Always Blessed

Apr. 12, 2007 - Team Sports VS. Family Time

Hello All !!

We`ve had quite a busy few weeks....... Little Leauge has just begun here as well as Spring Soccer. We have always had our children involved in community sporting leauges if they expressed an interest, but for some reason, this season it seems particularly overwhelming.

I`ve always felt that it was a real benefit to them to interact with others their age while becoming more experienced at a specific sport.

Somehow this year, we are at practices all 5 weekday evenings with games on the weekends. Most practices last for 2 hours and we find ourselves back home around 7:30pm preparing for a late dinner.

Is this common ?? I`m uncertain as to the popularity of extra-curricular activities / sports within the homeschooling communities across the country.

While the boys do enjoy their sports, it seems like, there`s little time for homework (if needed) or family time.We may have to rethink our scheduling for future peak sport seasons.

I'm reluctant to get involved in sports because of those reasons. We only have 2 kids right now but are thinking about more. It will be challenging when they all want to be involved in different things!

So, I know you were considering sonlight - I posted some info on their new language arts programs recently. I haven't had much time lately to keep up with other blogs, so today I'm reading alot to catch up! I hope things are going well for you.

We do not participate in any sporting activities other than family activities for those reasons. TOO much time away and apart. Sports are fun and provide exercise as well as some other benefits, but to me the cons outweigh the pros here. What ever became of the neighborhood boys playing in the local field while the dads visit about the new lawn mower that Mr. Jones was using the other day?

We find that AWANA meets all the extracurricular we need right now. We have a great club that does pine car derby, games, quizzing, summer camp as well as some other local club activities like workshops and cookouts.

i don't do little league because it's too expensive, but locally we have a Wild Cat league that is about $20 (the cost of the hat and t-shirt) for the whole summer, and the practices are in the morning after public school lets out for the year, with a great end of year event -- no child is turned away for lack of ability/finance, I don't know if Wild Cat is a national organization or just local but it's great

when looking for sports we only participate if both children (7 and 8) can play at the same time, i would go nuts trying to drive them to different things every night or one child one night the other the next, they can only have one at a time (be it sports, music, etc...), and they see it thru till the end of the season/class, unless I see that there is a good reason to quit (and it better be good -- mom i'm not good enough is not a good reason)

other then that i have John Rosemond's attitude on extra-curricular activities, that they do take away from family, home, personal time -- but they can be controlled

have you tried talking to the organizers to see if practices can over lap? if they get enough requests they may change it.

my 2 cents for what it's worth :)

I tend to feel guilty about not having my kids in organized sports, but for our family it is just not possible. They cost a lot of money and my husband works on the weekends. I would be the one running about and that exhausts me just thinking about it. I don't want to sound "old", but I did not like being in sports as a kid and so I didn't feel like I needed to have my kids do them either, unless they asked. So far no one has asked. We do Karate as a family once a week though. And it is only $15 for all 4 of them. I think the bottom line is that there is a balance that needs to be in place. If you are exhausted, then maybe the balance is out of whack.
