For History: Christian History - what I love about this is it is a straight history magazine. No opinions. Just straight forward reporting of what happened & why. It is published by Christianity Today Magazine.
For science: there is Creation (www.creationontheweb.com) and Answers in Genesis puts out a great science Magazine (just go to www.answersingenesis.org) Both of these are comparable (actually better) than National Geographic)

Many companies will put out free magazines to promote their products. Alot of recipe ones come from the food companies. Try the websites of his favorite products and see if they offer free ones.
For animals, do a search for organizations devoted to that animal. They generally have info about magazines devoted to that animal.
For politics: No matter who you vote for, nothing brings up discussion like the Limbaugh Letter from RushLimbaugh.com.
