Tongue
          Plbbbbt!

I have had Mr. Cotton on my mind all week and have often imitated Jack Sparrow's reaction to that man's tongueless state in my own mind, if not in the open! (Pirates of the Carribean)  Tongues have been the subject of much conversation and speculation around here since Mr. K showed up with a bagful for us.

*in the middle of history discussion with Madeline and Alexandra, doorbell rings*
Mr. K: I have 6 tongues here.  How many do you want?
Us:   Uhhhh....
Mr. K: Beef tongue.  You know.  It's really good.  Just boil it, skin it and slice it up.  Delicious!  It is only muscle meat like any other beef you eat.
Me: Well, since I have never cooked it before and I don't know how the kids will react, I better only take one.
Mr. K: Only 1!  No!  I have 6 here for you!
Me: *really having a hard time getting my mind around this new concept.  Looks in bag. Stomach heaves at the enormous tongues (still with taste buds!) in bag*    Um.  Okay, then, I guess we'll try 2.
Mr. K:  Great.  Get me a bag so I can transfer them into it for you.  *dumps 2 tongues into new bag*

So later on, I take one more look at these things.  And I realize that there is absolutely no way that I can cook and skin them!  When Jay comes home, he is pleased to have them.  "It is really good meat!  Very lean and delicious.  I had them as a kid at my grandparents'."  Okay - you skin 'em!

Saturday morning, I dump them into a pot, trying hard not to look at these looong, curved tongues.  But I can't help remembering cows licking their mouths, trying to chase away flies....  After that, Jay did the rest.

I could not bring myself to even taste it.  I know - it is a mental problem.  I do realize where the rest of my meat comes from; and that this is good meat; and that it is all in my head.  So I apologize to all of you who do not have this mental handicap.  Still, call me Monk if you want to, but I cannot get past it.  Nor could Sophia and Eliza, though they were brave enough to taste it -and to admit that it tasted good, but not brave enough to eat an entire sandwich.

Jay, Alexandra, Abigail and Ethan (Madeline & Emma were away) just loved it!!  Alexandra said it was the best beef she had ever had - tasty and tender.  Ethan liked it so much that he wants to try other tongue now.  "Can Mr. K bring us fish tongue?"!!

I think it is very interesting that anyone to whom I have spoken that has actually tried beef tongue really likes it.  It is only those of us (probably city slickers) who have never before tried it and cannot get over the horror of eating something that might be tasting us back, who have anything bad to say about it!

So much talk of tongues -- makes us sound Pentecostal!    ("Not that there's anything wrong with that!"  Seinfeld)

By the way, last year when Mr. K brought us elk (which is also very lean and very delicious!), Ethan asked, "When will Mr. K bring us more of that elf-meat?!"

Feb. 11, 2007 - Thanks for the giggle

Posted by Gatekeeper

Having grown up on a small farm, I well know the stomach churning effects of certain animal parts. I spent a large part of my youth as a vegtarian because of it! I was just wandering around the blogs this morning (home from church with a sick little one) and came across this post. Thanks for the giggle and the trip down memory lane. And even now, I have never tried tongue.

I am so with you on the tongue thing! I doubt that I could ever bring myself to taste it, let alone prepare it. It makes me queasy just thinking about it!

Hey, it's just meat. And if you think about it, hot dogs are a lot worse. :P

But I must admit, I was quite leery of it. It's actually quite good though! Now I guess the next step for me would be to try camel's nose! :P

Words fail to convey how happy I am that this has been your experience and not mine.

I am right there with you in not tasting land.
