Every year about his time, I get excited about attending the state homeschool convention. Why would something like this excite me? Several reasons come to mind.
Fellowship. It always amazes me to see the hundreds of homeschooling families from across the state that are attending the convention. It is encouraging to be among so many like-minded people. I enjoy seeing familiar faces of those I’ve met in the past, and have fun meeting new people as well.
Encouragement. The state convention always has a slate of excellent speakers. The conference speakers come from across the country to share their expertise about homeschooling issues, family building, educational ideas, and other topics that will minister to parents who teach their own children. I always come away with great notes and food for thought.
Educating myself. This is my “in-service training”. During the convention, there are always many workshops for homschooling parents. There are workshops for new homeschoolers and veterans, topical workshops, such as special needs education, and workshops given about specific curriculum. These workshops are often taught by the authors of the curriculum.
Curriculum. This can be the really fun part- browsing and shopping! Even if you don’t plan to buy all your curriculum at the convention, this is an excellent opportunity to take a close look at the curriculum you are considering. It is great to be able to get a hands-on look at all those great books, compare different curriculums and see what is new on the market. Most vendors offer great prices and free shipping for convention shoppers.
Some people may complain that the price of admission is too high or unfair. If you think about it though, you will see what a good value it is. The admission cost is for your entire family for two days, not just for one person. (And I highly recommend that you bring dad along. Children can also enjoy walking through the curriculum hall.) The cost is very reasonable when compared to many other events we participate in. For example:
Women of Faith conference - $85 for one person
Movie for family of 6 - $35-50 (for 2 hours-not including popcorn!)
Concert ticket - $35 for one person!
AU or UA football ticket -$40 (for 1 person, for 3 hours!)
See what I mean? We are so blessed to have such a great opportunity for home educators in our state. For details on time/location/speakers, check out: www.chefofalabama.org |
