words really can hurt
Recently a child was at our house playing. The dc were in the backyard & Dakota was sitting at the top of the slide on our playset. I was in the kitchen & could hear everything out the door. The other child & my ds G-8 had climbed the playset to go down the slide but of course Dakota was there. G said "Koda, can you please move?". The other dc said "why are you asking him? Hes to stupid to understand you. Just shove him out of the way. Hes to stupid to talk so he cant tattle on you anyway." Needless to say I was VERY upset & hurt. Dakota is NOT stupid. In fact he is probably smarter than many dc his age, at least in some things. I know it is hard for dc to understand Autism but it was still a very hurtful thing for me to hear. I was proud of my ds though. He turned to his friend & said "He is NOT dumb. His brain just works differant than yours".
Just because a person cant talk does NOT mean they are stupid!!!!!! |
