I know I've had this on my sidebar for quite a while. I have a few moments this morning, I thought I'd share what my children do right now. Of course, summer time is when I re-assess and they learn new jobs. So, these will change a bit soon; however, these charts have been what we have used for the past school year.
I had been recommended the book, 401 Ways to Get Your Child to Work at Home years ago. I will tell you that I never did read the entire book. I didn't get past the first few pages. In those first few pages, they have lists of what chores are appropriate for a child broken down by ages. Very helpful! I simply went through the checklists to see what they already knew how to do and then picked one thing each that I thought they should learn. I now do this every summer, helping to build their "life skills" as I call them.
So, on their chore charts, which are simply made by me on my Word program and then posted in our school area for their reference, they are reminded daily of what they need to do. The idea is that since there is a chart posted that I shouldn't have to repeat myself and remind them daily what to do... Of course... that is not yet perfected. Hee hee. But, it does help in that I can just say, "Please go look at your chart... have you done everything?" I put clipart next to each direction so my younger two wouldn't have any problems figuring out what their jobs were.
Each child has the same "Morning Routine," which is:
After that, they each have different jobs. I thought I'd first share my oldest's jobs. He is 9-1/2 years old. Here are his jobs:
|
Monday |
Bathroom: Clean toilet, wipe out tub, clean mirror |
|
Tuesday |
Vacuum hallway & bedrooms |
|
Thursday |
Fun Fling Boogie! Vacuum out van |
|
Friday |
Clean room – under bed, side of bed, inside closet, top of dresser; Windex wipe closet mirror |
Here are my seven-year-old's weekly chores:
|
Monday |
Vacuum front of house;
Empty household trash; |
|
Tuesday |
Dust / clean out computer cabinet; Clean doorknobs and light switches |
|
Thursday |
Fun Fling Boogie! Help clean out van; Empty household trash |
|
Friday |
Clean room – under bed, inside closet, top of dresser |
And here is the chore chart for my daughter, who just turned five:
|
Monday |
Help Mommy dust |
|
Tuesday |
Windex wipe TVs, fireplace, and playroom mirror |
|
Thursday |
Clean baseboards in whatever room mom is in |
|
Friday |
Clean room – under bed, inside closet, top of dresser |
Hope that gives you some ideas. We have a set time in our morning schedule to do our "Home Blessing." A half hour is more than enough time for them to complete these chores (and give me time to check them).
I should also add, in case you are wondering, that they do not have scheduled weekly chores on Wednesdays, because my husband is off on that day. I will usually just assign them something that day that needs to be done.
And like I said above, I will be looking through those checklists in that book over the summer, and these charts will more than likely change a bit. I will share those with you once I have them completed.
Blessings,
~LISA
