A Life Better Than I Deserve

Bird song, cool breezes, and God's blessings

Yesterday morning as I was hanging out a load of freshly washed clothes on the clothesline I noticed the wonderful coolness of the morning and the myriad of different bird calls I was hearing. The morning was unseasonably cool (around 78 degrees F), and a lovely breeze was blowing through the hundreds of acres of wooded property directly adjacent to our house. Dozens of birds were singing in the lovely summer morning weather.

The moment was so peaceful, as I hung out the freshly laundered clothes and tried to discern the individual bird calls. My mind drifted to the Scripture verse about how God cares for even the little sparrows--some of the smaller, plainer birds we see in our yard. I considered His care for me. And I was at peace as I sensed His presence.

You might wonder, why was I hanging my clothes out when I have a perfectly good clothes dryer? I recently read an article on how much money the average family spends on simply drying their clothing in a clothes dryer (at least 15% of the power bill--and our family is definitely larger than the average family!) Since we are economizing, I decided to begin hanging out laundry again.

You know, I could have had a bad attitude about it. I could have dragged my feet and complained to God about how our income is less than it was a year or two ago. I could have worried and fretted about that. I could have ignored the fact of our lesser income, hoping it would simply go away. I could have stubbornly insisted that we don't need to cut back--in fact, maybe we need to go out to eat more and go to the movies more--to alleviate our stress. I could have done all these things and more. Except for God's grace in my heart, I would have.

But I would have missed out on a blessing. Sometimes I need to take some time to be still and know that He is God. My days are busy and sometimes hectic. I need the break in my day to hang out laundry and listen to the birds and remember His care for me. To get vitamin D. To pray and lift up my prayer requests. To meditate on that Scripture verse I am memorizing.

Take a moment today and listen to the birds sing and know that He is God. Be blessed by His care and His presence.
