bath time

During the late part of my pregnancy & while healing from my c-section my dh took over giving Koda his baths. I never took that back over because it was just so easy to have someone else do it for me. Tonite both littles were asleep when he took his bath so I sat & talked to him while he played in the water. I realized that not only do I miss that but it is SUCH a great learning time for him.

We played with his toys & I got out his old foam letters that stick to the tub walls. Most have been lost so we could only spell about 3 words but he had so much fun sticking them up & saying their names. I put up some letters & he read the words to me & then he would take a letter  down & sound out the remaining letters. Like I had put up F-U-N, he said "fun" then took away the f & gave me a grin & said "un".

I also discovered that bath time is the perfect time to read to him. He loves books but hates to sit still to be read to. He played quietly in the water while I read to him & every few lines would look up & repeat one of the words back to me so I know he was listening. At the end of the book was a picture of a jack-o-lantern, (it was a book about Winnie the Pooh growing a pumpkin & then he carves a face in it after he picks it) Koda looked at it & said "pumpkin face". LOL

I decided to try something new with him. I got out the shaving cream & put a blob of it on the side of the tub & showed him how to write letters in it. He LOVED it!!!! He was giggling & sticking his foam letters in it. If I wrote a couple letters he would copy me. When he ran out he gestured for me to get more for him. I asked him if he could say more & he didnt but I got it anyway because he was doing such a great job with eye contact & gestures to make his wants known. When that ran out he started gesturing again. I told him no, that it was time to get out of the tub now. He looked me right in the eye & said "more?" . Yes he got a tiny bit more to play with . After he got out of the tub & dressed for bed I walked away for just a minute & came back to find him with shaving cream all over his hands & jammies. Whoops, I had forgotten to put it away the last time . Definitly will need to hide that now or I will be cleaning up a lot of messes. I may have created a monster LOL.

I had forgotten just how much learning he seems to do during bath time. It seems like it is just so soothing to him & without  other distractions & noises he can really concentrate on stuff.  I need to make sure I remember the benefits of learning during bath time.
