that little stinker!!!!!!!

We have known for a LONG time that he is smarter than he lets on. We also know that he fights doing anything that isn't his idea. Problem is, we didn't always know what he was just being stubborn on & what he really didn't understand.  At 7yo he is not reliably potty trained. He tells us right after he goes, but never in time to make it to a bathroom. We never was sure if he was being stubborn or if he really didn't  feel the urge to go until too late. Recently he has given us a few clues that he does know exactly what going potty means & that he knows how to stop himself from going when he wants to. So today we tried an experiment. We put him in sweats & real underwear just to see what he would do when he needed to go potty. He has been dry all day except for 1 accident.   This includes taking HIMSELF potty several times when he thought no one was looking.  At one point when I took him potty he kept trying to get up & I told him no, that I wanted him to sit & try to go potty. He looked me straight in the eye & VERY stubbornly  said "put diaper!"    Huh????????  Ok then, so basically he does know exactly what he is doing.  I cannot believe this little stinker sometimes. So now the question is... HOW do I get him to cooperate & go potty rather than just be stubborn?????????? When he dosnt want to do something he just shuts himself down.
