Homeschooling and American Heritage Girls: Badge work
AHG has 60 badges that can be earned at 3 different levels. Badges can easily be incorporated into any home education program. Badges are categorized into 6 "frontiers": Heritage, Family Living, Arts, Outdoor Skills, Personal Well-Being, and Science and Technology. The AHG Handbook is like your own personal guide to 60 multi-level unit studies!
In TN 131, our goal is to do three "all-troop" badges each year. This means that all the groups work on the same badge, although they are working within their own grade-level groups. This year, for instance, we completed World Heritage (Heritage frontier) at camp, Physical Fitness (Personal Well-being frontier) in the fall, and Women Inventors (Science frontier) in the winter. We also began the Horsemanship badge in the spring. This summer--actually, next week!--our girls will finish up their Horsemanship badge by doing a 2-part camp at a local equestrian center.
Our goal is to always plan our upcoming year's worth of badges in the early summer so that we can alert parents. This helps parents in their own planning. We don't want girls to spend several meetings doing a badge that they've already done at home. Families are encouraged (though certainly not required) to do at-home badges, and most do. "Kitchen Scientist," for example, is a great unit study for families with children of all ages. Younger children can conduct taste tests and experiment with invisible ink, while older children can investigate leavening agents and learn to prepare a wet mount. I'm looking forward to doing the "Ancestor Detector" badge with my daughter this year. In this we'll work together to create a family history scrapbook, learn about the native country of our relatives, make a family tree, and more.
The AHG handbook costs about $16 plus postage. That's an incredible deal for 60 unit studies! |

Money Management Badge
I wrote the Money Management Badge for AHG when I served as their Treasurer back in 2003. They have added so many more badges now! Wow! I don't have a recent Handbook, so tell me, what does the Money Management badge look like? I wonder if AHG has changed it much since I wrote it. I had a lot of resources, books and web sites. And fun projects, I think. But I think doing a tax return is fun-really!

Homeschooling and American Heritage Girls
Homeschooling and American Heritage Girls
I am a Homeschool mom and I am an American Heritage Girl leader. I highly recommend the program. I am the leader of the Pionee/Patriot girls in my troop. I am also part of the troop board. I have been involved in American Heritage Girls for about 8 years now, 7 of them as a leader. I have been homeschooling my children since 1992 and so far have one graduated from Businiess college, the second one will graduate from the Nursing college in December, my son will start college in the fall and I still have one at home being home schooled. My oldest daughter didn't have the opportunity to be an American Heritage Girl but she did volunteer service hours and helped. My seconded oldest daughter started as a Pioneer and went all the way and earned the highest level of Stars and Stripes. She was the 8th recipient nationwide and the 1st recipient in the state of Kentucky. My son is an Eagle Scout and has many times helped us with projects that involved the outdoors. My youngest has a goal of earning all the badges and being a Stars and Stripes recipient.
I do, as do many other homeschool moms, use the program as a help in their homeschooling. When we work on a badge we can incorporate that into our homeschooling requirements. For example: When we work on a cooking badge we can meet the badge requirements and also include that in Home Economics Cooking Class. The Nature and Wildlife, Space Exploration, Aviation and more can be included in Science. Women Inventors fits with History.
Not only is it beneficial to combine the AHG program and Homeschooling for obvious reasons listed above but it also helps the girls meet new people. They learn challenges, team work and goal setting. I've had girls come to me along with their parents telling me what a plus it has been for their daughter. They feel it really helped their daughter to become the person she is today and if it weren't for the leadership, encouragement, challenges and yes, fun of American Heritage Girls, some of these girls wouldn't be as successful and at peace with themselves as they now are.
I am getting ready to start my next year in American Heritage Girls. My youngest daughter will be receiving her Harriet Tubman award at our spring ceremony. The girls in my group are so excited and looking forward to a year of fun and fellowship along with the learning and progress.
I encourage all parents with daughters ages 5-17 to check out the program and see what benefits you can find with it.
I also recommend that parents volunteer in some way to help. Whether it be becoming a leader, assistant leader, fund raiser organizer, PJ party planner, or if you can help with paper work, but find a way to volunteer some of your time to show appreciation to those that volunteer a large amount of their time to make this program a success for all these girls.
