Art History Sensibilities

Today I received the Art History book I waited four years to get. I guess I’ll be sending it back. The pictures are 85% unclothed. I realize this is “classical” art. However, I do not think my children need a sensual picture of a maiden being seduced by Zeus at this time, etc., etc.

Are there any art history books from a Biblical worldview? One that calls God, and not man, the original artist? One sensitive to children’s sensibilities?

Does anyone have any recommendations? I guess I’m back in the market…

Well, after I read your post I went and got out the Art book my 7th grader is using this year and flipped through it looking for nudes! LOL There are 12 total (give or take a few.) in a book of 196 pages. Almost all of them are in the Renaissance or Baroque and Rococo sections which are contained in about 40 pages of the book. He has been exposed (Pardon the pun!) to art all his life. I hadn't really even thought about the nudes until I read your post. This is the 1st year he has read Art on his own, maybe I should have thought about it? Anyway, I think I will try to remember to read those 2 chapters with him. I asked him how he was liking the book tonight and he said "It's great!" Anyway, the book is The Usborne Book of Art. There is also another Usborne Art book for younger kids. I had it, but I sold it. (I sell Usborne.) I have been meaning to order one for my daughter. I don't know if it had nudes or not? I think I am oblivious to it because we have been to so many museums and I just love art so much. Hope I am not warping my kids!

Another book that comes to mind is the ABC of Art book by Baby Einstein. It is not for babies! LOL Great for elementary school. My kids love it. We have a lot of art books. I will try to look through them and see which ones I could recommend based on nudes content! LOL

Thanks for bringing this to my mind. Something to think about...

Enjoy!

Thanks for the nice comment on my blog! I was getting concerned that you would be upset with me because I have posted more in the comments on your blog on this topic than you did in the original post! LOL BTW, what is the title of the book you got with all the nudes? I want to avoid 85% nudes! Thanks! Can you tell I am passionate about art?

I'm with Jamin--Baby Einstein's ABCs of Art is a wonderful book. I also like Looking At Pictures.

Great idea for a post! I love art appreciation, so the info from Jamin was very helpful. :-)

Oct. 2, 2006 - Here are two great books

Posted by LisaLW
I found these at a "My Father's World" curriculum booth and we just love them. It's a series, "Come Look With Me." I have "Exploring Landscape Art with Children" and "Enjoying Art with Children." Each featured painting comes with some questions and a paragraph of information about the artist and his/her time in history. There are several other books in the series as well. You can probably go to www.mfwbooks.com and buy them there. I love art history!

You might also check out www.mylilpicasso.com They send out bi-monthly art kits that feature a different artist and art technique each time. With their VanGogh kit we got a set of watercolors, palettes, watercolor paper and lots of other related activities.

I love Vermont because of her hills and valleys, the scenery and invigorating climate. But most of all because of her indomitable people. They are a race of pioneers who almost beggared themselves for others.

If the spirit of liberty should vanish from the rest of the Union, and our institutions should languish, it all could be restored by the generous store held by the people in this brave little State of Vermont.
