I went to church tonight with my mom. My sweet daughter has had a fever since yesterday and so it looks like we won't be able to go to church tomorrow as a family, so I went to the Saturday night service at my mom's church tonight.
The pastor's sermon was basically that we are to pursue blessedness rather than happiness.
Happiness is fleeting and based on circumstance, whereas blessedness is based on God's favor and endures forever. We can be happy and not blessed; likewise, we can be blessed and temporarily unhappy.
Happiness asks the question, "What do I need to do to be happy?" It is a "me first" attitude; it breeds selfishness.
Blessedness asks the question, "What choice should I make to please God?" It is a "God first" attitude and breeds godliness.
It was interesting to me to think about how so often when you ask parents what they want for their children, so many people answer, "I want them to be happy." However, that really isn't biblical, is it?
The pastor was throwing out so many verses, I couldn't keep up. I wrote the many Scripture references down and plan to study them in my quiet time over the next few weeks. As I gain more insight on this topic, I will share here as I'm able.
I'd appreciate your prayers for my little girl as she has had a fever for two days now. I sure hope she is better tomorrow.
Blessings to you,
