "Can we have the cereal crumbs?" for a month, I pitched them.

So, there you have it.

I will also add that my second son quietly cleaned up the whole mess when we came home, blessing my day abundantly.  Times are a little better now.

Nov. 25, 2007 - Temporarily unavailable

Posted in Family life
My blog is going to be on hold for a while as I need to really cut back on some things in order to focus more on my home and family.  Though this is but a very small portion of my time, it does take up time that should be devoted to other things.

So I might pop in to jot down a favorite recipe or document the annual Christmas photo, but I need to get some other things in order and this must go.

There now I feel free.

Oct. 31, 2007 - Many Thanks To...

...Carrie, The Gremlin Wrangler, for her amazingly beautiful pencil sketch of 2 of my babies (her choosing).  I don't know why it is so small here as it is much bigger in my photobucket album.  But isn't it nice?  Of course it is.  You know you love it and desperately want one of your own babies.

Sure, you can have a nice photo album full of hand cut and pasted scrapbook goodies,.  You can even photo shop your pictures to look like a pencil sketch, but nothing beats a genuine piece of artwork to add to your family album.

So please go over to her Etsy shop and arrange to have a portrait done before the Christmas holiday.  I highly recommend that you have her sketch a portrait for yourself or a family member to have as a family keepsake.

Oct. 18, 2007 - This week at our home

Posted in Family life
Sorry to keep you all in suspense as to what has been going on around our house the past few weeks.  I know you are all just itching to know so I will tell you using some fun visual aids.

First we have the fungus of the week- any guesses?

You got it.  Ringworm with a dab of tea tree oil and a coat of Gentian Violet.

Next you will see my Vanna skills in action.  I took this for a contest on my cloth diapering forum which required a photo that says "I am a parent."  Do I look like a Mom?

The next series of photos is to show you some of the fun we have around here on my good days.

Notice the self inflicted haircut?

Speaking of hair.  I think this will be the new rage among the youth soon, n'est pas?

Here you can see son #6 doing the dishes.  I do think that the dog does a much better job using the dishwasher.

This is an oldie but a goodie of son #5 a full 5 years ago, posing during our annual family Christmas picture photo shoot, which bears a striking resemblence to the next photo.

Due to the torrential rain we have received this week our dog has spent much time in jail due to his refusal to eliminate out in the rain, preferring to do his deed on my carpet next to the back door. GGGRRRRrrrrrg.

And lastly, you can see a few  of my cooking projects
(yes there were many more) that I have taken on recently.  Keep watching for my vegetarian main course recipe using polenta.  Can you say Yummy?

Don't let the golden brown crust fool you.  They are still doughy in the center.  I have finally come to the realization that I cannot fit a full recipe of cinnamon rolls in my 8x12 pan.

Yes, I did make this rustic artisan sourdough boule myself, thank you.

Sourdough bread from my own starter which has been brewing about 3 months now using this recipe here at preparedpantry.com  go ahead and give it a go.  It is sooo worth it.

Yes, I gave into making caramel apples with my kids.  We ate them after breakfast yesterday.  I have come to the conclusion that dessert is best served after breakfast NOT after dinner as many would suggest.  Sugar will only digest in the bodies of awake and active children not sleeping ones.  Trust me, I have observed this phenomenon for years and it is true.

Well, there you have it.  A glimpse into our lives this week.  I left out the puke pictures and baby splashing in the dirty cloth diaper pail to keep you from losing your own meal.  Your welcome.

I would love to see your photo tours so give me a link in the comments section and I will drop by for a visit after I take my chewy gooey brownies out of the oven and get the mud washed off my floors.

Sep. 15, 2007 - Ker-splat went our dinner

Posted in Family life
The Holy Spirit was in control today more than I usually allow.  He kept my mouth shut and my focus proper when my 10 Yo spilled the entire contents of our dinner casserole onto the dining room floor.

After a hard day of cooking 2 challah loaves, 2 breakfasts and 2 shepherd's pie casseroles I was tired and the kids were ready to eat.  My Dh drove off with 3 of his friends for a weekend fishing trip leaving me home with all of the little squirrels.  He pulled away and I called the kids to supper.  My 10yo was the first to arrive announcing "Great! Let's eat, I'm starving."  I told him that he could carry dinner to the table.  I should have listened to that gut instinct saying "NO".

Thunk, ker-splat, shouts of pain.

I saw the entire contents of my 9x13 pan under the table.  Of course I wanted to shout "What have you done?", but instead, took a breath, gained my composure and asked, "What happened?  Are you OK?"  and focused upon the child and his needs and not the obviously ruined dinner.

After determining that he was fine except for a minor burn on the leg, I calmly cleaned up the mess thinking that if we were starving it would still make a fine meal, except for the dog hair and crumbs from lunch clinging to my mashed potato topping, meat filling and assorted vegetables.  The dog will enjoy it I'm sure.

Normally, I would quickly pull something else together, but I was tired and thought the story would amuse my husband, plus I could boast about my Godly response to the situation.  He was amused and then said that I could order some pizza.  Wowsers!  Pizza?  OK.

Well that didn't happen because the only delivery place no longer delivers.  So ultimately, I gave in to the pleas of my children and thinness of my pocketbook and drove to my newest arch nemesis, McDs, where I spent $22 on poison for my family.  They loved it and loved me for it.
