destroyed in the fires, have them contact the MFW office. MFW will
replace current MFW users' materials at no cost. MFW will provide
curriculum for new customers at a 50% discount.
Our prayers are with all the families who are affected by the fires." |

Sep. 9, 2007 - A 10yo boy's nature poem
Getting my boys to write anything is about as easy as extracting one's own wisdom teeth. There is much whining, complaining, pleading for mercy and other such nonsense. But I force their hands until lead hits the paper and their chicken scratches fill the page.
My 10 year old is by far the most resistant to writing, or doing anything that takes any more of his precious time than absolutely possible. If things went his way, he would have all of his school completed in 63 minutes a day, tops.
In an effort to work with him rather than against him, I decided to give him a poetry assignment, since he told me that he really enjoys poetry. Because poems are short, right? The first day, I had him read a short nature poem in his reading book. Then the next day, I told him he was to write his own nature poem. Any length, any form, but it most have some rhyming and meter. To my surprise, there was little complaining. I sent him outside with pencil and paper in hand and about 45 minutes later, I received the poem below. I am so amazed at how well he did. You all may not be impressed, but for us, this is definitely a milestone.
Unedited, untitled poem
In the morning when I rise,
I go outside and with my eyes
I see colors of blue and green,
The finest colors ever seen
As I'm walking, listening so,
I hear birds singing, high and low.
And while I'm walking I also see,
Crickets chirpping gleefully.
I look up and as I do,
I see the sky ocean blue,
I see deer running free,
They look so happy, don't you see
I see ants working hard,
for the winter still so far
Early in the chilly morn,
I see animals being born.
And I get to see the trees,
moving graciously in the breeze.
In the bushes fair and green,
Tiny creatures are unseen.
Lovely flowers of blue and red,
Lying in the flower bed.
There's an open spot in the wood,
To plant more nature, it will be good |

Aug. 10, 2007 - New school year
This was our first week of school for the new school year which officially began Aug 1st for us. I just ordered my Creation to the Greeks basic package which should be here by next Tues. I purchased a few of the deluxe items used for WAY less than the new price.
BIBLE
So far this week we focused on reading 2 John each day and discussing it because my husband recently did a sermon on that book which gave us a great opportunity to look into it a little more and search the many scripture references he provided.
We will be learning hymns and making our own Hymnals this year using O Worship the King by John MacArthur, Joni Eareckson Tada, and Robert & Bobbie Wolgemuth. I photocopy the hymn out of the back of the book and they punch them and put them into a theme paper binder. I plan to have them learn 1 hymn every 3 weeks so we can get through the entire book in a 36 week school year.
Click here for the cyberhymnal version.
MATH
Math-U-See for everyone
LA & Reading
Just doing some basic reading and discussion right now, plus finishing the dreaded "Summer Reading Program" with the library. Look here and here read the saga.
SCIENCE
Still exploring the woods and reading animal info cards someone gave us. Also my oldest has teamed up with a neighbor boy to tear apart our old dryer and build a generator. Pretty cool actually. They figure if you hand crank it hard enough you can get about 1/4 amp.
HISTORY/SS
We got some late 90's God's World News issues (like Christian weekly readers) from a friend that the kids have really enjoyed reading. This until our MFW comes in.
PE
Oldest ds took a 1 hour class at the library on self defense for teens. Pretty cool. This also fits into SS.
That's all the stuff we did this week that I can think of besides lots of swimming in our $11 family inflatable pool.
