Oct. 25, 2006 - school stuff!~!~!~!~!~

Pilgrims, After 12 years, they decided to move again. Having gone back to England to obtain the backing of the Virginia Company, 102 Pilgrims set out for America.
Mayflower,
Samoset,Samoset was an Abknaki who had come to Cape Cod from his tribal area in what is now southeastern Maine.
Massasoit,Massasoit signed a peace treaty with the Pilgrims on March 22,1621. It was an agreement that was never broken, and the two groups enjoyed a peaceful coexistence
Squanto,Squanto belonged to the Patuxet Indians (that is now rhode island.) The Indians ate berries, beans, corn, and fish. They also hunted animals in the forest.
Plymouth,The pilgrims founded Plymouth on Dec. 21, 1620, establishing a settlement that became the seat of Plymouth Colony in 1633 and a part of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691.
Puritans,
Quakers,The first Quakers to arrive in America were viewed as dangerous heretics in many of the colonies. They were deported as Witches, imprisoned or hung.
Salem Witch Trials,    From June through September of 1692, nineteen men and women, all having been convicted of witchcraft, were carted to Gallows Hill, a barren slope near Salem Village, for hanging. Another man of over eighty years was pressed to death under heavy stones for refusing to submit to a trial on witchcraft charges. Hundreds of others faced accusations of witchcraft. Dozens languished in jail for months without trials.  Then, almost as soon as it had begun, the hysteria that swept through Puritan Massachusetts ended.
First Thanksgiving,  The tradition of the Pilgrims' first Thanksgiving is steeped in myth and legend.  Few people realize that the Pilgrims did not celebrate Thanksgiving the next year, or any year thereafter, though some of their descendants later made a "Forefather's Day" that usually occurred on December 21 or 22.  Several Presidents, including George Washington, made one-time Thanksgiving holidays.  In 1827, Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale began lobbying several Presidents for the instatement of Thanksgiving as a national holiday, but her lobbying was unsuccessful until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln finally made it a national holiday with his 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation.
