Heartfelt Homeschool

Remembering the Blessing of Homeschooling

Posted in HSDevotionals

Well, I think this is the first year I've ever "done" anything for Valentine's day!! Seriously! And Ryan is eleven years old!

A few weeks ago, I was all stressed out about school and "fitting it all in" and God led me to read a few articles from someone in the homeschool world that I respect, etc., and it all just "hit home"... I need those reminders.

I mean... yes, we need to do the academic part of school. But that's not the BLESSING of homeschooling. The blessing of homeschooling comes when I cultivate our relationships with one another. And if I'm all stressed out and irritated and barking orders at them to "hurry up and get their school done" then what kind of relationships am I building? What kind of example am I being? ugh.

I was thinking about all of this during the weekend that I was supposed to go to a mom's conference a couple weeks ago, and instead I stayed home because my daughter had to have stitches. Anyway, I prayed about it and I wrote down what was on my heart about what I felt we SHOULD be doing everyday in our school. What are the bottom line basics?

What ALWAYS happens when I start getting us all on curriculum overload is our Bible time falls by the wayside. And that is SUCH a bad example to my kids. If I do anything, it should be Bible!

So, I sat down and wrote down the following: Bible, read literature aloud to my kids, math, basic language arts. That's it. Everything else is extra. It's fun, and most days we do fit in science, geography/history, and the likes. But, I was reminded that I don't have to teach EVERYTHING this year. So much of school is repetitive. As I looked through the kids' English curriculum, even though they are three different grade levels, they are basically teaching the same thing! Nouns, pronouns, verbs... over and over and over... just maybe have longer sentences, etc. It's so repetitive! I don't have to stress over them not learning it all this year. If they don't learn something this year, they will have the material again next year! And what in the world will they remember if they are crying about all of the busy work that they are doing? They certainly aren't going to remember the academic part of it.

Anyway!!!! I'm on a roll, huh? LOL So, I scratched just about everything that I had planned for the month of February... all of the busy work (seatwork) and decided to do something else at least for the remainder of February. First of all, I am setting all of our alarms for 8am instead of 7am. And everyone has been sleeping in that late. I think that the kids are tired, which lends to crankiness and whining and lack of focus during school time. Between the three of them, they are busy every night of the week with baseball, basketball, softball, CYT. So getting up later has been a good thing.

I'm telling myself to SLOW DOWN.. to enjoy our day... so we have breakfast, do music practice, chores... then we all sit down on the couch together and we do a bible lesson and then I read to them FIRST. And I'm not timing it! If it takes us an hour to do bible and reading, then so be it! Those are the most important things anyway! Then we do math and just a little bit of language arts... it takes about an hour to get the math and LA done. I purchased "The Shelter" copywork book that is made by Jeannie Fulbright, and that is what we are all using for language arts right now. So simple... and yet so full of teaching and learning possibilities. Best of all, they will be memorizing God's precious Word.

And then this week we've been doing the Valentine's study, and we are having so much fun. Learning the history of Valentine's day, learning about what the Bible says about love (eros, phileo, and agape), how we should love one another, making candy to give out to our neighbors and family, and creating our own poems of friendship to attach to the candies we've made. We were in the kitchen today making these candies and we made such a HUGE mess, but we were all laughing and just having the best time. THIS is the blessing of homeschooling, and much too often I lose sight of that.

The Scripture in Mark 8:36 says, "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?" Yes, academics are important. But we must remember that it is also part of this world. When we stand before God, He isn't going to ask us what our SAT scores are or how many A+ papers we got or what a pronoun is. He's going to ask us what we did with His word in our lives... how did we show His love to others...

So, if you're feeling discouraged and overwhelmed in your homeschool journey today, take a few steps back and ask the Lord to show you how to simplify a bit... and remember the blessing of homeschooling.

My Dream School...

Posted in HSDevotionals

Head on over to Blogelle and get a glimpse of one person's dream school.  It has caused me to stop and think.  What do I really want out of our days at home?  Life has been so busy for what seems like for so long.  I tend to do the basics, rarely getting to the "want to's" and "hope to's".

I've got work to do tonight (see what I mean...???).  However, I will come back to this.  Maybe you can think on this, too.

What does your ideal homeschool look like?

Slowly but surely...

Posted in HSDevotionals

Patience patience patience.  God is definitely teaching me patience!

One of my children struggles in school.  He is such a bright child, but he just learns differently than most.  He is definitely my "out of the box" child.  About three weeks ago, we switched back to Math-U-See.  We were both happy that the school they are attending agreed to let us do this.  In just these three short weeks, he is gaining some confidence back that he is smart and that he can do math.  I love it!   Today, I sat with him as he worked through his math pages, and it was so wonderful to see him understanding the concepts!  Slowly, but surely!

There's no hurry!  Every child crawls at a different age.  Every child learns to walk at a different age.  Every child learns to read at a different age.  Every child is different and I am so grateful that as a homeschooling mom, I can help my child advance as he is able to.

What a wonderful blessing.

So, when you are having "one of those days" where it seems your child will never get it... take courage!  He will!  Keep at it.  Take a deep breath and breathe in the patience from God and breathe out the frustration and worry... God is faithful!

I guess I'm crazy!

Posted in HSDevotionals

So, today is Friday - our running around day.  I take my oldest to his piano lessons.  While he is there, my other two children and I walk around the neighborhood.  After his lessons, we go to the optometrist's office to get my oldest son's glasses adjusted.  They were VERY crooked.  Next, we go to my daughter's ballet class.  She was so excited as a friend of hers has signed up for the same class.

After that, we head to Costco to get a healthy (not) lunch - hot dogs.  Then, we head into the store to get some groceries.  As I head to the checkout, I see a woman whose son plays in the same baseball league as my boys.  I actually went to high school with her.  We played softball together in high school.  That was the extent of our friendship.  She is very nice, and it's been fun chatting with her while our boys play ball together.  She has four or five children, I can't remember.

So, anyway... back to being in line at Costco.  She sees me with my three kids, and she asks, "Are your kids on early Spring break?"  I said, "No. We homeschool."

She says, "Oh!  I thought they went to a private school."  I said, "No, we homeschool."

Her response?  "You're CRAZY!"

I didn't have much to say to that, so I just kinda laughed at her amusing remark.  She then repeats herself, "You're CRAZY!  I live for school!!!"

And, then we parted ways as the person checking me out was ready for me to pay.  I stood there in line with my kids, my seven-year-old hugging on me and my soon-to-be five-year-old helping put the items on the conveyor... and I thanked God for the blessing of homeschool.

It's hard to not take offense sometimes at how people see you ~ people who, from the comments they make, don't enjoy their children.  Oh, don't get me wrong... there are days that I'm worn out from the constant training and noise that goes along with being home with my kids all day.  I have my days where I am longing for a break - to do whatever *I* want to do... but I know this is what God has called me to do at this time in my life.  I'm thankful that I've come to a point of embracing that calling.  Thank, You, Lord!!

I do not know what the future holds for us as we continue on this journey.  I know that I will run into more people down the road who inquire about homeschooling and disagree with the choice we've made.  That's okay... they can call me crazy... I can live with that.

How about you?  Have you embraced the calling of homeschooling?  If not, what is holding you back?  Remember that we only need to focus on doing what God has called us each to do ~ even if the world sees what we do as crazy.

Blessings,

What's in a name?

Posted in HSDevotionals

For the first few years of our homeschool journey, I desired to have a name for our school.  I had heard of other homeschoolers who had done this; however, I am just not the kind of person who can easily think up creative things.  So, I waited on the Lord.

One day, I was praying over our homeschool and crying out to the Lord about certain frustrations.  He directed me to Proverbs 4:23 which says, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life."  And suddenly, the words "Heartfelt Homeschool" popped into my mind.  I just knew it was from the Lord!  I was so excited to finally have a "name" for what we were doing.

The word heart is defined in the bible figuratively as the seat of emotions, thoughts, and intentions.  It is the central or most vital part of something.

God wants us to treasure His words in our hearts.  He wants us to hide His word in our heart so that we may not sin against Him.  He desires that we seek Him with our whole heart.

In 1 Samuel 16:7 we are told that God does not look at the outward appearance as man does, but rather at the heart.  If God so focuses on the heart of man, then that tells me that I need to make that my focus as well.

Soon after God gave me the name "Heartfelt Homeschool," our youth pastor was preaching one Sunday morning and, and he was teaching through Colossians 3:12-17.  In verse 12, Scripture tells us to "put on tender mercies."  He went on to elaborate that the word for "tender mercies" was "heartfelt compassion."  He further stated that the word heartfelt meant "felt deep within my innermost being."

WOW!  I was so excited!  God was teaching me through this name He had given me.   Now, I had more of a focus... a purpose... for our homeschool:

God's desire for our homeschool was that my focus would be on the heart of my children, in teaching their heart, and in keeping my heart cleansed before Him.  Our homeschool was certainly to be more than just academics; it was to be something that I felt deep within my innermost being.  This was to be a passion!  And even further still, God reminded me that I needed to put on tender mercies when teaching my children... to not become easily irritated or frustrated when they didn't understand something... or when I had to repeat myself for the umpteeth time... I was to put on tender mercies, just as Christ had shown mercy towards me.

Heartfelt Homeschool is a reminder to me of what God has called me to do... keep the focus on our hearts... are we pleasing to the Lord in what we do?

How about you?  Is there meaning behind your school name?  If you do not desire or feel the need to have a school name, have you stopped and reflected on what the purpose, goal, and focus of your homeschool is?

I'd love to hear your story or your thoughts on this subject.  Blog about it and leave me a comment so you, too, can be an encouragement to others sharing how God has worked in your homeschool!

Blessings,

Patience

Posted in HSDevotionals

I heard once that homeschooling is God's way of training two generations at once.  So true!  I know that He uses our homeschooling as a way to teach me many things... and patience being one of them.

My oldest son is somewhat of a "late bloomer."  He does things in his own timing and way.  I suppose it is more of God's timing, but you know what I mean, right?  He has always been more on the cautious side, a little fearful of new situations, etc.  However, once he gets it... he gets it!

Take math, for example.  There were many months where I fretted over his seemingly inability to memorize simple addition facts.  I tried everything I could think of to help him.  I read lots of homeschooling sites looking for answers.  I prayed.  I cried.  I got frustrated.  I gave up.  I started over.

And then one day...  he just "got it."  It suddenly clicked with him and he has been moving ahead steadily in math ever since!  Who knew?  Not me!

But God knew!  He knew that my son would understand it... but it was in His timing and not my own.

Today, we all went to the park as a family to ride bikes.  I rode along side this same son with tears in my eyes as I watched him ride his bike.  You see, he is nine.... and he just started riding a bike without training wheels a few days ago.  Now, he doesn't want to stop riding his bike!

God is forever teaching me that when I have a worry... when I wonder how things will work out... that I need to be patient for His timing.  As Psalms 37:7 says, I need to "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him..."

So what about you?  Has God used homeschooling to teach you patience?  Be sure to leave a comment if you share on your blog!

Blessings,

If You Were a REAL Teacher

Posted in HSDevotionals

I'm sure you read that title and you are questioning why you even popped over here on my blog in the first place, right?

However, the Lord has been tugging at my heart today with this question.  You know... if you were a teacher in a regular school?  One of my good friends is a 3rd grade teacher at a private Christian school.  When we talk, she often talks about prepping for lesson plans, etc.  She puts a lot of herself into teaching.  Granted, not all teachers in regular schools are as caring and committed as she is, but that's not the point.

So, what IS the point, you ask?

Well, very often, I get up for the day and I wing it through our school time.  We get to science and I suddenly realize that I need copies of certain notebook pages.  We get in the middle of history and I realize it would have been nice if I had found a blackline map of the area we are studying.  And on and on.... anyone else do this?

So, the Lord has been tugging at my heart today... "Lisa, what if you taught other children in a classroom school setting?  Would you be prepared for THEM?"  Well, of course I would, right?!  Wouldn't you?  I mean, after all, you are EXPECTED to by the parents who are entrusting you with their children.  You are getting PAID by the school who expects you to have a lesson plan completed.

So, why don't I do this in my own homeSCHOOL?  Yes, I know... I hear those of you saying that we don't want to bring the school classroom into the home.  We don't always sit at desks... the kids don't necessarily sit and listen to me lecture at them while I am standing up near a blackboard.  I'm not talking about that.  I'm talking about BEING PREPARED... and giving my children AS MUCH (if not more) than I would give to stranger's children if I were an employed classroom teacher!

Maybe you don't have this issue in your home.  Maybe you are always prepared and ready to go each day when you wake up.  Lately, ... well, for a long time... I usually am not.  I just wing it.

What's wrong with this?

It creates STRESS.  I suddenly realize I need something I don't have.  Sometimes I can come up with it quickly.  Sometimes I have to put today's lesson off for tomorrow because I realized that I don't have what I need.

It also creates distraction.  If I have to suddenly stop what we are doing and come into this little "office" of mine to make a photocopy of something, for some reason my children see this as an opportunity to play!  Think of that!  ha!  They start playing around while I'm in here making copies and then I have to round them up when I've got everything together.  Of course, then they don't want to stop playing and I'm frustrated with them for playing.  Well, if I had just had what I needed ready when I needed it, I could have avoided that whole scenario!

It's not a good example.  What am I showing my children?  I'm showing that it's okay to procrastinate... that they don't necessarily need to be prepared for work.

I could give many "reasons" why I'm not prepared; however, in all honesty, they would merely be excuses.  God has given me ample time, means, and ability to prepare for our lessons.  It's not a great deal of work.  It really just comes down to ... uh.... laziness.  Selfishness on my part.  At the end of the day, I don't feel like doing more for school.  I want to be done.

In reality, if I would just spend about 15 minutes at the end of our school time looking over the next day's lesson and then preparing what is needed, I would spare myself much stress the next day.

As I've thought about this today, I do see that one of the obstacles that keeps me from getting things prepared is lack of having a set place to put those items.  I could just make one more pile of paper on my desk, right?  However, I don't really want to do that.  So, this weekend I will prayerfully figure out away to organize our school stuff and my teacher stuff so that preparing for a lesson will be easily accomplished.

How about you?  If you were teaching in a regular classroom setting teaching other people's children, would you be more prepared?

If you don't have this struggle, God bless you!  Leave me a comment and give me some helpful suggestions I can use in my home!  I'm willing and happy to learn from others!

If, however, what I've written has tugged a little at your heart, don't despair!  Know that our God who has called us to this task of schooling our children will equip us for the task!  We just need to be faithful to seek His face and His wisdom on how to do that!  He will not call us to do something that He has not already made a way for it to be accomplished.  How can you be more prepared in your teaching?  What obstacles do you need to overcome or change in order for your school day to go more smoothly?

"He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much..."

Luke 16:10a
