Feb. 6, 2006 - Potty Training
We just finished potty training Caleb a couple of months ago. We were a couple of months behind schedule with him, but I was waiting, hoping he would at least learn to SAY "pee" and "poop" before he learned to DO it. The last time I trained a non-speaking toddler to the potty, I found it somewhat embarrassing to take him to the church nursery and say, "If he flaps his arms like a bird, it means he has to go to the bathroom." However, it retrospect, that is far more desirable than Calebs sign-langauge which includes clucking like a chicken, holding on to his "private area" and dancing. The problem with this is that he has found it to be so effective he uses it whenever he fails to get our attention or wants a story read. The up side of this is that there are very few grumpy bugs left in the house as Caleb is always sure to bring a smile to your face, the down side is, I don't dare to take him in public. Perhaps God is trying to teach me a lesson in humility.

Feb. 6, 2006 - Curious - how old?

Our first three trained before they were two. Our fourth is a little behind, if you can call it that, as he is just beginning at 23 months to go when I ask him to in the morning, evening and whenever I think of it. The others told me when they needed to go and trained in one week or less.
I hesitate to even type the words, but I fear he may be our last biological child (feel free to sing "The Ole Grey Mare Ain't What She Used To Be" here - kids are 10, 8, 3, nearly 2 with no miscarriages or birth control between pregnancies) so I'm guilty of keeping those sweet little cloth diapers on a bit longer...I haven't pushed AT ALL.
The thoughts of no diapers makes me want to cry. I know. I'm crazy.

Oh that made me laugh. "flapping arms like a chicken" so sweet. My youngest just finished up training. He doesn't speak that much, I think I might teach him to flap like a chicken for the church nursery workers...they would get a kick out of that.
Well, I clicked on to your site because you have a bigger family then me. I love big families and reading about them. And I think homeschooling is trial and error. Espically when each child has their own learning style, and you have your own teaching style,. So just take it easy and enjoy your family. Bren
