What do you do for Bible?

I'd like to know what you use for Bible in your home.  Do you just pick up the Word and read it to your children and then discuss the Scriptures?  Or do you have a devotional-type book to help you along?  Or????

I've done different things during our bible time, but I can't seem to settle on one approach that I really like.... that is interesting enough for the kids AND also teaches them and draws them to the Word.  I know that isn't MY job - it's the Holy Spirit who draws them.  I'd just like to have our bible time be memorable and enjoyable.  I'd like my children to look back at that time spent and smile.

So, what about you?  What are you doing for bible in your home?

Blessings,

Mar. 21, 2006 - What We Do

We have done different things at different stages. The one thing we do consistently is Awana. My kids work on Awana verses every day from 3 years old through 6th grade. (I am hoping to find a church that goes pass 6th grade next year for my oldest.) Right now my oldest (11) is also doing a daily devotional book. My 5 yr old we read differnet kids level bible stores with her. Our favorite are the Alice In Bibleland series. We also read aloud from the Bible. It's all good!

We are currently using a book called "Family Funstuff - Bible Stories." It's by God Prints. (www.Godprints.com) It's for elementary aged kids. The language is clear and understandable. My kids love this book, but they're pretty young. So, we just read and do a few of the ideas for now. I'll pull it back out in a couple of years so we can do all the stuff in there. It has the Bible story. Then the "Godprint." This explains what characteristics God wants to give kids that are illustrated in the story. It has a "What Digby Dug Up" (Digby's a dog.) They're fun Bible facs and interesting cultural tidbits that lead to a clearer understanding of the story.
There are Jake's Mirth Quake: Lively Games for the family; Mo's Fab Lab: Science Stuff; Issy's Art Cart: Creative Projects; PJ's Good to Go: Simple ways to serve others; Herbie's Hideaway: activities for thoughtful reflection; Cafe de Click: Food fun to help celebrate what God does for us; GP Theater Company: imaginitive ways to relive the story; Wally's Walkabout: whole-body ways to learn; God Talk: creative, family-involving ways to pray.
I got it at a Chrisitian discount book store for $9. It has 415 pages, and it's a hardback.
Here's a couple of neat online sources:

Mar. 21, 2006 - What we do......

Our time together has evolved into several different things. We start out with LEADING LITTLE ONES TO GOD, then go to the piano to sing a hymn that relates to what we just read. For example, today's lesson was on the many names of God, so we sang "Come, Thou Almighty King" and the kids pointed out the different names of God in that song. Then we go over our memorization (right now it is Psalm 46) 2x. We then read the Proverbs chapter that corresponds to the day of the month and another chapter in a book of our choice (right now we are going through Ephesians). Each morning, each child also has time for "private Bible time". The three oldest can read wherever they want and spend a bit of time praying, trying to prepare their heart for the day. That happens right after breakfast clean up. I give them 30 minutes for this.

We have just kind of "come into" this over time. The three oldest kids take turns reading aloud to practice reading Scripture slowly and in a way that little "G-man" can kind of understand. It has helped them in their oral presentation. After we read, we also do some kind of narrating or sharing. Today, we each picked a verse in Proverbs 21 that convicted us and/or wanted the Lord to help us with. Then we pray, asking God to go before us and help us in our day, reminding us of what we have learned or been made aware of in Scripture.

This then easily transitions into our read aloud time.

I am sorry this became so long. It is just one idea that works for one family. It warms my heart to be sitting around the fireplace together reading, studying and memorizing God's word.

One other thing, the older kids do a more indepth study with me, but usually using a book. For example, my ds14 is reading through THE PURSUIT OF HOLINESS with me.

FYI! Blessings,
Becky

to mention, scripture memory, and character building books. And, most of the curriculum we use has Bible interwoven throughout.

I read my Bible every day while the kids do their seat work in the morning.
My 12 yr old daughter has gotten into a habbit of reading her Bible in her room before starting school. She and I read Keys for kids which is a website with new devotionals every day... they really teach a lot to kids... We pray and begin school.
My son 14 and 9th grade has DVD Bible from ABeka which he seems to enjoy is geared toward high school kids... I also use many opportunities to share what I read that day during lunch and dinner and discuss with them how my reading affects my thoughts... This is what works for us :) - I am sure you will glean from all of us and come up with your best way of doing Bible... :)

Thanks so much for all of your comments!! This is the second time I've heard about "God Prints." I think I will have to look into this further! A friend of mine emailed me to tell me about "Word of Life." I plan to look into that as well!

What a blessing this place is!

I recently wrote about this on my blog! :) We used to have a lot of devotionals as well as children's books that had Bible stories in them. But we were recently personally convicted that these were watered down versions of stories and were missing important parts. I read the same type books growing up. I taught my children that Noah brought two of every animal on the ark. Did you know that is NOT TRUE? I didn't until I read the Biblical account (rather than just the children's books). Also, there are not three wise men (the Bible doesn't actually say how many there were, just that there were three gifts, and also they were not there at the time of Jesus' birth, but a few years after His birth). I didn't know that until I read the Biblical account. Also, the stories leave out important parts (like Anna and oh, what was the name of the man that God allowed to live to see the Son of God?). We feel those are important parts that have been left out of children's Bible storybooks.

There are many other instances just like the ones above. So now we have started reading stories directly from the Bible. We don't want our children to go for so long believing a watered down version of a Bible story just because it is easier for them to read. I know this might rub some people the wrong way. Again, this was a PERSONAL conviction. I must admit that when we first started reading stories directly from the Bible the kids were not too happy about it (where are the pictures? this is boring!). But now, my 6yr understands WHY we are reading the true account from the Bible and has started asking us to read from the Bible. And of course, the 4yr and 2yr are quick to follow 6yr example.
