The Writings of Amanda Read

Jan. 15, 2006

Here I am again...

I'm back - for another quick note, at least.

First of all, I'm turning 16 on the 23rd of this month, and I'm the eldest of 7 (soon to be 8) children.  I'm Rachel's (Ballerina4HIM) sister.  My other siblings are:

Joseph (11), Abigail (8), Mary (6), David (3) and Elizabeth (1).

I have been homeschooled all my life, and a Christian for as long as I can remember.  My dad retired from the Military recently, so we now live on 22 acres in north Alabama.  I was born in El Paso, Texas and have lived in:

Monterey, California

Ithaca, New York

Garmisch, Germany

Tashkent, Uzbekistan

West Point, New York

Redstone Arsenal, Alabama

Marion, Alabama (further south).

I suppose that our family has lived the sort of "unschooling" lifestyle - that is, getting some "official" school work in whatever time of day - or day of week - that we happen to grab our pencils.  Just trotting along, I suppose...

What I have loved the most about homeschooling is the fact that I can study anything, any time, anywhere - for the most part, anyway.  We have a huge home library, and now that we own a house (instead of living on army post or rented housing), my mom insisted that we have built in book cases in our basement school room (hurray!).  You should have seen how quickly we filled them up.  As our name implies, we read a lot.

I have been studying World Views of the Western World (from Cornerstone Curriculum) for the past two years (beginning with Starting Points - I'm now completing Year 1).  I think that it is an awesome classical curriculum for studying history and literature from a Biblical world view perspective (a real eye opener).

I've also been using the Exploring Creation series (General Science, Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry...) from Apologia Educational Ministries.  Science has been my top favorite subject for years, and this has been my best curriculum.

Well...I'll get to Video Text Algebra later (math hasn't been my best subject, but this course helps!).  Oh, and not to mention my love of art and music and equestrianism and...oh, I'll be on here forever if I don't stop now.

So long then!

GOD BLESS,
