Just Taking Notes
Sep. 15, 2007 - Ker-splat went our dinner
The Holy Spirit was in control today more than I usually allow. He kept my mouth shut and my focus proper when my 10 Yo spilled the entire contents of our dinner casserole onto the dining room floor.
After a hard day of cooking 2 challah loaves, 2 breakfasts and 2 shepherd's pie casseroles I was tired and the kids were ready to eat. My Dh drove off with 3 of his friends for a weekend fishing trip leaving me home with all of the little squirrels. He pulled away and I called the kids to supper. My 10yo was the first to arrive announcing "Great! Let's eat, I'm starving." I told him that he could carry dinner to the table. I should have listened to that gut instinct saying "NO".
Thunk, ker-splat, shouts of pain.
I saw the entire contents of my 9x13 pan under the table. Of course I wanted to shout "What have you done?", but instead, took a breath, gained my composure and asked, "What happened? Are you OK?" and focused upon the child and his needs and not the obviously ruined dinner.
After determining that he was fine except for a minor burn on the leg, I calmly cleaned up the mess thinking that if we were starving it would still make a fine meal, except for the dog hair and crumbs from lunch clinging to my mashed potato topping, meat filling and assorted vegetables. The dog will enjoy it I'm sure.
Normally, I would quickly pull something else together, but I was tired and thought the story would amuse my husband, plus I could boast about my Godly response to the situation. He was amused and then said that I could order some pizza. Wowsers! Pizza? OK.
Well that didn't happen because the only delivery place no longer delivers. So ultimately, I gave in to the pleas of my children and thinness of my pocketbook and drove to my newest arch nemesis, McDs, where I spent $22 on poison for my family. They loved it and loved me for it. |

Sep. 9, 2007 - Shots from the farm
Aug. 25, 2007 - Am I old yet?
Now that school is in full swing around here my blog is suffering even more than it did before school was in session. Sorry, I just can't help it.
This month DH and I "celebrated" our 13th wedding anniversary (Aug 13th) with me puking in the bathroom while he fixed leftovers for the kids, which was about the 3rd time in his life he has reheated leftovers or made any dinner for the kids without my help. It was a blast. Almost as great as all of our other anniversaries combined.
We also celebrated my 35th birthday, which is the 26th, last night, not with illness but with dinner and a movie. We had a whopping $10 in the budget for date night this month so we were planning on a trip to Taco Bell and Borders for our big night on the town, but to my surprise, my mother gave me a check for $100 and told me to spend it on fillet mingon and lobster tail, which I could have done only if I had been dining alone.
As much as I wanted to order the most expensive dinner on the menu, I had to pass on the $44 plate and stick with something cheaper or we would find ourselves washing dishes instead of catching a movie. In the end, we spent $95 on dinner for 2 entrees and 2 drinks. However we did get FREE dessert because our waiter messed up our order causing our dinner to be delayed. That was a double blessing. It allowed us much time for pleasant conversation while gazing into one another's eyes and the treats I would have otherwise missed out on. And I must have my sweets or I turn into a pumpkin after midnight.
I can't wait to see what the kids have up their sneaky little sleeves for tomorrow. I bet they beg me to stop at Costco on the way home from church so they can get a birthday cake for themselves me. |

Aug. 10, 2007 - Dancing
I just thought this was too cute to not share.
My mother sent a package of garage sale dresses for my girls. My Ds #5 dresses himself up in his Sunday clothes then had DD#1 put on a matching dress so they could dance. TOO cute. Notice the painted fingernails. And this must have been taken shortly after Ds was shot right between the eyes. Read about it here.

Aug. 5, 2007 - Family
My dearest loving husband wrote this poem for me this week and presented it to me today.
Family
Sandy heads in tow
like unruly planets
circle her radiance;
five all Mars and warring
two so soft and gold and blue they must one day sustain life
one pale moon in closest orbit.
I brave their whirling venerations
and rush in close to
their sun, my companion;
together
we pull the system to orbit
ever nearer the true Son.
Dark space, and cold,
on every side pressing
our Creator defends.
My life's love to hold,
God's gracious blessing
true love, intimate friend. |
