A Quiliting Poem...

Taken from The Romance of the Patchwork Quilt in America.

A Crazy Quilt

They do not make them any more,
For quilts are cheaper at the store
Than woman's labor, though a wife
Men think the cheapest thing in life.
But now and then a quilt is spread
Upon quaint old walnut bed,
A crazy quilt of those days
That I am old enough to praise.

Some woman sewed these points and squares
Into a pattern like life's cares.
Here is a velvet that was stong,
The poplin that she wore so long,
A fragment from her daughter's dress,
Like her, a vanished loveliness;
Old patches of such things as these,
Old garments and old memories.

And what is life? A crazy quilt;
Sorrow and joy, and grace and guilt,
With here and there a square of blue
For some old happiness we knew;
And so the hand of time will take
The fragments of our lives and make,
Out of life's remnants, as they fall,
A thing of beauty, after all.

Douglas Malloch

I borrowed a book from my friend Samantha titled: Crazy Patchwork, and I am so inspired to make something like the sqare pictured above (that I did not take), after I finish the pinwheel quilt. I love all the different fabrics and textures and embroidery, the haphazard piecing together...I can't wait to try it with fabric that I have had around the house. I love the idea of recycling material and with it, creating art. So cool!

Love one another!~Adrienne

Your quilt colors are beautiful (in your previous post). We couldn't believe you bought them at Walmart!! And I enjoyed your quilt poem although I've never made a crazy quilt. I look forward to checking back and seeing your finished product!

What a great quilt and poem! Seems we've had the same inspirations floating around in our heads. I'd went and checked out a stack of great quilting books from the library, and have just fallen in love with the crazy quilts as well! *smiles* I'd planned for that to be our next project here too, "great minds think alike" and all...
And...*er* about that housework, um yeah... I'm getting to that now. LOL If I'd waited for THAT to be done, I'd not be quilting at all. LOL
I can't wait to see your pinwheel pieces coming together!

I love those Victorian crazy quilts, with the velvets and laces. When you do yours, you should post your steps like you and Randi are with the pinwheel one so we can follow along!
