I love Ambleside Online. I have diligently used their schedule for year 1 with my kids. In the last few days, I have come across TONS of great books that I could end up using to make my own curriculum, similar to amblesides. Books like Child's history of the World, simply charlotte masons' spelling wisdom, Apologia, and the collection of books by Mike Venezia that I came across at the library. For now I am going to continue to glean from the information at Ambleside, but in the future, I may just use these books and the information I have discovered, to make my own curriculum using notebooks. You can cover virutally any subject using notebooks. Nature notebooks, composer notebooks, artist notebooks, grammar notebooks, etc. We are currently doing a presidents notebook. I have this wonderful book called Mr. President. It has small 2 page biographies about each president. We started with George Washington this week. I have been reading George washington by D'Aulaire, and Washington by Mike Venezia. I googled George Washington, and found tons of pictures that I printed out, and let the kids cut and glue them into their notebook. I had them write a fact that they learned from each reading on an index card and had them glue that into their notebooks as well. The kids LOVE the notebooking!
Speaking of notebooking, I am going to put a word in for the book of centuries found on the simply charlotte mason website. When ever we come across a famous person is what ever we may be reading, whether it be an artist, a president, an explorer, a hymn writer, or a composer, we make notebook pages and place the pages inside our book of centuries. The kids and I have learned so much about what people lived at what times. It is also amazing seeing which people were alive at the same time. Like President Washington and Mozart. I had no idea that they were contemporaries. It is going to be so much fun seeing when things took place, and who lived during those times.
Here are some great links to notebooking.
