4 April 2008 - Week ending April 4

We did a lot, but I don't think we go much done.

GTS and GKS worked on a B page.  Color a B and b words and then glued B's on the bottom.  Art was canceled do we get to go next week.  Music was cancelled also.  Wednesday was are biggest day.  A friend got her aupair from Kenya.  In the morning, we took her around the city.  Then we snacked and rest at home for about an hour and a half.  Then to Turnien(gym).  Then a nice long nap for the kids.  Then off to the movies.  We got home before 9:30 thankfully.  GTH didn't have any tests so it was not to bad.  We went to see "Horton hears a Who" in English of course.
Education Update:  They both know the basic colors.  Slow they are figuring out numbers and letter.  The funny thing is that GTS knows what a B is, but GKS struggles with giving the name of the letter.   But on the flip side GKS was potty train exactly when she turned 2.  GTS , at 3 1/2, can not get the idea of using the pot unless he is naked from the waist down. Children are so interesting.

Flocke is Germany's newest polar bear.  Last year Berlin got a new polar bear, Knut.  It was polar bear mania.  Now Nürnberg's new baby has moved out of the nursery and out into public view.  The zoo does not have enough parking places to keep up.

As we enter Feburary, we begin African-American History month.  Geing black this is the time I  look for these these types of books videos and stuff.

Follow the Drinking Gourd is a song and book.  It is suppose to be a folk song sung by escaping slaves, but it seems it is not.  The drinking gourd is the big dipper.  I will be read this to the kids for the next week.

29 January 2008 - Grades are not to bad.

We think.  Tomorrow we are to see his main teacher.  I am not crazy about the woman, but we will see what see has to say.  I will need to make an appointment with his English teacher.  GKS has been online with Toggolino and working on handwriting.  Her writing is getting better, but she is still having a problem identifing letters and numbers.  We need to work on shapes and colors this week.  She seems to have forgotten what a square is.  It is interesting to see her understand the difference between English and German.

Kids got to play outside to day after, GKS played on Nick Jr.  GKS worked in workbook on the letter G.  Art class went well.  Kids were pretty good in the subway, but that might be because there were two other kids not wanted to do what their mother wanted.   We read one book in English and one in German.  Pretty good day.

27 January 2008 - Faschings week

Fasching is the time leading up to the Lent perion.  We have Rosenmontag(Monday), Fastnacht,(Tuesday) and then Achermittwoch(Wenesday).  Party have been going on for the Karnival season starting Nov. 11, pausing for the Christmas holidays, and have now resumed and will be going on building steam.  One of things is to dress up in costumes.  So sales on cowboy, pirate, princess, clown and other costumes and make-up are on sale.(On a side note, I picked up a princess dress for this years princess day.)   There adult parties and kid party.(oh, no I total forgot that I might need one for all the different clubs we are in.) The season ends with parades where the people on the floats throw candy at the watchers.  It seems to me a way to keep you stocked in candy. You have just depleted you Christmas stock.  You need something to hold you over till Easter. Some events are just fun, some have alot of old masks and folk lore, some are more political.  One thing is schools are out for the week of Feburary 4-8.  Yes, they just got back in school but now they get another week out.  We will be in Heidelberg for the week.  So the post after this will deal with Heidelberg things.

25 January 2008 - Culture in Nuernberg

Nuernberg has lots of things to do and a great transit system to get to different places.  Nuernberg has more than a few place call "Kuturläden".  These are places where they have plays for adults and children.  Music,  workshops and just good fun.  One of the houses , Villa Leon,  this week is doing a Latin America Week.  They are listing music, discussions, a fiesta, and more.  Sunday will be a Mexican puppet show, pinatas, crafts, and food.  It is free enter from 1 to 5pm.  I am hoping to make this one.  So I will have to have the house really clean.

Albrecht-Dürer-Haus is a reall cool museem.  Dürer was a printer, engraver and mathematician.  What they have done is taken his house/workshop and made a museem to him and the time period he lived in.  You can add an audio guide that had a repeative track for each room.  They do tours for kids, ages 5-14, every first and third Sunday and every first Thursday of the month.  They have an English tour every Saturday at 2pm.

23 January 2008 - Vote to Support German Homeschoolers

From various UK home educating lists:

At a German website where people can put questions to Angela Merkel, someone has asked why homeschooling is not possible in Germany. Only those questions with the highest number of points will be answered. You can support this questioner by adding to the number of points.

By way of a rough translation of the full question:

The questioner is asking the authorities to change the legal situation so that homeschooling is permitted in Germany. She says that the legal judgement and behaviour of the authorities will result in more families leaving Germany and that that is not in the interests of the country. She asks if homeschooling is really a security risk for the country or a risk for children, and says that there is nowhere else in the EU where homeschoolers are persecuted as they are there.

She says that her own daughter is unable to attend school but that she would certainly send her to school if she did not know that the effects of doing so would be negative, but that she would like the legal option of keeping her daughter at home until she is able to handle school. She says there have been positive developments in education in the last 20 years but that it would be unfortunate if those children who need it were unable to refuel at home until they were able to handle the large class groups. She asks to be informed by the co-workers (of the person she's writing to) what is necessary for legalisation of homeschooling to occur.

If you would like to support the fight for legalisation of home education in Germany, go to the website and click on "Beiträge Abstimmen". This will take you to another page. Somewhere on the next page, you will find the following among the questions there:

  • Von Susanne Volkmann
  • Über Bildung
  • Am 20. Januar

"Warum ist Heimunterricht nicht möglich? Sehr geehrte Frau Bundeskanzlerin, ich bitte Sie von Herzen, die gesetzlichen Bedingungen dafür zu schaffen, dass Homeschooling in Deutschland legalisiert wird. mehr..."

Click on "mehr" and on the next page (where the whole of the question appears) click on the right hand side of the coloured line, where the + sign is.

That's all folks! Good deed done.

As of this posting you can still find it on the first page of questions.  It has 307 votes and is in 6th place of who has the most votes.

22 January 2008 - January update

Yesterday went well.  I played a few games with GKS in the morning and we read two books in english.  GTH read them a book in German.

The games:  Mcdonald have mini games in their Happy Meals.  We now have small versions of Connect 4 and Who is it?.   It also comes with a 5€ coupon for certain MB games.  it is 5 off 20 at Amazon.de or you can take it to Toys'r'us.  The code for Amazon is A7WHJ245.  There looks to be just one code so I guess anyone can use it.

The other game we played what a form of Shoots and Ladders, but princess style.  Weetablix has whole grain cereals and one is called Stars.  On the back of the box is a small game board (up to 25). All you have to do is add a die and you are ready to play.  They also have a Weetos choco which comes with a crayola washable marker.  The Looters(pirate) cereal does not taste as well as the others.

GTH is doing a little better in school.  he got a 1 on a Math quiz and a 2 on an English Test.  I am not expecting much on the German test.

5 January 2008 - Das Alte Δgypten mit allen Sinnen

Wenesday, we spent the day at Speyer's history museum for children.  We spent about 2 hours in their interactive exhibit for Epypt.  It was great fun.  Normal these kind of museums are for science, but find one with an historical twist is great.

GTH building a pyramid.

Papa trying to play a game with GKS.  GTS is just trying to get in the way.

Back of the ship.

Sailing down the nile.
